Presidents Report

G'day Members ,

Well here we go again for another year with the AGM done and dusted , and has seen some new faces come onto the Management Committee to take on the task of continuing to move our club forward into the future . Craig Green has come on board as our new Vice President, and Faye Goodman was installed into the casual vacancy of Editor at the last committee meeting . I'd personally like to thank Faye for volunteering for this challenging role and would ask for all members to please let Faye settle into her new role. I look forward to Faye putting her own stamp on the magazine .

We are once again placing a Club Display at the Mingara 4wd and Camping Show on 25-27 September 2015 , and we are in need of club members volunteering some time manning the display and selling Raffle tickets for our yearly fundraising event Over that weekend. Kerrie Carlin is once again organising the club display , and has certainly excelled herself with the prizes for the raffle , racking up a total of $4400.00 worth of quality items donated. So if you can spare some time, please ring or see Kerrie at the September meeting.

The club’s main event, the Xmas party will be held on 28 November 2015, and all information and attend- ance forms will be in this magazine. You have till the end of October to submit these forms for catering and for the ordering of the kids gifts. Once again, we will have the pleasure of the Dungog Rural Fire Service attending the event to help with the water slide and Santa .

This year will see the clubs 40th anniversary , and this will occur around June / July. All suggestions from members on how to celebrate this milestone will be considered by the committee with the aim being to once again give as much as we can back to you, the members So please put your suggestions forward .

As we have no Social Co-ordinator yet, it was suggested that we have a social committee to organise the Xmas Party and the clubs 40th Anniverary . If you have any desire to be part of this committee, please con- tact or see Jo Kelly at the September meeting .

I look forward to representing you all for another year as president with the aim to continue to move this great club in positive directions with the help of this fantastic committee. I will be making a concerted effort to make it out on some trips this year, and look forward to catching up with as many members as possible.

Shane Brodbeck PAR ONERI President ( equal to the task )

Editorial

Welcome to my first attempt at producing the club magazine. I have really enjoyed putting your magazine together and look forward to working with you all over the next twelve months. Thank you to all who have contributed trip reports and photographs . My thanks also to Brian Ick for your commitment to the club magazine over the past few years and for your support and advice in handing over your knowledge to me. This month was an exciting one for the club with an enthusiastic new committee taking up their roles and a variety of trips to suit all tastes. With the spring and summer approaching now is the time to get out in the bush, drive some tracks and enjoy the great camaraderie around an evening campfire that our club is famous for. Cheers, Faye Goodman Editor

When visiting We-Leaser, remember to take your rubbish with you. The drums in the café are not for rubbish but for a small fire on a cool night. It’s a great place to visit and we want it kept clean and tidy for all members to enjoy. If you have any issues at We-Leaser, please call Paul Kelly, Lease Manager 0408 433 790 Our annual Xmas in July in The Watagans provided another great weekend of fun, frivolity and fine four wheel driving. There were a number of trips on Saturday morning, ranging from scenic to challenging. In the afternoon the party got under way with a game of golf and some hilarious sumo wrestling, followed by happy hour around the massive fire. A baked dinner of spit roast pork and beef with vegetables was provided by a team of willing workers. After dinner a few drinks were enjoyed that resulted in a couple of wobbly boots and a few headaches. Another great event that really showcased the spirit of this club with volunteers workings for several days before -hand. Thanks to Peter “Chilly” Chilvers for another sterling effort in organising and working so hard to ensure the success of this “outstonishing” event.

