The Career Development Center is pleased to present Career Destinations – Saint Joseph’s University Class of 2012 , our annual report of the post- graduate activities of this year’s graduates. Data contained in the report was obtained through a Career Development Center survey of January, May and September graduates of Undergraduate Day, Professional and Liberal Studies and Graduate divisions of the university. Each graduate was contacted by email between one and three times from July 2012 through September 2012. Graduates who did not respond via email were then contacted by the Saint Joseph’s University Survey Research Center to complete the survey via telephone. These graduates were contacted between one and five times from October 2012 through December 2012.

THE 2012 UNDERGRADUATE DAY REPORT • Information is based on 693 respondents: 71.8% of the graduating class for whom the University had accurate contact information, 61.0% of total graduates. • 94% of the respondents are employed, volunteering through service programs and/or pursuing additional education. • Saint Joseph’s University Class of 2012 includes recipients of some of the world’s most competitive and prestigious academic awards; among them are five recipients of Fulbright awards, which is the highest number in Saint Joseph’s University’s history. • Post-graduate year-of-service programs continue to attract SJU graduates in impressive numbers. Eighteen graduates (3% of respondents) are involved in full-time volunteer and service programs, such as Alliance for Catholic Education, AmeriCorps, City Year, FrancisCorps, Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Peace Corps and Teach for America. • Graduates who started looking for a job prior to graduation and who utilized the services of the Career Development Center in their search had an average total salary of $47,200 (average base salary of $44,100; average bonus of $3,100). Graduates who found their jobs through the Career Development Center’s on- campus interviewing program had an average total salary of $53,500 (average base salary of $52,500; average bonus of $1,000). Graduates who reported that they began looking for a job after graduation had an average total salary of $39,400 (average base salary of $39,400; no bonuses reported). • The average total starting salary for the class of 2012 was $46,800, with an average base salary of $43,800 and an average bonus of $3,000. The average total starting salary for the class of 2011 was $43,000. • Nearly 93% of graduates reported having participated in at least one semester- long experiential education program; such programs include internships, coop - erative education, part-time jobs resulting in the acquisition of transferable skills, service-based commitments and study abroad. • Graduates who reported having completed at least one internship prior to graduation had an average salary of $45,800. Graduates who had no internship experience had an average salary of $35,000. The post-graduation status of the undergraduate day class of 2012, along with the previous four years’ graduating classes, is represented in the table below.

The On-Campus Recruiting Program at Saint Joseph’s University utilizes SJUcareers, an online system, to connect students with employers. Interviews are conducted on campus in the Career Development Center. As shown in the table below, the program has experienced growth in each of the past five academic years. In fact, the number of interviews conducted on campus has increased by 176% since 2007-2008. The number of employers interviewing on campus also reached a five-year high in the past year, a testament to the talent employers consistently find in Saint Joseph’s University students.

6 Fellowship, Scholarship and Grant Information—Class of 2012

With the assistance of the Office of Fellowships, Saint Joseph’s University’s class of 2012 includes recipients of competitive and prestigious academic awards, including five recipients of Fulbright awards, the highest number in Saint Joseph’s University’s history. These scholars earned a Study Grant to the Duisenberg School of Finance and English Teaching Assistantships to Columbia, Malaysia, Peru and Turkey. Members of the class of 2012 also earned acceptance into the Peace Corps, with placement in Costa Rica, and into Teach for America.

Graduates of the class of 2012 who went on to graduate study were awarded an average of $20,100 in scholarship or grant funding. Awards ranged from $2,000 to $50,000, with many graduates receiving grants for full tuition with room and board included. Over 60% of the graduates enrolled in continuing education were awarded some type of funding for graduate study, with awards totaling almost $500,000.

Of those not currently continuing their education, 150 graduates reported future plans for academic study. 51% indicated they planned to continue their education within 1-2 years, 36% within 3-4 years and 13% in 5 or more years.

The following includes highlights of significant findings from the survey of 2012 Professional and Liberal Studies graduates. Information is based on 48 respondents: 71.0% of the graduating class for whom the University had accurate contact information, 31.4% of total graduates.

• 87% of the respondents are employed and/or pursuing additional education (79% employed, 8% continuing education).

• The average total salary for the Professional and Liberal Studies graduates of 2012 was $49,900 (average base salary of $47,300; average bonus of $2,600).

8% of the Professional and Liberal Studies class of 2012 has chosen to further their education by attending graduate school on a full-time basis. Among the graduate institutions are Saint Joseph’s University, Thomas Edison State University and University of Arizona, where graduates will pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in such areas as Business, Education, Medicine/Healthcare and Social Science.

Eighty-five percent of respondents indicated they had plans to continue their education in the future. In addition, 35% of those who indicated they were employed are also continuing their education on a full- or part-time basis.

The following includes highlights of significant findings from the survey of 2012 graduates of Saint Joseph’s University graduate degree programs. Information is based on 332 respon - dents: 61.8% of the graduating class for whom the University had accurate contact informa - tion, 28.7% of total graduates.

• 98% of the respondents are employed and/or pursuing additional education. Those seeking employment totaled 2%.

• The average total salary for graduate degree program graduates of 2012 was $64,600 (average base salary of $58,500; average bonus of $6,100).

• The average salary for graduates of Graduate Business programs was $77,000 (average base salary of $72,800; average bonus of $4,200). For graduates of Graduate Arts & Science programs, the average total salary was $60,200 (average base salary of $52,900; average bonus of $7,300).

Sixty-seven percent of graduates from SJU’s graduate degree programs reported that they remained with their current employer after graduation. Many of these graduates experienced career enhancements such as promotions, salary increases, title changes and added responsibilities. The table above depicts the type of career-related improvements graduates earned as a result of attaining the graduate degree.
