For the full text of this licence, please go to: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/ Rugby Union Men: Body Concerns by Natalie Darko Doctoral Thesis Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of PhD Doctoral Thesis of Loughborough University (July 2012) Natalie Darko 1 Abstract Existing research shows that increasing numbers of young men are dissatisfied with the appearance of their bodies. Drummond (2002a; 2005; 2010) has found that men will use sport and health-related sports acts to conceal these concerns from others. Accordingly, men’s body dissatisfactions are documented less frequently because the practices drawn upon to conceal them are perceived as routine forms of masculine behaviour. Rugby union is one of the most popular sports played by young men in England. Historically, the male rugby player is culturally perceived as strong, tough and unemotionally articulate. Existing research draws attention to health issues, such as performance stress and injury that arise through participation in this sport. Research also shows that rugby union players are likely to experience concerns about gaining weight, yet these are disguised within the requirements of training for the sport. Although, there are studies that examine the constitution of masculinities, the experience of pain and injury and career transitions among rugby union players there are no studies, as yet, that examine how rugby union men experience body concerns and manage these experiences through their sport. -

Introduction In this project, I am going to either prove or disprove two hypotheses: • firstly, that the position of a rugby player will make a difference to what they think a great captain is; and • secondly, that for a captain to be great, they do not have to be the best in their position. I will prove or disprove these hypotheses through the following research: • conducting semi-quantitative surveys • reading and analysing 4 great rugby captains’ autobiographies (qualitative research) and their views on leadership and captaincy • and finally wider online research. Rugby is a sport and subject that I am very passionate about, and I aspire to play at the highest level. Currently I play for Hampton U13 Bs and my club (Twickenham) first team. I find captaincy interesting as I think it takes great skill and certain characteristics to be a good captain let alone a country-leading world-famous great captain. My personal experiences of rugby captaincy have been periodically with my school team and regularly for my club. My personal view of rugby captaincy based on my experiences is that you need to be the hardest-working player on the pitch at all times – you may not be the most skilled, but you can be the hardest-working, and respect from your team- mates and from your coaches comes from this work ethic. -

Jul 29, 2013 00:00 BST BT Sport announces partnership with Scottish Rugby BT Sport will feature as the shirt sponsor for both Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby as part of a four-year sponsorship deal with Scottish Rugby. The new sports channels’ distinctive logo will be displayed on the front of both clubs’ shirts as they compete in the RaboDirect PRO12 and Heineken Cup. This new landmark partnership with BT will see BT Group and BT Sport promoted at Scotstoun Stadium and Murrayfield Stadium. The innovative new partnership will commence from August and runs until 2017. This season, Glasgow Warriors start their Heineken Cup campaign with a tough away draw against defending champions Toulon, while Edinburgh Rugby will play at Murrayfield as they take on Munster Rugby. Marc Watson, chief executive of TV for BT Retail, said: “We are very pleased to invest in Scottish Rugby with this sponsorship, which allows BT and BT Sport to demonstrate a commitment to supporting the game north of the border. This is part of our long term commitment to rugby, where we see great growth potential in the coming years. “BT Sport will be the home of the Aviva Premiership, showing all 69 live games and live action from the JP Morgan Sevens. Dallaglio, less than 72 hours retired, was back at Twickenham yesterday lending his support for a special charity game at HQ on Sept 20 in aid of the injured and maimed British Servicemen who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan in disturbing numbers. Initially pencilled in as non- playing captain and recruitment officer for the Help the Heroes XV, Dallaglio was on top table when his opposition non-playing captain Scott Gibbs, a firm friend from Lions days and Heroes: Scott Gibbs with Trooper Adam looking fit after recently Cocks, who was injured in Afghanistan and Lawrence Dallaglio training for a marathon, suddenly declared his intention of playing as well. The gauntlet having been thrown down, Dallaglio immediately offered his playing services to Phil de Glanville who will manage the Heroes XV. RFU Council Notes November 2018
MIDDLESEX NOTES ON THE RFU COUNCIL MEETING Held at Twickenham - 23rd November 2018 The meeting was chaired by the President, Chris Kelly. The meeting commenced with a period of silence in memory of Peter Baines (RFU President in 2016/17 and Council Representative for Hertfordshire from 2002 to 2014) who passed away recently. 1. PRESIDENT’S INTRODUCTION Chris Kelly - President 1.1 Chris Kelly paid tribute to CEO Stephen Brown who recently announced that he would be leaving the RFU at Christmas after seven-years’ service as CFO, CEO of RWC2015 and CEO. 1.2 Following Stephen Brown’s departure, Nigel Melville will become Interim CEO. 1.3 The recruitment process for a new CEO has commenced. 2. FRANCIS BARON & GRAEME CATTERMOLE Chris Kelly - President 2.1 Council debated the reporting in the press of a report into the RFU’ s finances that had been written by former RFU CEO Francis Baron. 2.2 Andy Cosslett informed the meeting that he and Helen Weir (as Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee) had met Francis Baron on two occasions to discuss his report, advise him of errors in the report and update him on the enhanced financial controls that had been introduced since his tenure as CEO. 2.3 Andy Cosslett stated that it was the responsibility of the Independent Non-Executives to make themselves available to stakeholders to consider and address any concerns that they may have, and it was in this context that the meetings with Francis Baron were held. 2.4 In spite of these meetings, Francis Baron and former RFU Chairman, Graeme Cattermole (whom Andy Cosslett also met) contacted the media and this resulted in their criticisms of the RFU being widely quoted in the national press.