Forest to Lakes

8th 9th August 2015

Trip Leaders: Clarissa Bright, Glenn McCreadie. This trip started for us on the Friday, we had an easy drive up through Dungog and stopped in at the local IGA, they have the best selection of organic wines in there, then on to Gloucester and down the Thunderbolts Way (gorgeous scenery) to Krambach where we stayed the night in a B&B at a horse farm, a great feed at the pub and a comfy bed. With farm fresh eggs for breakfast to fuel us we had an easy run into Nabiac to meet the rest of the crew. We’d agreed to be tail end Charlie for this trip so making sure everyone was heading north out of Nabiac we pulled on to the highway for the short run up to this track Glenn and Clarissa had been exploring earli- er in the year. Our leaders lead us in what appeared to be a clock wise circle; there was plenty of radio banter about the déjà vu track but our leaders came good and we ended up at a lookout with spectacular 360’ views over the Talawahl and Kiwarrak State Forest and north and south along the coast, if you’ve been on T.C & Faye’s trip to Swans Crossing you’ll know Middle Brother, we could see it way in the distance north of us. After leaving the lookout we wound our way through some inter- esting tracks, not too hard, but enough to keep you alert, well I wasn’t paying too much attention and managed to get the FJ hung up on a rock, c’mon we’re all only ever between one rescue and the next. Thanks go out to Mark and Liz in the massive Troopy for the pull, in fact I reckon it was watching the roof top tent on the Troopy brushing all the tree branches rather than the track which got us onto the rock, never mind, the FJ is christened. Winding our way gradually south back towards Nabiac we came across a tree blocking the track, it wasn’t a big tree, just lots of it, anyhow the guys between them had 14”, 16” and even a rumoured 18”. Chainsaws people chainsaws, whatever; with a couple cutting and the rest hauling the branches away it took 20 minutes to clear enough height to get Mark’s Troopy through. Onwards, well for about a kilometre anyway, there were more saplings across the road, we cleared these only to find a gate blocking our way further on, remember this gate it crops up later. The convoy turned around and we were now in the lead, retracing out steps we passed the bottom of the track where we’d cleared the original blockage when bugger me “Road Closed” signs lying sprawled on the ground, which way, which way is closed, was it the tree we cleared, was it the gate closed, is it something further up the track? Keep going forward is a good plan, another couple of kms up and another blockage but we reckon we can sneak past this, a quick discussion has Monica and I heading off to find where this track heads, wahoo! About five kms up the track we pop out on the old Pacific Highway, a call on the radio to confirm the track and we’re told everyone is also past the blockage, great news, we regroup at the old highway.

A short haul on the tarmac and across the highway has us on the road to and camp, the camp ground at Violet hill is big enough for a group twice our size, it has a good loo block and plenty of fire pits, it’s right on the lakeside and a beautiful place to spend a few days. As you would ex- pect, happy hour ensued and a fire was made, how easy is it to get every truck to bring a bag of fire wood on a trip, you get a great fire and no hassle of trying to find scarce good burning timber, a great idea I reckon. Sunday morning was a lazy pack up, with enough time for Glenn to get his Drone out and fly it around the campground; there were a lot of interested big kids, mmm! Dear Santa... Leaving camp we headed over to see the biggest tree in NSW, “The Grandis” is a 400 year old Flooded Gum Tree (Eucalyptus grandis), it’s worth a visit, you’ve got to admire something that’s lived 400 years. Oh! The gate, remember the gate from earlier on, it was here at the other end of the car park at “The Grandis”, we were so close, and a lot of hassle for a gate, who knows what criteria is used to determine where a gate gets put in, I couldn’t see why it was there. Our next adventure was a run down the beach, to get to the coast road you have to use a ferry, luckily there is one at Bombah Point, there is a fee as its run by the National Parks and not RMS, there is also a cafe at the ferry point so we had morning tea here. Beach driving, I will admit it’s not my idea of fun but never having taken the FJ Cruiser on the sand before I was keen to see how it would perform, we aired down to 14psi and; well let’s just say two Nissans and one Toyota got stuck, it wasn’t our Toyota. To be fair the sand was pretty soft, shovels and Maxtrax were put to good use and all three trucks were rescued safely, well done everyone that training was put to good use. The FJ performed well on the beach, it’s fairly light weight and has plenty of power in the 4ltr V6 and I reckon the auto box helps too. Coming off the beach we aired up and drove into Tea Gardens, here we parked on the wharf front and had a fish and chip lunch, (I won’t mention the ice cream) and said our goodbyes. We’d like to thank Clarissa and Glenn for a thoroughly entertaining weekend (the radio banter, you had to be there) and a very well planned trip, we were supplied trip notes beforehand which were useful; we’re looking forward to more of your trips guys. A big thanks as always to everyone who came along, this club has some great members who are real easy to travel with, it was especially good to see newer members along, and to see TC and Faye chillin’ out on someone else’s trip. Thank you one and all. Bob Montgomery, Monica Porteous

The team consisted of: TC in the Challenger (Trip Leader); The Wallace’s in the Patrol; The Murray’s in the Pajero; Steve and Anne in the Prado; Scott in the Colorado; Bev in her Prado (Tail End) and Myself in the LandCruiser 80.

