NO MASKING FALLS AS PREMIER SALE OPENS It has taken a few months for the sales circuit to catch up, but Goffs UK’s Premier Yearling Sale commenced yesterday in Doncaster in more or less conventional style. It is being staged a week later than initially planned, its sister Silver Sale has been merged into the Autumn Horses in Training and Yearling Sale in late October, and former Donny chief Harry Beeby is absent for the first time in 56 years, but the sight of buyers and vendors seeking or selling yearlings in late summer was a welcome sign that in this Coronavirus-damaged year some Coulonces Sales sold the top lot on day one of the Goffs UK sense of logistical normality is within grasp. Admittedly the Premier Yearling Sale yesterday, a colt by buyers and vendors are semi-anonymous in their face masks – an (Lot 165), who was bought by Richard Ryan for £170,000. © Goffs UK obligation which is being enforced around the sales complex – but there was no mistaking the presence of some racy-looking yearlings. Given the pandemic and resultant restrictions on travelling across foreign borders, trade was most unlikely to power ahead of BEBF Stallion Focus – Adaay p12 last year’s figures and it was not surprising to witness falls in all Leading Sires’ Table p13 the key indicators, although today’s second and final session is

He returned to vendor Dermot Cantillon when failing to breach 40,000gns last year, but it was a different tale yesterday. Cantillon said: “I’m delighted – it’s a difficult time and it’s great to get a boost like that, but he is a beautiful horse and walked out so well. He was a very nice foal, too, but he’s done very well from then to now and Acclamation is having a good season. to the family. It’s such a consistent family and Futoon is a big, good- looking mare. “We have 19 to sell and it’s an interesting year to have my biggest group of yearlings, but it’s the same for everyone and all we can do is try our best to offer nice horses. The good horses will sell and the average ones will struggle. It’s the same in any industry at the moment and, while the market won’t be as strong as in recent years, we are very lucky to have places to sell. I’ll be represented at all the yearling sales with a mixture of pinhooks and homebreds.” USEM BEARS A WESTMEATH WINNER County Westmeath-based Ken Carroll and Tom Wallace parted with 4,000gns when purchasing the Bahamian Bounty mare Usem at ’ December Sale in 2018. That decision reaped a handsome profit yesterday when the Kodi Bear colt (Lot 30) she carried was sold for £110,000 to racehorse owner Phil Cunningham, who was bidding online. His purchase is a half-brother to a pair of winners by Sayif, including the Listed-placed Ikigai. Carroll was “happy” but not surprised by the sum he and Wallace had gained, and said: “She’s a good mare, as you can see from what she’s done with two Sayifs. She has a Galileo Gold filly who’s a queen and she’s in foal to , so you could say we are upgrading her.” Carroll, who gained experience in this trade while working for Eddie O’Leary’s Lynn Lodge Stud, trades as Lewinstown Farm, while Wallace, who heads Lemongrove Stud, worked in the USA and at Tally-Ho Stud before creating their own businesses. Carroll said: “We keep 12 to 15 mares and sell when we can, as foals or yearlings, and we’ll run one, too”. Usem’s colt was their sole offering in this catalogue, but they have other horses to sell at forthcoming yearling sales and they were optimistic about their chances. Carroll said: “The breeze-ups stood up very well and while trade will be select the good ones will sell okay. If you think otherwise you shouldn’t be in this business.”

DOYLE RETURNS TO FAMILIAR GROUND When a bloodstock agent has purchased “two champions” from a consignor they are naturally keen to see their next yearlings. So it was that Ross Doyle and Richard Hannon checked out a son of Acclamation (Lot 49) offered by Jimmy Murphy’s Redpender Stud, liked what they saw and bought him in the ring yesterday following a bid of £105,000. That meant a small paper profit for Murphy who bought the colt, a first foal of the High

A colt (Lot 92), also sired by Rathbarry Stud’s ace sire Acclamation, he was foaled by Balayage (Invincible Spirit), another daughter of Shamwari Lodge. Newmarket trainer Roger Varian took a shine to this one and his £95,000 bid proved successful. Doyle and Hannon are hard to beat when pursuing a Premier Sale yearling and they were quickly back in the driving seat when a filly by Kodiac (Lot 56) walked into the ring from Paddy Burns’s Loughtown Stud. A daughter of the winner and Listed-placed mare Zvarkhova, and from the family of champion miler and sire Mark Of Esteem, this February yearling joined Hannon’s string following Doyle’s bid of £100,000. Adaay leading the way

t is an acknowledged fact that the way in which our industry judges young sires has shifted significantly over the last two Idecades. Where once Classic stamina was important, speed and precocity has become increasingly prized, which means the spotlight is shone every more intently on the results a stallion achieves in his earliest years at stud. Ed Harper and his team at Whitsbury Manor Stud in Hampshire will therefore be delighted with the flying start that the dual Gr.2 winner Adaay (Kodiac) has made to his stud career. In this highly- unusual year, with a truncated Flat season, the young stallion was the leading first season in Britain by number of individual winners in Europe to the end of August, with earnings of over £140,000, and was lying joint-second in the list of leading first crop sires in Europe by number of winners, sharing the second spot with Haras de Colleville’s Goken in behind Tally-Ho Stud’s Mehmas. Adaay has also been siring quality as well as quantity, with three black-type performers already representing him, ahead of Adaay has made a flying start to his stallion career at the cavalcade of juvenile Stakes racing between now and the end Whitsbury Manor Stud. of the season. Those Stakes performers are headed by the Italian-trained Doctor Strange, who became his sire’s first winner when striking in Milan at the end of May, just days into the new season in Italy. Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and has struck twice for his sire Having also taken a conditions event at Rome the following this season, winning on debut at Windsor in June and following month, he returned to Milan to finish third in the Gr.3 Premio up the next month in the famed EBF Woodcote Stakes at Epsom Primi Passi over 1200m in early July. That result was followed for on Derby day.
