Methods: This qualitative, observational study was conducted on November 13-23, 2017 in the disaster area, by using content analysis. Data was collected through experts and focus group interviews with professional and healthcare staff, and policy-makers. Results: Our findings were categorized into 7 major groups; environmental health; mental health; mothers, in- fants and children’s health; field hospital; nutrition; contagious diseases; drug delivery. There were good coopera- tion and coordination regarding environmental health issues. However, other categories were handled by differ- ent organizations and resulted in a chaotic situation. Conclusion: The post-earthquake period is overwhelmed with considerable issues regarding the care of victims and therapeutic measures. -
Exploring Non-Binary Genders
Exploring Non-binary Genders: Language and Identity Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the award of Doctor in Philosophy Sebastian Cordoba De Montfort University January 2020 2 Acknowledgments Writing this thesis has been one of the most difficult tasks I have ever undertaken. It has been, in many ways, both a painful and exhilarating experience that can only be described as an emotional rollercoaster. I would have never been able to complete this thesis without the help of some wonderful people, all of whom I would like to thank here: First of all, I would like to thank my partner – and soon-to-be-husband – Cooper Gatewood. Throughout this process, he has seen me experience every emotion, every feeling, and every possible mood. He has not only supported me emotionally, but also intellectually – through his amazing proofreading skills and willingness to listen to my random (insightful?) midnight thoughts. I could not have finished this thesis without you. I love you. I am eternally grateful to my first supervisor, Dr Zowie Davy, who has not only expanded my knowledge in the subject area of trans studies, but has also mentored me in publishing, public speaking, and writing. I am also thankful for her honest, vibrant, and rich feedback throughout the duration of this project. I have enjoyed working together, and I am proud to have had Dr Zowie Davy as my supervisor. I would also like to thank my second supervisor, Prof Brian Brown, whose insight and stimulating comments enriched my thesis and brought the analysis to a higher level. I would also like to thank my examiners, Dr Meg-John Barker and Dr Iain Williamson, as well as Professor Julie Fish (who chaired the session), for their commitment to ensuring my viva experience was not only intellectually stimulating and lively, but also fair, ethical, consensual, and compassionate, particularly amid the covid- 19 epidemic. -
Beyond Binary: Genderqueer As Critical Gender Kind
Beyond Binary: Genderqueer as Critical Gender Kind Robin Dembroff (Yale University) \When gender is a binary, it's a battlefield. When you get rid of the binary, gender becomes a playground." | Kate Bornstein We want to know what gender is. But metaphysical approaches to this question solely have focused on the binary gender kinds men and women. By overlooking those who identify outside of the binary{the group I call `genderqueer'{we are left without tools for understand- ing these new and quickly growing gender identifications. This meta- physical gap in turn creates a conceptual lacuna that contributes to systematic misunderstanding of genderqueer persons. In this paper, I argue that to better understand genderqueer identities, we must recognize a new type of gender kind: critical gender kinds, or kinds whose members resist dominant gender ideology. After developing a model of critical gender kinds, I suggest that genderqueer is best modeled as one such kind. In particular, I propose that its mem- bers are united by resisting `the binary assumption', or the prevalent assumption that they must comply with binary gender classification. 1 Introduction Dissatisfaction with strict binary gender systems is nothing new.Nor is the cre- ation of language, modes of expression, and body modifications aimed at trans- gressing this binary. What is new, however, are widespread and legitimized conversations surrounding this dissatisfaction.1 Just in the last ten years, web searches for `genderqueer' and `nonbinary' have grown by a magnitude of at least ten times.2 Merriam-Webster's dictionary added both terms, the Asso- ciated Press Stylebook embraces `they' as a singular gender-neutral pronoun, and highly visible popular publications such as Teen Vogue and The New York Times have run articles exploring the concept of identifying outside the gender 1See, e.g., White et al (2018, 244) for empirical evidence supporting this claim. -

Seismic Ratings for Degrading Structural Systems
70 Bulletin of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering, Vol. 53, No. 2, June 2020 SEISMIC PERFORMANCE OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS IN 2017 EZGELEH EARTHQUAKE, IRAN Mehdi Kahrizi1 and Mehrzad TahamouliRoudsari2 (Submitted May 2018; Reviewed September 2018; Accepted November 2019) ABSTRACT Due to the high number of students and the possibility of a high death toll during an earthquake, school buildings are considered as highly important structures in most of today’s seismic codes. The constituents of the structures of these buildings including the load bearing walls and the steel/ concrete components have to be designed so that they are at least capable of life-safety structural performance in the face of strong earthquakes. Meanwhile, due to their significant effects on the response of the structure, the performance of load-bearing and infill walls is particularly important. Observations from educational facilities after the Ezgeleh earthquake of November 12th, 2017 have revealed that the school buildings with unconfined load- bearing wall structural system located in near and far fields of the earthquake have sustained the highest level of damage. Schools with steel and reinforced concrete (RC) structural systems have fared much better in terms of seismic performance and damage. In this study, in addition to the specifications of the 2017 Ezgeleh earthquake, the structural systems and the infill walls used in the educational facilities in the earthquake – affected areas are introduced. Then, the performances of different school buildings with varying structural systems located in the far and near fields of the earthquake were investigated. The results obtained from field observations have been summed up and presented. -