We met up at South service centre Miccy D’s on Saturday (August 22nd) for a 9am start. Some had left at ridiculous o’clock earlier that morning. I travelled up Friday evening and found a nice little bush camp site the night before so was able to have a little sleep-in yet was still one of the last to arrive. After the obligatory sign-on and coffee, for most, we headed to our vehicles and made the short journey to Coopernook H.Q. Camp ground (about 25 minutes away) where we set up the tents and camper trail- ers. The camp site was quite level and had a good covering of grass over most of the area. There were a few campers already in the site with varying set-ups. After we were all sorted the word was sent around that it was time to air-down and get exploring. The remainder of the day was set for finding look outs, chewing on the unrelenting dust and taking some pics of the beautiful surrounds. Although the very recent, some still current, hazard reduction burns had left a smoke haze as a permanent feature of most of the images that would be taken over the weekend.

Saturday was all about forestry roads, in fairly good condition, linking up a number of wonderful vistas and a visit to Waitui Falls.

Brian (CC4WDC member) came over to the fire circle and shared with us a few stories of the happenings of the campground during the previous evenings - domes- tics, threats of knife violence and a couple of visits from the boys and girls in blue. After a great day, good feed, some stories and a couple of cold beverages we retired for the evening.

Sunday morning was the time assigned for some real 4wding. We hit a power line track first up that looks suspiciously like it might be getting ready for closure - TC mentioned that we may be some of the last people to be able to traverse that nice little climb. Once we reached the top there was a lovely little overgrown and very green twisty track that had a log placed across it in a couple of places. The logs eventually caused the party to have to find a space to turn around and re-trace our steps back through the jungle track and then down the power line track. After a short traverse TC pointed us towards another hill climb. TC took off up the hill, with us waiting patiently at the bottom, to ascertain if the track was still open. As we waited to hear if he was able to make it we all aired down a little more. The call finally came through letting us know that the track was open and that the Challenger had successfully traversed to the top. One by one we all overcame the challenge of that hill - all scrabbly loose rocks and quite steep in sections. The journey back to camp saw us all put a little more air back in the tyres and me discover that my compressor had decided to not function anymore - all sorted with some air from Scott and David - Cheers! Once back at camp those that needed to still pack-up got underway whilst the rest of us just hung around and watched. We were all done by early afternoon and after the many words of thanks to TC for the weekend then the road trip back to reality began. A couple of vehicles called back in to the Micky D’s at Taree on the return journey whilst the remainder headed down the highway towards natures car wash. By the time I arrived home just about all the dust had been washed off. I would like to thank TC and Bev for their research into the trip and for ensuring we all made it back safely. Cheers! Saturday morning started as a cool Winters day. The sun was shining and forecast was for a fine and warm day. Just a great way to start a day trip up in the mountains. A quick trip to North Entrance to pick two more of my grand kids, then plotting a course west to our meeting place, of Yarramalong. I was trying to get to the meeting point well before the scheduled time, but my GPS estimated us getting there at 8.26am. Turning up at close the starting time, I announced my arrival with, ’Am I the last one here?’ The look on some of the faces already answered that, so I just volunteered to do the trip report. That seemed to put a sigh of relief on some of the faces. There were some regular faces I have started to know as I have been on a few trips now and getting to know the faces and remembering everyone’s names. We had a new crew of Grant and Melinda, with their young kids, Bonnie and Samuel. Grant stood proudly wearing his Manly T shirt and I knew I was amongst friends. Barry then briefed us all about the days touring and then time to move on, west out of Yarramalong. Up through the Yarramalong Valley and through Cedar Brush Creek. A turn off at Murray’s Run Road had us on a short 7km trip to the bottom of the valley. An electronic warning sign, advising of the Bridge Out 7km further on. We followed the leader, thinking he may know an alternative route, but as luck had it, we had to turn back and I couldn’t resist the temptation of taking a photo of the sign. Fairly small sign, one of those signs if you blink, you miss it ! Barry and Joyce had us on a new path and through some beautiful scenic mountain roads. The wattle all seemed to be in full bloom now and some stretches of roadway had brilliant yellow flowering trees on both sides of the roadway, letting us know now that spring is just around the corner. We stopped at Finchley’s lookout and walked the short distance up the stairs to the lookout platform. Magnificent view out to the west, with the Great Dividing Range seen in the distance. Couple of mandato- ry photo’s and then back on board out vehicles for a morning tea spot at Finchley’s Campground. Time for a cuppa and biscuit and a chat. I took my grandkids to the nearby rock carvings and a tour group was be- ing given a story relating to the rock carvings by a guide. We returned back to campground as everyone was ready to move on.

