Lepiforums-Europaliste der Schmetterlinge (Version 6, Stand 1. Januar 2019) – Hinweise zur Liste Bearbeitet von Erwin Rennwald & Jürgen Rodeland Hinweise zur Liste Die Version 6 vom 1. Januar 2019 löst die Version 5.2 vom 10. April 2018 ab. Sie enthält jetzt 10.543 für Europa akzeptierte Arten und zusätzlich die 47 seit der ersten Version unserer Liste gestrichenen Arten, also insgesamt 10.590 Einträge. In die zum freien Download verfügbar gemachte Excel-Liste selbst wurden diesmal auch – soweit vorhanden – die deutschen Namen aufgenommen. Seit der Version 5.2. vom 10. TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

Let’s face it, July has been terrible. It’s been the wettest summer on record, and when it hasn’t been raining, it’s usually been cool, windy and grey. There have been very few opportunities to get out and look at insects, so consequently not a great deal has been recorded. But August is looking up, and certainly as I write this on August 1st the sun is shining and the forecast is set fair. In this edition I look at the limited highlights of the last month, as well as continue with the next section of the Pyralid review. I’ll continue doing these over the next few bulletins, and once I’ve finished Pyralids, maybe move on to some other group of micros. Please do take note of the information on National Moth Night (below). If the weather is not too bad, I really hope we can get some good participation and results. Given that so many species emerged very early in April, I am expecting there to be a number of unusual 2nd broods of things during August. If you do note any species that seems unusual at this time of year, I would like to hear about it. Otherwise, good luck all with August mothing, and let’s hope for some nice surprises…. I noticed quite a few Silver Y Autographa gamma at Pembrey by day on 31st July, so maybe there will be a little spell of migration. -

HECKFORD 67 Newnham Road, Plympton, Plymouth, Devon PL7 4AW,U.K. Synopsis Accounts are given of the ova and larvae of Scoparia ambigualis (Treitschke, 1829) and Eudonia pallida (Curtis, 1827); it is noted that the early instars of the latter occurring from the autumn to spring differ from those occurring in the summer. Key words: Lepidoptera, Pyralidae, Scoparia ambigualis, Eudonia pallida, ovum, larva. Introduction The ovum of Scoparia ambigualis was described from captive material as long ago as 1901, together with a brief account of the first instar larva. A fuller description was published in 1921. The larva was not found in the wild until 1986, the final instar was not described until 2004 and the other instars do not appear to have been noted until now. The ovum and first and last instars of Eudonia pallida were described from captive material in 1924, but apparently it was not until 2003 that a larva was found in the wild, and was described the following year.This paper provides observations on the ovum and early instars of S. ambigualis and a fuller account of the ovum and instars of E. pallida, noting that in the latter species there is a difference, both in the habits and appearance of the early instars, between those occurring in the autumn to spring and those in the summer. Scoparia ambigualis (Treitschke, 1829) Buckler (1901: 188) appears to have been the first to give an account of the ovum and the first, but no other, instar from ova that he had received on 18 August 1871. -

A Remarkable New Species of the Genus Catatinagma Rebel, 1903 (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) from Turkmenistan

A new highly specialized Catatinagma Rebel, 1903 species is described from Turkmenistan. Both sexes have completely reduced hindwings and strongly reduced forewings. The adults are active in February, jumping amongst Carex physodes M. Bieb. and being associated with rodent burrows. The new species is similar to Metanarsia trisignella Bidzilya, 2008, in the male genitalia. Both species are placed here provisionally in Catatinagma Rebel, 1903, and their position within Apatetrini is briefly discussed. The adult and the genitalia of both sexes are illustrated, and the behaviour of the new species is described. Introduction As a result of my study of material deposited in the Zoological Institute of the Russian Acade- my of Sciences (Russia, Sankt-Petersburg, ZIN), a very remarkable narrow-winged species of Gelechiidae with prominent frontal process from Repetek Nature Reserve (SE Turkmenistan) was discovered. As it turned out after a detailed examination, the species was an undescribed member of the subfamily Apatetrinae, tribe Apatetrini (Karsholt et al. 2013) but its generic assignment was unclear. A well-developed beak-shaped frontal process on the head and stenoptery in both sexes with fully reduced hindwing were recognized as external morphological specializations of the new species. -

It is managed as a river protection reserve and conservation area by Canterbury Regional Council, having been retired from grazing since 1985. This report describes the insect fauna associated with indigenous and semi-indigenous forest, shrubland-grassland and riverbed vegetation of north Rakaia Island. A total of 119 insect species of which 112 (94%) are indigenous were recorded from the area during survey and sampling in 2012-13. North Rakaia Island is of very high ecological significance for its remnant indigenous vegetation and flora (including four nationally threatened plant species), its insect communities, and insect-plant relationships. This survey, which focused on Lepidoptera, found many of the common and characteristic moths and butterflies that would have been abundant across the Canterbury Plains before European settlement. Three rare/threatened species and several new species of indigenous moth were also found. -
