Developing and Expanding Community Enterprises Creating Pathways to Prosperity for Underserved Communities in Africa

The U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF) is an independent U.S. government agency established by Congress to invest in African grassroots organizations, entrepreneurs and small- and medium-sized enterprises. USADF’s investments promote local economic development by increasing incomes, revenues and jobs. Utilizing a community-led development approach, USADF provides seed capital and local project management assistance to African-owned and led enterprises addressing some of Africa’s biggest challenges around food insecurity, insufficient energy access, and unemployment, particularly among women and youth. Over the last five years, throughout Africa, with an emphasis on the Horn, Sahel and Great Lakes regions, USADF has invested more than $115 million dollars directly into over 1000 African-owned and operated entities and impacted over four million lives.

138 384K INVESTING IN COMMUNITIES Enterprises People Impacted Challenge: Pemba Dairy Cooperative Society Limited lacked the capacity and skills needed to implement an artificial insemination (AI) program aimed at improving local animal breeds, milk yields, and production. $14.8 Action: USADF invested US$93,552 for the Cooperative to implement a robust and sustainable AI Million program. Results: With USADF’s investment, the Cooperative achieved a 76% percent success rate, trained *FY 2010 to FY 2019 three cooperative members to become AI Technicians, increased milk yields, and improved the quality of milk produced. GROWING ENTERPRISES Challenge: Sinda village in the Eastern Province of Zambia lacked stable electricity sources, leaving many rural families to us kerosene lamps, candles, car batteries, wood fuel, etc. Action: USADF awarded US$150,000 to Muhanya Solar Project for it to provide reliable electricity to rural communities via solar energy. Results: With USADF’s investment, Muhanya developed Zambia’s first privately owned and operated solar mini-grid in Sinda village. The mini-grid has a generation capacity of 30 kilowatts and has so far Mansa District connected 120 households. This has improved the standard of living of community members and has led to income-generating activities being initiated, such as grocery stores and salons. School children in Sinda now have longer study times since they can study at night.

Sinda Village Lusaka INCREASING INCOMES Challenge: Mansa District Women Development Association (MADWA) faced difficulties in Pemba marketing oil seeds due to a lack of buyers in , thus rendering farmers heavily reliant on maize as a cash crop. Action: USADF awarded MADWA US$215,654 to scale up its cooking oil production and marketing operations and increase sales and profitability. Results: With USADF’s support, MADWA increased its purchasing power of sunflower from 36 tons in 2017 to 59 tons in 2019. The sale of cooking oil rose from US$6,184 in 2017 to US$8,662 in 2019. MADWA has diversified its crop production to include sunflower seeds. BUILDING CAPACITY Challenge: Monze District Women Development Association (MWDA) faced difficulties in marketing oil seeds due to uncompetitive prices offered by traders and lack of processing facilities and alternative buyers. Action: USADF invested $92,965 in MWDAs to strengthen its cooking oil production and capabilities. Results: With USADF’s investment, MWDA members and surrounding communities now produce USADF.gov more than 300 metric tons of oil seeds. MWDA processes an average of 3,936 sunflower seed bags and 21,060 liters of cooking oil per year valued at an average of US$31,000, from a baseline of zero. USADF Zambia Investments in 2019
