Explore Sri Lanka with Jetwing Travels

After breakfast leave for Galle (173 KMs - approx. 4hrs drive) en route have a stop to explore traditional fishing techniques of Stilt Fishermen in Weligama.

Galle - Sri Lanka’s most historically interesting town is Galle. It was a major port until about 100 years, but today still handles shipping and sailing boats in the natural harbor. Stroll around the lighthouse and harbor or visit the old town where you can see the traditional lace makers and wood carvers and purchase some the finest souvenirs.

The Dutch Fort in Galle - The South Coast’s major city is Galle, whose oldest landmark is the massive Portuguese and Dutch Fort which is a “World Heritage Site” in which the central city is contained. But the city may be much older. Some scholars believe it to be the “Tar shish” of the Old Testament, to which King Solomon sent his merchant vessels, and to which Jonah fled from the Lord. Today, the 90-acre Galle Fort shows no evidence of the Portuguese founders. The Dutch incorporated the Portuguese northern wall in a great rampart in 1663. A second, taller wall was built inside of it. Between the two walls, a covered passage connected the central bastion with the Fort’s two half bastions overlooking the sea. The Dutch also installed a sophisticated drainage system, complete with brick- lined underground sewers that were flushed twice a day by the high and low tides. The original gate to the fort was by the harbor. It is still there, marked by the British Coat-of-arms on the front and the Dutch V.O.C. (Vereenigde Oost Indische Companies) with the Coat-of-arms with a rooster crest, on the inner side of the Fort.

STILT FISHING - The fishing village of Weligama is famous for the fishing technique used by the fishermen of the village. They cast their lines out while balancing themselves quite cleverly on a 20- 50 meter pole in the shallow waters, which gives its name, stilt fishing. Even though the origins of this strange way of fishing is yet unknown, this may be a good opportunity to chat up a few fishermen who take pride in this unique technique where the fishing poles are guarded with their life and handed down from one generation to another. You may end up with wet clothes by experience stilt fishing. Be prepared with an extra outfit.

OPTIONAL HUMMANAYA BLOWHOLE Hummanaya Blowhole is the only known blowhole in Sri Lanka and it is considered to be the second largest blowhole in the world. Hummanaya refers to the noise, "hoo", that can be heard a distance away when the blowhole is active. Hummanaya is a natural blowhole, and caused when sea water rushes through a submerged cavern and is pushed upwards. The sea water flows underneath the shore, and then comes out of this hole due to pressure. The water fountain created by the geological feature shoots up every couple of minutes, depending on the nature of the sea, with the spray often reaching as high as 25m (82ft) to 30m (98ft). Boat leaves between 06.30hrs from the Mirissa harbor, and the sightings of whales and dolphins may occur after a one- hour ride in the boat. The total duration at sea is about 3 to 5 hours. The total duration for the excursion is 5-6hrs. Distance travelled at sea is around 7-15 nautical miles. You would surely enjoy the complete dive of big mammals with full tail out position so close that you would recon the boat might even flip off. As whales reach the water surface to breathe, they forcefully expel air through the blowhole is another fascinating sight. It is truly fun, exiting experience not to be missed.
