Step by Step Guide

What exactly is Twitter? What is Tweeting? Twitter is micro blogging. Twitter, and 'tweeting', is about broadcasting daily short burst messages to the world, with the hope that your messages are useful and interesting to someone. Twitter is a blend of , blogging and texting, but with brief content and a very broad audience. If you don't like to write, but are curious about a celebrity, a particular hobby topic, or even a long-lost cousin, then Twitter is one way to connect with that person or topic. How does Twitter work? Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 280 character messages called "tweets". Registered users can read and post tweets, but unregistered users can only read them. Tweets are publicly visible by default, but users can restrict message delivery to just their followers. This can be done through a setting which allows you to protect your tweets and limit it to your followers only. Click on Settings and privacy, then privacy and safety. You will then see the option to Protect your Tweets, click on this to enable accordingly. Users can tweet via the Twitter website or via the Twitter application that can be downloaded on your smartphone/tablet. Both tweets and retweets can be tracked to see which ones are most popular. Users can follow other users and this will allow them to see their tweets. If a particular user follows you and you do not want them to see your tweets, this user can be blocked.

17 | Page

The first step is to understand and master the dialect

 Tweet: A 280-character message.

 Retweet (RT): Re-sharing or giving credit to someone else's tweet.

 Feed: The stream of tweets you see on your homepage. It's comprised of updates from users you follow.

 Handle: Your username.

 Mention (@): A way to reference another user by his username in a tweet. Users are notified when @mentioned. It's a way to conduct discussions with other users in a public realm.

 Direct Message (DM): A private, 280-character message between two people. You can decide whether to accept a Direct Message from any Twitter user, or only from users you are following. You may only DM a user who follows you.

 Hashtag (#): A way to denote a topic of conversation or participate in a larger linked discussion. A hashtag is a discovery tool that allows others to find your tweets, based on topics. You can also click on a hashtag to see all the tweets that mention it in real time — even from people you don't follow.

To get started you will need the following:

 Active email address and password  Internet connection

Step 1 – Opening browser Click on the start button (bottom left) and launch an internet browser. This may be Google Chrome, Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge etc.

When you enter your telephone number, a code will be sent your mobile phone. Enter this code and click “Verify”.

Step 6 – Choosing a username

You can also follow someone via the person or group’s Twitter profile: 1. First search for that particular profile you want to follow 2. The profile you search for will appear if it exists. Click on that profile 3. When you are on their page, click the “Follow” button. You will now be following that profile!

19 | Page

To unfollow a Twitter profile: 1. Go on the Twitter profile that you are following 2. Hover over the “Following” button. The button should change to red in colour and say “Unfollow” 3. Click “Unfollow”. You will not be following this profile anymore. The button should then change to white in colour and say “Follow”. This confirms you have successfully unfollowed the profile

Step 9 - Confirming your account Setting up your Home account page. You will see a red banner at the top of the screen asking you to confirm your new Twitter account. You can do this by accessing the email from the email account address you used to initially sign up to Twitter with. Click “Confirm now” to verify your account. This should redirect you to your Twitter Home. Step 12 – Settings and privacy There are many sections on the settings and privacy page.  Account (changing details, deactivating account etc.)  Privacy and safety  Changing your Password
