Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

Cardinal Tobin recently sent us a letter concerning the approval of three documents by the bishops of the United States at their meeting last month related to reporting and investigating claims of abuse or the intentional mishandling of these cases by bishops. You can find the actual text of these three documents as well as a video by the Cardinal on the website of the Archdiocese (www.rcan.org).

1. “Protocol Regarding Available Non-Penal Restrictions on Bishops,” deals with bishops who were removed from office or resigned their office for reason of sexual abuse or the intentional mishandling of accusations—otherwise called “cover-up.” While the pope alone has the power in the Church to punish a bishop, as he did recently with Theodore McCarrick and others, the document provides guidance on bishops who resigned or were removed for reasons related to sexual abuse or abuse of power, but not convicted of a canonical crime. Such a bishop may be restricted in his ministry, forbidden to speak or act on behalf of his former diocese and not invited to the meetings of the national conference of bishops. 2. “Affirming Our Episcopal Commitments,” prepared by a committee of bishops which Cardinal Tobin chairs, reaffirms the commitments that all bishops made on the day of their ordination to live according to the Gospel and carry out the responsibilities to shepherd the people of God. They place themselves under the same high standard applied to priests, deacons and lay leaders. 3. “Directive for the Implementation of the Provision of ‘Vos Estis Lux Mundi’ Concerning Bishops and their Equivalents,” deals specifically with the reporting and investigations of certain complaints against bishops. This document detailed some specific ways that the Catholic Church in this country will implement a universal law enacted by Pope Francis on May 9 of this year, a collection of norms entitled “Vos Estis Lux Mundi” or “You Are the Light of the World.” This initiative by Pope Francis established new procedures to combat sexual abuse and to assure that bishops and religious superiors are held accountable for their actions.

Some further clarifying explanations will appear in next week’s bulletin. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings

Robert Fulghum tells the story of a troubled man who paid a visit to his rabbi. He had experienced a great deal of failure in his life and didn’t feel that he had what it takes to accomplish his dreams. After listening to the man’s tale of woe, the rabbi instructed him to seek out page thirty of the New York Times Almanac. That would be of help.

Following that instruction, he found that the almanac entry was a list of the top hitters in the annals of baseball, with Ty Cobb leading the pack with a .376 batting average. Puzzled as to how that applied to his problem, he returned to the rabbi for an explanation. The rabbi explained that that page of Hall of Fame hitters represented people who in essence failed about seven out of every ten times at bat.

So if he thought his track record of failure was a problem, he needed to think again. The many failures put him in league with some of the greatest hitters baseball had ever known.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“He said to them, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few..’” Luke 10:2

As Catholics we are all called to serve. However, many of us are unsure of what our charisms or gifts from the Holy Spirit are to help build God’s Church. Through prayer we are able to discern how God is calling us. The next time your pastor or fellow parishioner asks you to join a committee, ask God first, if that is what He wants you to do with your gifts.

Our Sunday Offering: June 2, 2019 - $18,838.35 June 3, 2018—$17,481.50

Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal Pledged: $81,241.00 which is 78.7% of our goal of $103,179.00

Please consider making a pledge or one-time gift to help us reach or surpass our goal! The Appeal helps so many people in need, and provides important services to our parish and school! It also provides resources for the offices of Pastoral Ministry with the Deaf and with Persons with Disabilities. With your support, the Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal can help the many they serve in our Archdiocese.
