Para la realización de un posicionamiento concreto en relación al pensamiento filosófico judío, Naḥmanides conjugó los enfoques médico y filosófico en gran medida, a lo que sumó la perspectiva teológica sobre el cuerpo de hombres y mujeres, estableciendo la diferencia entre ellos a partir de la oposición fundamental de su fisiología. Para ello prestó especial atención a la diferencia sexual y la categorización social de los hombres y las mujeres sobre la explicación de la biología. Asimismo, los objetivos secundarios estudiados a lo largo de esta investigación, corresponden al análisis de la articulación teórica del pensamiento de Naḥmanides, cuestión que implica, en este sentido, la observación de su postura, no solo en cuanto a la tradición judía sino también al examen de su relación con otras corrientes de pensamiento contemporáneas, ya sea dentro del ámbito del judaísmo o fuera de el mismo. A lo largo de esta tesis se evalúa el alcance y la influencia de la concepción aristotélica, en especial, en lo que tocante a la generación y el funcionamiento del cuerpo de las mujeres. Esta discusión debe observarse, además, a la luz de la determinación de Naḥmanides contraria al estudio de la ciencia y la filosofía que el autor consideraba “extranjeras”. En último lugar, este trabajo busca y verifica la repercusión de la obra de Naḥmanides en las vidas de las mujeres, concretamente, a partir de lo expresado sobre esta cuestión en los textos contemporáneos y subsiguientes, escritos por hombres para hombres. Así pues, se pretende analizar la diversidad de significados atribuidos a la menstruación en la Edad Media y las causas formales de su papel preponderante en este contexto. Como último objetivo, se pretende dar a conocer la obra de Naḥmanides a un público más amplio, haciéndola accesible tanto a investigadores como a estudiosos de múltiples ámbitos y disciplinas científicas, además de aumentar su difusión en el marco de los Estudios Hebreos.

The book challenges conventional scholarly opinion regarding Christian knowledge of contemporary Jewish thought and questions the assumption that Christians did not know or use Kabbalah before the Renaissance. Further, it suggests that Lull was well aware of ongoing intellectual and religious controversies within the Jewish community, as well as being the first Christian to acknowledge and appreciate Kabbalah as a tool for conversion. The Jewish Studies Program (JSP) is an interdisciplinary academic group with twenty-one faculty members from eight departments that coordinates all courses relating to Jewish Studies in the university, as well as undergraduate majors and minors and graduate programs in different departments. JSP also sponsors many events, including two endowed lectureships and the Kutchin Faculty Seminars. The Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies (Katz Center) is a post-doctoral research institute that annually brings eighteen to twenty-five distinguished scholars to Penn as fellows to pursue scholarly research on selected themes. These fellows are selected from the finest and most prominent Judaic scholars in the world. Every year several Katz Center fellows teach courses at Penn, and both graduate students and University faculty participate in the Katz Center’s weekly seminars.
