Oktober 2012, 22.00 - 24.00 Uhr (Zweitsendung) Der Tenorsaxophonist Warne Marsh gehört zu den markantesten Schülern aus dem Kreis um Lennie Tristano. Der zurückhaltende, fast scheue Musiker stellte die Improvisation - auch im Kollektiv - stets über das auftrumpfende Solospiel. 1949 wirkte er am ersten völlig frei improvisierten Stück der Jazzgeschichte mit. Die freien Improvisationen entstanden im Trio mit Tristano und Lee Konitz. Mit dem Altosax-Kollegen aus der Tristano-Schule hat Marsh später auch oft im Duo gespielt. Konitz nannte Warne Marsh einmal den «am wenigsten anerkannten Musiker». Today, Tristano is known primarily for his contribution to jazz and jazz piano in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He is also recognized for his pedagogical success as one of jazz’s first formal teachers. Beyond that, however, Tristano remains a peripheral figure in much of jazz’s history. In this thesis, I argue that Tristano’s contributions are often overlooked because he approached jazz creation in a way that ignored unspoken commercially-oriented social expectations within the community. I also identify anticommercialism as the underlying theme that influenced the majority of his decisions ultimately contributing to his canonic marginalization. Each chapter looks at a prominent aspect of his career in an attempt to understand how anticommercialism affected his musical output. I begin by looking at Tristano’s early 1950s loft sessions and show how changes he made to standard jam session protocol during that time reflect the pursuit of artistic purity—an objective that forms the basis of his ideology.

    Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book.
