IDAHO FOOTBALL | GAME NOTES IT STARTS AT THE TOP HEAD COACH PAUL PETRINO EXPERIENCE

IDAHO 2013-PRESENT ► 2016 SUN BELT CONFERENCE COACH OF THE YEAR Head coach/receivers

Paul Petrino is in his fifth season as Idaho’s head coach, ARKANSAS 2012 fresh off the finest year yet. Petrino was voted the 2016 Offensive coordinator Coach of the Year by the Sun Belt Conference after a season during which the Vandals became bowl eligible for the first Quarterbacks time since 2009 – and won their bowl outing in record- setting, and entertaining, fashion. ILLINOIS 2010-11 The Vandals’ bowl eligibility was the result of their posting Offensive coordinator their best regular-season record since the 1998 team (Idaho’s Receivers first bowl team) went 8-3. They wrapped up the year 9-4 after beating Colorado State 61-50 in the Famous Idaho Potato ARKANSAS 2008-09 Bowl – largely recognized as one of the most entertaining Offensive coordinator of the bowl season. It was the highest scoring of the bowl games of 2016 and quarterback and bowl MVP Matt Linehan had one of the top pass efficiency ratings of any quarterback involved in Receivers post-season play. ATLANTA FALCONS 2007 The bowl victory was the culmination of not just gritty, determined efforts week-in and week-out during 2016, but of the first four years of Petrino’s reign. After back-to-back one-victory seasons, Receivers the Vandals were 4-8 in 2015. That marked the beginning of the on-field visibility of the process that started in December 2012 when Petrino was hired. LOUISVILLE 2003-06 Offensive coordinator Since his accountability-based approach has been in place, the Vandals’ APR improved by more than 100 points while their grade-point average increase equally impressive. He was using the Receivers same approach to elevating the classroom successes as he was on the field where effort and discipline were being preached day in and day out. SOUTHERN MISS. 2000-02 The result was the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl victory and one of the most incredible program Quarterbacks turnarounds in history. The program had waded through three successive one-victory seasons (one under the previous staff) before four wins in 2015 and the 9-4 2016 team. LOUISVILLE 1998-99 It took an unfaltering work ethic and a commitment to doing everything right for the program to Receivers be on the solid footing it is today. Bits and pieces of the progress made deep within the program were evident before the wins started to build on the field. Broc Westlake, a linebacker throughout UTAH STATE 1995-97 Petrino’s tenure, graduated in December 2015 with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and was Receivers one of two Vandals to earn the department’s prestigious Rich and Mary Fox Award, which is given Special teams annually to the graduating student-athlete(s) with the highest cumulative grade-point average. In graduating Summa Cum Laude, he also was recognized as a National Football Foundation’s Hampshire Honor Society. IDAHO 1992-94 Running backs In 2015, the Vandals led the Sun Belt in seven statistical categories and were second in another Receivers five. Those conference rankings translated to their being in the top 25 percent nationally in 11 categories. Special teams

From the minute he arrived on the University of Idaho campus, Petrino infused the Vandals with CARROLL COLLEGE 1990-91 an intensity that reverberated around the Kibbie Dome and throughout the Vandal Family. His practices mirror his personality – focused, intense and determined. Offensive coordinator Quarterbacks In his first season back at Idaho, he took the Vandals against a schedule that featured not only the eventual national champion, but a total of seven bowl teams, which included four teams that, at one time or another, were ranked among the nation’s top 25. While the Vandals didn’t finish with 13 BOWL GAMES the win-loss mark he would have liked, his first class of recruits showed it can provide the base IDAHO for a bright Vandal future. Famous Idaho Potato (2016 season) In that season, Petrino had his first Vandal All-American in Rehkow, whose record-setting season earned him a spot on the Walter Camp All-American team. A true freshman in 2013, Rehkow’s LOUISVILLE average of 47.8 yards per kick is an NCAA record for a freshman as well as the overall record for Motor City (1998 season) a player who punted at least 75 times in one season. He went on to become the only four-time Humanitarian (1999 season) first-team all-conference selection in Vandal history. GMAC (2003 season) In year two of his tenure, Petrino took the Vandals back to the Sun Belt Conference after one Liberty (2004 season) season as an FBS independent. Gator (2005 season) The record didn’t necessarily reflect the strides the Vandals made during Petrino’s second season. Orange (2006 season) A passing game fueled by Linehan, a redshirt freshman at the time, and senior receiver Joshua ILLINOIS McCain was one of the nation’s best and Rehkow again repeated as the national punting average Texas (2010 season) leader and was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award. The Vandals were significantly more competitive Kraft Fight Hunger (2011 season) and off the field they made huge improvements in the classroom. The team posted one of its SOUTHERN MISS. highest grade-point-averages in team history and improved its APR by leaps and bounds. Mobile Alabama (2000 season) Coaching football is in Petrino’s blood. Tagging along with his dad, Bob Petrino, Sr., as he coached Houston (2002 season) the Carroll College (Montana) Saints into national prominence, Petrino knew from the time he was ARKANSAS six years old he wanted to coach. He played for his dad at Carroll and was the Football Gazette Liberty (2009 season) NAIA Division II Player of the Year and a two-time Kodak All-American quarterback after setting 16 school records during a career that included four conference titles and a 36-6 record from UTAH STATE 1985-88. LEADER OF THE PACK: The defensive line is expected to be a major strength for the Vandals this season, led by Aikeem Coleman, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year. Coleman led Idaho last season with eight sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

FAST OUT OF THE GATE: Aikeem Coleman made his presence felt in his Idaho debut. Coleman recorded five quarterback hurries in the 2016 season opener against Montana State (Sept. 1). His five hurries in that game were the most by any Vandal last season and as many as any other Vandal recorded for the entire season.

HITTING HIS STRIDE: Aikeem Coleman stepped up his game midway through the season. Coleman strung together four consecutive games with a sack from Oct. 15-Nov. 12, including multiple sacks in three straight games to start the streak.

BECOMING A TREND: At least one Idaho defensive lineman has been recognized as an all-conference perofrmer each of the last four seasons. Coleman, a second-team choice in 2016 himself, follows in the footsteps of Tueni Lupeamanu, Quinton AIKEEM COLEMAN YEAR-BY-YEAR Bradley and QuayShawne Buckley. No Vandal put a bigger mark on that game than Kaden Elliss. He picked off two passes, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH returning one 31 yards for the first score of the game.

PURE FOOTBALL PLAYER: Often referred to as the best football player on Idaho’s roster, Kaden Elliss can do it all. As a freshman Elliss ranked second on the team with 83 tackles. In 2016 he honed his pass coverage skills and snagged five interceptions - the most by a linebacker in the country at the FBS level. This season may see Elliss play closer to the line of scrimmage, and could include appearances on offense. In high school, Elliss led Judge Memorial Catholic High School to the Utah 3A state title as quarterback and defensive end.

ALL IN THE FAMILY: Kaden Elliss is joined in the Vandal football program by his father Luther (defensive line coach) and younger brother Christian (freshman linebacker). Kaden is the oldest of 12 children - seven of whom are adopted. Luther is in his first season on the Idaho coaching staff after spending the past two years as the Denver Broncos team chaplain. Luther spent 10 seasons playing in the NFL, including Pro Bowl selections in 1999 and 2000. He was the 20th overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft after an All-American career at Utah.
