Using Zoom to Record ● Create a Zoom account. It is free. ​ ● You’ll need to download and install the software package. To do so, go to Zoom’s ​ Download Center and select the “Download” button under “Zoom Client for ​ Meetings.” ● When you start Zoom, you’ll be offered a few different options. Select the orange “New Meeting” icon to start a new meeting.

Sessions with Single Presenters ● Login to your Zoom meeting. ● Connect your audio. ● Drag your view to the top right corner.

● Open up your slide deck. ● Share your screen to show your slides. ● Put your slides into Present mode. ● Start Record by selecting the “More” tab, then clicking Record (or press Alt+R to automatically start your recording).

● Wait 5 seconds on the title screen, then advance to your speaker introduction slide and begin speaking. ● When finished with your presentation, leave your final slide up, take a few moments of silence and then click Stop Record.

Session with Multiple Presenters ● You can invite other speakers using the “Invite” button at the bottom of the window. Select “Email” to invite other speakers via email.

● In the free version of Zoom, only the host is allowed to record the meeting in Zoom. If you are presenting with others, it is helpful to have another presenter manage the screen sharing and slide advancement. This will create a cleaner recording view. To give permission for all Participants to screen share, click on Security along the bottom, go to “Allow participants to:” and ensure that Share Screen is checked.

● Designate a Slide Manager, who will be managing the screen share and advancing the slides, open up the slide deck. ● The Slide Manager will need to click “Share Screen” ● The Slide Manager will need to put the slides into Present mode. ● The view for the Host should default to Side-by-Side view, with all the presenters appearing in a column on the left-hand side of the screen share content. If only one presenter is appearing, click the button in the upper right-hand corner to toggle to Gallery view. Sample view:

● The Host should ensure all presenters are ready and give them a countdown to hitting record. ● The Host will click Record or press Alt+R to start recording.

● Wait 5 seconds on the title screen, then the Slide Manager will advance to the speaker introduction slide. ● The first speaker will begin speaking. ● The Host can pause the recording by (1) selecting the Pause button or end the recording by (2) selecting the Stop button.

How to access your recording ● To access your recording, open the Zoom app and select the “Meetings” tab. ● In the left pane, select the “Recorded” option. You’ll now see a list of recorded meetings. Select your recording. ● In the right pane, you now have the option to play the recording (with or without video), delete it, or open the file location in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac). Select the Open option to download your file.

Troubleshooting your Recording AASHE is unable to provide specific technical support related to recording software besides Zoom. If you need support for your recording software, refer to its documentation or visit the software developer's website. Below are some common issues and recommended solutions.

Video shows an infinite image Issue: While recording my video, the recording shows repeating windows inside each ​ other. Solution: This happens when the recording software is being directed to record itself, ​ which in turn is recording itself, and so on and on. 1. Record a window instead of your full screen. ○ When the recording software prompts you to select what to record, select the window of your presentation rather than your entire screen. ○ To show a PowerPoint in a window: Go to the Slide Show tab, then click Set Up Slide Show. In the dialog window that opens, select Browsed by an individual (window). Click OK. When you start your presentation, it will now display in a window you can select in the recording software. ○ Apple Keynote does not yet have a windowed mode. 2. Record web content in a different browser than the recording software. ○ If your presentation is hosted in a web browser, or if you need to open a browser page and show web content as part of your presentation, use a completely different browser than the recording software is using. For

example: if you are recording using Google Chrome, open your web content in Firefox or Safari.

Sound isn't being recorded 1. Make sure your is equipped with either a webcam, audio headset with , or standalone microphone. ○ It is common for to have , but not all desktop do. ○ If you are using an audio headset or headphones, it needs to have a built in microphone. 2. If you have an external webcam, headset, or microphone, check that it is connected to your computer and turned on. ○ Many audio devices turn on automatically when needed, but yours may have a power switch. ○ Webcams usually plug in to an available USB port on your computer. ○ A wired audio headset or standalone microphone may need to be plugged into an available USB port, or into the computer's headphone or microphone jack. ○ If you have a wireless headset, it needs to be turned on and paired with your computer. 3. Apps may need permission to use your microphone. ○ Windows 10: To let apps access the microphone, select Start, then select Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Select Change, then turn on Allow apps to access your microphone. More information from Microsoft here. ​ ○ Mac OS: In System Preferences, click the Security & Privacy icon. Select the Privacy tab at the top. In the left side list, select Microphone. If your web browser or recording software appears in this list, the checkbox should be checked. More information from Apple here. ​ ○ Web Browser: Your web browser may not be set up to use your microphone. Check the privacy settings of your web browser to see if microphone access is allowed. 4. Your microphone or camera is muted. ○ If your computer has more than one audio source, make sure you are choosing the one you are using. ○ There could be a hardware mute button on your device, or your system may have a universal mute option that is checked.

The audio is too quiet Issue: I can hear my voice, but it is very quiet and difficult to hear. ​ Solutions: ​ 1. Speak closer to the microphone. ○ Try moving closer to your webcam or microphone. ○ If you are using a headset that has a built-in microphone, it may need to be closer to your face. 2. Your audio input levels are low. ○ Windows 10: Select Start, then select Settings > System > Sound. In Input, select your , then select Device Properties. Adjust the Microphone and Microphone Boost sliders as needed, then select OK. More information from Microsoft here. ○ Mac OS: In System Preferences, click the Sound icon. Select the Input tab at the top. Select your input device, then adjust the Input Volume slider as needed.

Audio is too noisy or stutters Issue: There is an audible noise, or the sound is similar to a bad phone connection. ​ Solutions: ​ 1. Move further away from the microphone to reduce distortion. ○ Give yourself a little more distance between you and the webcam or microphone. ○ If you are using a headset with a built-in microphone, move the mic further away from your face. 2. Reduce the noise in your surroundings. ○ The microphone may be picking up the sounds in your environment. Try to find a quiet place to record. ○ Computers and their accessories may also produce noise the microphone is picking up. A headset with an adjustable microphone can make a big difference in reducing outside noise. 3. Your computer may be performing background tasks. ○ Background tasks like backups, virus scans, and anything else that might use a lot of disk access can affect your recording performance. ○ Quit all applications and tasks that are not essential to your presentation until you are done recording and satisfied with the result.

Sound from media is not being recorded Issue: If your presentation contains sound content or video with sound, it is a technical ​ challenge for recording software to capture both your voice and sound from the media. Solutions: ​ ● Try playing the audio or video sound through your computer speakers. Having your microphone pick up both your voice and the sound playback while you are recording your presentation could work as a simple solution.
