In the heart of our community lies 7th Square, an area recently renovated by the City of West Monroe. Located along North 7th Street, this area holds more combined activities, venues and services for the community than any other single location in West Monroe.
Beginning at the southwest corner of the square, you will nd the Farmer's Market, where local vendors lay out the freshest homegrown produce, as well as jellies, jams, sauces and sea- sonings. Summer brings fresh peas that are shelled by the bushel and late fall features pecans. Special events are held throughout the year, such as the Master Gardeners’ Annual Plant Sale. Some of the plants at the sale are grown in the community beds directly behind the market.
e 7th Square Covered Pavilion provides the perfect location for outdoor musical events, special programs and community gatherings. Recent improvements have made this a family friendly spot for residents and visitors of all ages.
Just steps from the Farmer's Market and Pavilion, the Senior Center boasts the largest facility of its kind in the area. After recent expansions, the facility has three areas that total almost 25,000 square feet. roughout the week, the Senior Center has a non-stop schedule to satisfy the interests of our active senior adults. e sta is trained and knowledgeable, ready to con- nect seniors with services and support to enhance their lives. e Senior Center now serves as an early voting site for Ouachita Parish voters.

Downtown West Monroe Revitalization Group (DWMRG) was formed in 2014 for the purpose of revitalizing the City of West Monroe’s Cotton Port Historic District. DWMRG works to bring together business and property owners, gov- ernment and community leaders and concerned residents with the shared vision of a vibrant, thriving downtown commercial district. Revitalization e orts include physical enhancements to the streetscape and the addition of special programming that will increase visitation. Known to many as “Antique Alley,” the district is lled with a variety of businesses, including restaurants, boutiques, specialty retail shops and professional services.
Since DWMRG’s inception, several key enhancement projects have taken place in the downtown area. Projects include the restoration of two historic Coca-Cola murals located on the exterior walls of downtown buildings and the implementation of medallions painted onto the center of intersections within the downtown district. A self-guided Downtown Walking Tour that highlights the district’s historic buildings will be available online in 2017.

2017 West Monroe / West Ouachita 33 Culture / History source: westmonroe.com A Rich History West Monroe has a rich history lled with strong, determined and conscientious citizens. E orts to settle on the west bank of the Ouachita River were made as early as 1780, but the history of West Monroe begins a bit later. It is centered on two towns, Trenton and Cotton Port, which merged to form the city now known as West Monroe.
In 1815, a locally operated ferry was established linking Fort Miro to the west bank of the Ouachita River and opening the “pine hills” country to entrepreneurs and tradesmen. Cotton became the major crop. e area expanded as merchants, willing to sell goods on credit to cotton farmers, moved to accommodate their customers.
Dr. John Campbell attempted to establish the rst town on the west bank of the Ouachita River in December 1837. He was forced into bankruptcy the following year, which halted the development of his plans. Twenty-two years later, this area would become the town of Cotton Port.
Meanwhile, a Georgia native named William Trent purchased a large tract of land to the north of Campbell’s proposed town. is tract of land is the present-day location of Claiborne Street. While the area predominantly hosts protestant Christian churches, ranging from small country churches to large megachurches, Roman Catholic, Jewish and Muslim inuences can be found as well. Because of the strength of the religious spirit of the people of West Monroe and West Ouachita, neighbors always have multiple resources to turn to during times of need. Many churches operate food pantries in addition to their support of the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana. Additionally, parachurch organizations exist for the sole purpose of helping the most needy in the area to recover from various crises and disas- ters. e religious community greatly supports the school system and o ers many opportu- nities for people to serve those in need.
