It teaches you the initial skills you need to use the Genera system effectively. We present concepts you need to know, as well as providing exercises andactivitiesthatturnthoseconceptsintopracticalskills. The material covered in the first group of chapters in this workbook is a pre- requisite for all Symbolics Education Services Courses. However, you can com plete the second and third sections after taking your first course. Practicing the material helpsyou learn it faster. Bring this workbook to all courses you take with Symbolics. We expect that you have used a computer before; we do not expect that you have used a Symbolics computer before. You need to learn this material whether or not you are a programmer. This is not a programming textbook. We make no assumptions about your programming background or future; this work bookisforbothprogrammersandnonprogrammers. Every time we use a term for the first time, we put it in italics. If you see a term you don’t recognize, be sure to check the glossary at the end of the work book. The name Lisp comes from LISt Processing Language. Initial ideas for Lisp were formulated in 1956-1958; some were implemented in FLPL (FORTRAN-based List Processing Language). The first Lisp implementation, for application to AI problems, took place 1958-1962 at MIT. There are many dialects of Lisp. Perhaps the most commonly used dialect is Common Lisp, which includes CLOS, the Common Lisp Object System. The structure of Lisp makes it easy to extend the language or even to implement entirely new dialects without starting from scratch. Overall, the evolution of Lisp has been guided more by institutional rivalry, one-upsmanship, and the glee born of technical cleverness that is characteristic of the “hacker culture” than by sober assessments of technical requirements. Nevertheless this process has eventually produced both an industrial- strength programming language, messy but powerful, and a technically pure dialect, small but powerful, that is suitable for use by programming-language theoreticians. We pick up where McCarthy’s paper in the first HOPL conference left off. We trace the development chronologically from the era of the PDP-6, through the heyday of Interlisp and MacLisp, past the ascension and decline of special purpose Lisp machines, to the present era of standardization activities. We then examine the technical evolution of a few representative language features, including both some notable successes and some notable failures, that illuminate design issues that distinguish Lisp from other programming languages. We also discuss the use of Lisp as a laboratory for designing other programming languages. We conclude with some reflections on the forces that have driven the evolution of Lisp. -

An Introduction to ESS + XEmacs for Windows Users of R John Fox∗ McMaster University Revised: 23 January 2005 1WhyUseESS+XEmacs? Emacs is a powerful and widely used programmer’s editor. One of the principal attractions of Emacs is its programmability: Emacs can be adapted to provide customized support for program- ming languages, including such features as delimiter (e.g., parenthesis) matching, syntax highlight- ing, debugging, and version control. The ESS (“Emacs Speaks Statistics”) package provides such customization for several common statistical computing packages and programming environments, including the S family of languages (R and various versions of S-PLUS), SAS, and Stata, among others. The current document introduces the use of ESS with R running under Microsoft Windows. For some Unix/Linux users, Emacs is more a way of life than an editor: It is possible to do almost everything from within Emacs, including, of course, programming, but also writing documents in mark-up languages such as HTML and LATEX; reading and writing email; interacting with the Unix shell; web browsing; and so on. I expect that this kind of generalized use of Emacs will not be attractive to most Windows users, who will prefer to use familiar, and specialized, tools for most of these tasks. There are several versions of the Emacs editor, the two most common of which are GNU Emacs, a product of the Free Software Foundation, and XEmacs, an offshoot of GNU Emacs. Both of these implementations are free and are available for most computing platforms, including Windows. In my opinion, based only on limited experience, XEmacs offers certain advantages to Windows users, such as easier installation, and so I will explain the use of ESS under this version of the Emacs editor.1 As I am writing this, there are several Windows programming editors that have been customized for use with R. -

LISP: PROGRAM IS DATA A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON MACLISP Jon L White Laboratory for Computer Science, M.I.T.* ABSTRACT For over 10 years, MACLISP has supported a variety of projects at M.I.T.'s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and the Laboratory for Computer Science (formerly Project MAC). During this time, there has been a continuing development of the MACLISP system, spurred in great measure by the needs of MACSYMAdevelopment. Herein are reported, in amosiac, historical style, the major features of the system. For each feature discussed, an attempt will be made to mention the year of initial development, andthe names of persons or projectsprimarily responsible for requiring, needing, or suggestingsuch features. INTRODUCTION In 1964,Greenblatt and others participated in thecheck-out phase of DigitalEquipment Corporation's new computer, the PDP-6. This machine had a number of innovative features that were thought to be ideal for the development of a list processing system, and thus it was very appropriate that thefirst working program actually run on thePDP-6 was anancestor of thecurrent MACLISP. This earlyLISP was patterned after the existing PDP-1 LISP (see reference l), and was produced by using the text editor and a mini-assembler on the PDP-1. That first PDP-6 finally found its way into M.I.T.'s ProjectMAC for use by theArtificial lntelligence group (the A.1. grouplater became the M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and Project MAC became the Laboratory for Computer Science). By 1968, the PDP-6 wasrunning the Incompatible Time-sharing system, and was soon supplanted by the PDP-IO.Today, the KL-I 0, anadvanced version of thePDP-10, supports a variety of time sharing systems, most of which are capable of running a MACLISP.
