And yet the accusations keep coming. How much scrutiny can the two-time Tour de France winner stand? by Michael Hall In May of last year, Lance Armstrong was riding in the Pyrenees, preparing for the upcoming Tour de France. He had just completed the seven-and-a-half-mile ride up Hautacam, a treacherous mountain that rises 4,978 feet above the French countryside. It was 36 degrees and raining, and his team's director, Johan Bruyneel, was waiting with a jacket and a ride back to the training camp. But Lance wasn't ready to go. "It was one of those moments in my life I'll never forget," he told me. "Just the two of us. I said, 'You know what, I don't think I got it. I don't understand it.1 Johan said, 'What do you mean? Of course you got it. Let's go.' I said, 'No, I'm gonna ride all the way down, and I'm gonna do it again.' He was speechless. And I did it again." Lance got it; he understood Hautacam—in a way that would soon become very clear. -

Slate The CDC Comes Out Swinging for Truvada, an HIV-Preventing Miracle Drug http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2014/05/15/cdc_supports_truvada_a_drug_that_preven ts_hiv.html?wpisrc=burger_bar By Mark Joseph Stern Truvada, which prevents HIV infection with a single daily pill, is the miracle drug that almost nobody takes. It prevents HIV more reliably than condoms, which can break. It has exceedingly minimal side effects. It’s covered by most private insurers and state Medicaid programs. But because of its novelty, doctors have been wary of prescribing it—and because of the absurd stigma it still carries, its target audience has been hesitant to take it. That’s all about to change. This week, as part of its cheerfully named Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC came out swinging for Truvada, unequivocally encouraging health care professionals to prescribe the drug to numerous at-risk groups. So far, those groups include anybody in a serodiscordant relationship, non-monogamous gay and bi men who sometimes have unprotected sex, straight men and women who sometimes have unprotected sex with drug users or bi men, and anybody who injects illicit drugs. To my mind, these categories are still a bit under-inclusive. It’s alarmingly easy to get HIV through anal sex: Condoms are more likely to break during anal intercourse than vaginal intercourse, and the HIV transmission risk from anal sex is 18 times higher than from vaginal penetration. As I’ve written before, there’s nothing inherently unhealthy about anal sex. But unless you’re in a monogamous relationship with someone who’s HIV-negative, the risk of HIV transmission during gay anal intercourse is always going to be a little higher than you’re probably comfortable with. -

Times reporter Bruce Rosenthal won the 2020 Gold Keyboard Award, the competition’s highest, for “Taken for a Ride,” an investigative series on corruption in the New York City taxi medallion business. As previously announced, NY Times Writers Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor will receive this year’s “Gabe Pressman Truth to Power Award” for their reporting on the Harvey Weinstein Case. The Gabe Pressman Truth to Power Award recognizes the club’s late president, friend and supporter who was a staunch supporter of the First Amendment. Other major award winners were Spectrum News NY1 for Spot News Reporting on a helicopter crash in Midtown Manhattan in June 2019 and WCBS Newsradio 880 for a shooting at a Kosher delicatessen in Jersey City in December 2019. Steely Dan-perfect. -Dave Grohl, commencing work on the Foo Fighters 2002 record One by One When we speak of popular music, we should speak not of songs but rather; of recordings, which are created in the studio by musicians, engineers and producers who aim not only to capture good performances, but more, to create aesthetic objects. (Zak 200 I, xvi-xvii) In this "interlude" Jon Covach, Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, provides a clear introduction to the basic elements of recorded sound: ambience, which includes reverb and echo; equalization; and stereo placement He also describes a particularly useful means of visualizing and analyzing recordings. The student might begin by becoming sensitive to the three dimensions of height (frequency range), width (stereo placement) and depth (ambience), and from there go on to con sider other special effects. One way to analyze the music, then, is to work backward from the final product, to listen carefully and imagine how it was created by the engineer and producer. To illustrate this process, Covach provides analyses .of two songs created by famous producers in different eras: Steely Dan's "Josie" and Phil Spector's "Da Doo Ron Ron:' Records, tapes, and CDs are central to the history of rock music, and since the mid 1990s, digital downloading and file sharing have also become significant factors in how music gets from the artists to listeners. Live performance is also important, and some groups-such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and more recently Phish and Widespread Panic-have been more oriented toward performances that change from night to night than with authoritative versions of tunes that are produced in a recording studio. -

360° DEALS: AN INDUSTRY REACTION TO THE DEVALUATION OF RECORDED MUSIC SARA KARUBIAN* I. INTRODUCTION In October of 2007, Radiohead released In Rainbows without a record label. The band’s contract with record company EMI had been fulfilled in 2003, and Radiohead did not bother finding a new deal as they began recording their seventh album.1 Radiohead then made the album available at www.inrainbows.com, where fans were instructed to “pay-what-you- want” for the digital download.2 Shortly after the album’s release, the band’s front man, Thom Yorke, said “I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one. And, yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say ‘F___ you’ to this decaying business model.”3 It was no surprise that Radiohead received critical acclaim for the artistic merits of the album,4 or that millions of fans found a way to acquire the music. Its financial success, however, was less predictable. Radiohead declined to release statistics related to its pay-what-you-want model, but a conservative estimate suggests that the band’s profits from this digital release exceeded six and a half million.5 Furthermore, when Radiohead contracted with iTunes and a distributor to sell the album on iTunes and in stores, its high sales pushed it to the top of traditional album charts6 in early * J.D. Paul PSCI 11 Stetson g19 Griffin 6 597-2327 TWR 10am-noon [email protected] Office Hrs.: Mondays 2:00pm - 4:00pm and by appointment Course Description It has been said that U2 is the "world's greatest rock band" – but is it also (unknown to most) the world's greatest – and most unusual – Christian rock band? This course explores the theology, spirituality and politics of U2 expressed through the group's songs, stage performances and human right campaigns. We will travel from the band's origins in the Shalom Christian Fellowship in Dublin to their overtly Christian second album October (1981); the culmination of their superstardom in Joshua Tree (1987); through their techno and ultra-ironic 1990s marked by Zoo-TV, PopMart and Bono's "mock the devil" phase as Mr. MacPhisto; and a return to their roots in All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (2004). Along the way, we will listen to a lot of U2, watch some videos and tour footage – but it's not all fun and games. We will also read serious theological and philosophical tracts on U2 lyrics and explore the band's complicated interweaving of faith, sexuality, grace, fame, doubt, justice, and the meaning of America in a way which makes them a surprisingly popular and poignant spiritual voice in our superficial and materialistic age. We will also delve into the group's human rights and social justice work, from Band Aid in the ‘80s to (Product)RED today, and in particular explore Bono's Christian social justice moorings.
