Kangaroo Valley Arts Festival A weekend of classical and fine contemporary music, sculpture and performance in the heart of Australia’s most beautiful valley.
Pictures at an Exhibition Simon Tedeschi
Friday May 1, 8:00pm – Kangaroo Valley Hall
A unique event opens our Music and Art theme: pianist Simon Tedeschi will perform Mussorgsky’s iconic Pictures at an Exhibition in the original piano version. To make this event unique in the history of performances of this music, ten artists have been commissioned to paint a picture for each of the ten movements. These paintings will be screened during the performance and will be hung on the walls in the hall, along with some of the original pictures that inspired Mussorgsky.
We encourage you to arrive any time after 7:15pm to enjoy a drink and the chance to meet your fellow Festival attendees and performers.

A gentle walk to a superb view of Shoalhaven Gorge, ringing with masterful didgeridoo playing.
Hausmusik Kevin Hunt
Saturday May 2, 2:30pm – Constable House
Jazz pianist Kevin Hunt’s musical style mixes composition with improvisation. In his playing, he encompasses many of the stylistic developments which have occurred in jazz since the 1920s. He has developed this eclectic mix of styles through his experiences in more than thirty years of performing and recording with Don Burrows, Judy Bailey, Guy Straz, Steve Hunter, Bob Barnard, James Morrison and the classical virtuoso Simon Tedeschi.
Kevin’s program will include traditional aboriginal melodies, Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, Bach, Ravel and Gismonti and birdsong.
Hausmusik David Hudson
Saturday May 2, 2:30pm – Sassafras
David Hudson, the Cairns-based didgeridoo player, is multi-talented. He is not only a talented didg player but also has an engaging way of bringing indigenous culture, in both music and art, to his audience. He is one of the few artists who can perform in both worlds. He will play, make a painting, and connect their themes.
Hausmusik David Pereira and Carlos Barrios Saturday May 2, 2:30pm – Alcheringa
David Pereira (cello) and acclaimed Robertson artist Carlos Barrios will present a program where the music and the painting will unfold before your ears and eyes in one of the most spectacular homes in Kangaroo Valley.
Guitar Snaps Leonard and Slava Grigoryan Saturday May 2, 6:30pm – Kangaroo Valley Hall
Leonard Grigoryan has been a passionate photographer for many years, and has taken some striking and thought-provoking images. We asked him to devise a program in which the music and the pictures speak to each other.
The program will include improvising and some ethereally atmospheric music, including Phil Houghton’s Wave Radiance, and will feature excerpts from Len and Slava’s latest CD release.
Supper with the Performers Jing Jo and Bistro One46 Saturday May 2, 8:45pm
We have arranged Festival tables at two of the Valley’s terrific restaurants where you can dine and mingle with other festival-goers and our performers and artists.

The Painted Piano Sunday May 3, 11:00am – Constable House
Beautiful panels created by indigenous students at Menindee in far west NSW for the Stuart piano will be displayed during this duo recital of works created to celebrate the intersection of indigenous and western artforms. Photos of the piano being painted by the art students and a short film about the project will be shown.
Kevin Hunt’s composition for two pianos (Boesendorfer and electric piano) is inspired by these art works by the Menindee art students. Themes of the suite were originally performed by Kevin with the music students of Menindee Central School in 2012 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In this performance he will be joined by his long-time collaborator, Simon Tedeschi.
Resounding Rachmaninov David Pereira and Timothy Young

Together they will perform the sumptuously romantic Rachmaninov Cello Sonata, preceded by works to commemorate both the life of Peter Sculthorpe and the 70th birthday of Kangaroo Valley composer Martin Wesley-Smith.
