A noxious weed is defined as “any plant or plant product that can directly or indirectly injure or cause damage to crops (including nursery stock or plant products), livestock, poultry, or other interests of agriculture, irrigation, navigation, the natural resources of the United States, the public health, or the environment” (7 U.S.C. § 7701-7786, 2000). We use weed risk assessment (WRA)—specifically, the PPQ WRA model (Koop et al., 2012)—to evaluate the risk potential of plants, including those newly detected in the United States, those proposed for import, and those emerging as weeds elsewhere in the world. Because the PPQ WRA model is geographically and climatically neutral, it can be used to evaluate the baseline invasive/weed potential of any plant species for the entire United States or for any area within it.

This is an inventory of the vascular alien flora of Catalonia (northeastern Iberian Peninsula, Spain) updated to 2018, representing 1068 alien taxa in total. 554 (52.0%) out of them are casual and 514 (48.0%) are established. 87 taxa (8.1% of the total number and 16.8 % of those established) show an invasive behaviour. The geographic zone with more alien plants is the most anthropogenic maritime area. However, the differences among regions decrease when the degree of naturalization of taxa increases and the number of invaders is very similar in all sectors. Only 26.2% of the taxa are more or less abundant, while the rest are rare or they have vanished. The alien flora is represented by 115 families, 87 out of them include naturalised species. The most diverse genera are Opuntia (20 taxa), Amaranthus (18 taxa) and Solanum (15 taxa). Most of the alien plants have been introduced since the beginning of the twentieth century (70.7%), with a strong increase since 1970 (50.3% of the total number). Almost two thirds of alien taxa have their origin in Euro-Mediterranean area and America, while 24.6% come from other geographical areas. The taxa originated in cultivation represent 9.5%, whereas spontaneous hybrids only 1.2%. From the temporal point of view, the rate of Euro-Mediterranean taxa shows a progressive reduction parallel to an increase of those of other origins, which have reached 73.2% of introductions during the last 50 years.

We overcame a summertime ‘crash’ of our laboratory colonies, and by year’s end had strong colonies of both the gall fly, Parafreutreta regalis, and the stem-boring moth, Digitivalva delaireae. By the end of 2004, we had tested more than 80 species of plants, and neither of our candidate agents was able to complete development on anything other than their Cape ivy host. The single dark cloud has been the continuing downturn in external funds to support our Cape ivy research, especially that conducted by our cooperators in Pretoria, South Africa. While we have managed to maintain a small research effort there, our cooperators are no longer assisting us in our host range evaluations.

This ‘petition’ will be submitted to TAG during the second quarter of 2007. We hope to receive a positive recommendation from TAG within 6 months. The outlook for receiving a release permit from USDA-APHIS-PPQ has improved, but is still not clear.

The names Cacalia auriculata, Cacalia fimbrillifera (nom. nov., nom. superfl. et illeg. pro Eupatorium auriculatum), Cacalia scandens by Thunberg, Cineraria crassiflora, Eupatorium scandens by Link (nom. illeg.), Mikania senecioides (nom. illeg.), Senecio auriculatum, and Senecio mikanioides are also investigated and discussed. A plant that occurs at forest margins and coastal areas. FEATURES Glabrous, scandent, perennial herb, sometimes forming a dense tangled shrub up to 2m tall. Stems usu. sparingly branched. Leaves petiolate; petiole generally = lamina, not amplexicaul; lamina not lobed, ovate to deltoid, obtuse to acute, mucronate, obtuse to truncate at base, coarsely toothed with 1~3 convex-sided teeth on each side and lowermost teeth often distinctly larger, approx. 30~60 x 25~50mm; venation palmate- Senecio angulatus. The leaves are arrow shaped with 1 to 3 convex teeth on the sides. A plant that is a scrambling shrub. The flowers are conspicuously yellow. The flower is small, five-rayed and yellow.

Weedy Vines on the South Coast
English ivy Japanese honeysuckle Mile-a-minute St Vincent lilac Weedy vines Morning glory Banana passionfruit Black-eyed Susan on the South Coast Moth vine Madeira vine Climbing asparagus Dolichos pea VINES Cape ivy Bluebell creeper Climbing groundsel Many vines grown as ornamentals in our gardens have escaped into the bush around towns and farms, where they grow over the top of other plants, blocking the sunlight from their leaves, and weakening or even killing them. Most of them can smother groundcovers and shrubs and the larger species climb high into the canopy where they may smother trees. Few of these vines are listed as noxious weeds as they are generally not a problem for agriculture, but some of them are listed as Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) because of the damage their rampant growth can do to natural ecosystems. This leaflet covers some of the worst weedy vines of the south coast. The best way to help prevent the spread of weedy vines is not to grow them in your garden. Many have fleshy fruits that are dispersed over long distances by birds, or light, wind-blown seed, so they are well adapted to jumping the garden fence.
