macintyrehudson.co.uk BEDFORDSHIRE GOLF CLUB A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CLUB AND OUR MAJOR COMPETITIONS Bedfordshire Golf Club was formed in 1891. Initially it was located 1 mile from Bedford town centre on fields adjoining Brickhill Farm, opposite the water mill on Clapham Road. When it opened the course had only nine holes and the entrance fee and the annual subscription were just £1 each! The club moved from this site to Biddenham four years later in 1895 where a full 18 hole course was built. This was the club’s home for 105 years until we bought the land at Stagsden and purpose built our own courses and buildings, which of course were opened in September 2000 by Laura Davies CBE.
Bedfordshire Golf Club was struck by fire at the beginning of the twentieth century and later in 1954. Sadly many of our club records and trophies were lost or badly damaged and this explains why our trophy records date only from that time. Below however, are details of some of the most historic and important club competitions. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP There has been a Club Championship since the club was first formed. Ours is a medal competition played over 36 holes against par off scratch. It is played concurrently with a net competition for the Biddenham Cup. Sadly our ‘Club Champions’ records go back only to 1959, but the current member who won the championship the longest time ago is Stewart Kenny. He won it in 1970. LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP, SAVILL SALVERS AND MILLENNIUM TROPHY The Ladies have always had their own Club Champion and there have been lady members since the day the Club was founded. It used to be played over three days with the best four finishers off scratch playing a semi-final, and the two winners playing in the final to establish the champion. It is now a straight 36 hole competition. The Savill Salvers were presented by Jean and Julia Savill in 1991 and the Millennium Trophy was presented by Sam Turnbull in 2001 they are played on the same day as the Ladies Championship. THE CALCUTTA CUP This is one of our oldest men’s competitions. Ken Vane-Percy’s father presented the trophy before WWII. He was a financier working in Calcutta and KVP was sent home to Bedford School, at which time he joined the golf club. The Club had many military connections after the war because of the Harper Trust schools. The Calcutta Cup is a singles knock-out competition with the difference in handicaps being represented by holes up or down at the outset. THE GUY PYM CUP Guy Pym was one of the club’s founders and the first Club Captain in both 1891 and 1892 and he donated the trophy for this historic competition. It is an 18 hole singles stableford format. DEACON CUP This Trophy was presented by Colonel H. Deacon, known always as “Deak,” in 1934. It has always been the men’s favourite competition each year and is preceded by a black-tie dinner the evening before the big day. At the dinner the draw takes place for starting times and partners. For many years there was an auction at which members could bid for the player they fancied to win, but latterly the bids reached such heights that this was dropped in case members found themselves breaching amateur status rules! The competition is a medal, on handicap, played over 18 holes in threes. THE ADAMS TROPHIES The Adams Trophies were presented in 1973 by Mrs Pat Adams who was a member from 1924 and mother of Mrs E Hawkins. Mrs Adams felt the ladies missed out and wanted to replicate the Men’s Deacon Cup. She was County President, County Vice-Captain and Ladies Secretary for 16 years as well as Ladies Club Champion. She survived almost until 2000 and her daughter Beth followed her as Ladies Club Champion winning on 13 occasions. Mrs E Hawkins presented the Salver in 2000. This medal competition is played on a Tuesday and players must attend the dinner. THE ASHES CUP This trophy was made from the melted silver remains of old club cups and salvers found in the ashes after the 1954 fire at the club house in Biddenham. The competition is preceded the evening before by a supper after which partners are drawn. It is played in mixed stableford foursomes format.