Our trip then made our way down along Yengo Creek Road which included some small creek crossings, just enough to make a bit of splash and to add a bit of adventure to the trip. I managed to get a couple of photo’s of Grant and Melinda’s Hi Lux as they were travelling in front of me, causing a spray of water to burst out from either side of their truck. Arriving in Wollombi a short time later, we stopped at the park for lunch. The kids all were able to release a bit of energy on the play equipment there. Temperatures had peaked at 27 degrees and the day’s weather could not have been any better. Even had to put the air-conditioning on for a while. After a bite to eat, it was time to move on. Through the village of Wollombi and out via the Wollombi Road. After travelling through the network of tracks, we made our way to the Yellow Rock Lookout. Magnificent views of the surrounding areas. Ben knew some other tracks nearby that led to more impressive viewing lookouts. A group photo at one of the more spectacular sites showed how high we were above the valley floor below. The last lookout had us looking over the Hunter Valley wine area and a great view looking straight down to the town of Cessnock. We moved on out, down the track and all met up once back on the bitumen. Time to all go our separate ways and to head home after a great day out. I ended up finishing the day with a trip to Macca’s at Cessnock. That was an adventure in itself. Thanks again to Barry and Joyce for organising the day and looking forward to more as the weather warms up.

So the time had come where Lachy said that I had to do my driver training as he was over me running into wattle trees on trips while he was in the passenger’s seat. I would call that skill over bad driving, but anyway, so the Sunday morning began and I had the keys to Lachy’s be- loved Patrol! Mwahaha.

As many of you are aware, this was Bob’s last Driver Training , but that didn’t stop if from be- ing more or less exactly the same as every other one. It began with the classroom situation, our trainers for the day included Bob, Lachy, Tappy, Maria and Narelle.

I had kept quiet for most of the morning, until they asked the question “why should you let the truck cool down for a bit before doing river crossings?” to which I responded quickly without a pause that it was like mums Corning wear, that you don’t take it straight out of the oven into the fridge or freezer otherwise it will crack, Maria and Narelle said that they are going to add that to the slide show. After smoko we went out to look at the trucks and where everything was, I knew were the fridge was with morning tea in it, and then worked everything else out.

Then it came to the driving part... I had the truck to myself, picked my own music, control of the thermostat and the two-way radio. Then came the driving into the quarry, we all did our reverse stall start and felt pretty confident. I followed our little circuit once and I did it, then It came to my second time round. I took the wrong line and went down and took the quick way down the hill… I panicked, and my foot stomped on the break and all I could see was Maria who was guiding me down the hill. “She is going to die” is all I could think to myself she be- come super woman as she flew out of the way. I had a bit of a moment, but it was okay the girls came over to me and reassured me that everyone was okay and encouraged me to get back n the driver seat.

The day carried on, and both I and the Patrol managed to do all the obstacles set before me with ease, including the rock climb, creek circuit and running over the small yellow lily pads. Feeling a lot more confident than I had 4 hours ago, we finished the day by driving down an optional hill whilst watching a Jeep get towed out on a trailer. After this we all aired up, and said our good byes. Many thanks to all of the trainers who came out to help us, and also to all of the other attendees for making it a great day!!!
