List of DirecTV channels (United States) Below is a numerical representation of the current DirecTV national channel lineup in the United States. Some channels have both east and west feeds, airing the same programming with a three-hour delay on the latter feed, creating a backup for those who missed their shows. The three-hour delay also represents the time zone difference between Eastern (UTC -5/-4) and Pacific (UTC -8/-7). All channels are the East Coast feed if not specified. High definition Most high-definition (HDTV) and foreign-language channels may require a certain satellite dish or set-top box. Additionally, the same channel number is listed for both the standard-definition (SD) channel and the high-definition (HD) channel, such as 202 for both CNN and CNN HD. DirecTV HD receivers can tune to each channel separately. This is required since programming may be different on the SD and HD versions of the channels; while at times the programming may be simulcast with the same programming on both SD and HD channels. Part time regional sports networks and out of market sports packages will be listed as ###-1. Older MPEG-2 HD receivers will no longer receive the HD programming. Special channels In addition to the channels listed below, DirecTV occasionally uses temporary channels for various purposes, such as emergency updates (e.g. Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike information in September 2008, and Hurricane Irene in August 2011), and news of legislation that could affect subscribers. The News Mix channels (102 and 352) have special versions during special events such as the 2008 United States Presidential Election night coverage and during the Inauguration of Barack Obama. -

Roossien Title: Industry vs. Lifestyle: A Sociological Study of Downhill Snow Skiing in North America Supervising Professors: Ben Carrington & Thomas Hunt Since the year 2000, the price of downhill snow skiing has risen nearly 200%. Over the last five years, this price escalation has picked up, and the price of downhill snow skiing has risen 75%. This change is being driven by large snow skiing corporations who have led a movement of commercialization and consolidation in the industry. Vail Resorts is the largest of these corporations, owning over 50% of the $3.2 billion industry. As the major giant of the industry, Vail Resorts has experienced tremendous financial success as a result of snow skiing’s recent corporatization. However, this corporatization is leading to the severe marginalization and destruction of snow skiing subculture. Due to downhill snow skiing’s foundational dependence on its rich and distinct subculture, this cultural destruction is causing a deterioration of the sport itself. This thesis engages in a sociological study of the modern downhill snow skiing industry, examining issues of lifestyle sport culture, social power, corporate strategy, and cultural impact. The research exhibited herein consolidates the fragmented bodies of lifestyle sport and snow skiing literature, and draws on primary interviews and observational data. -

Widespread content digitization could increase retrans negotiation leverage for content distributors such as cable ops, said Sanford Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett . With broadcast content all over the Web, and with additional proliferation expected, Moffett on Wed told NATPE attendees in Vegas that CBS et al could soon face problems trying to extract large sums of money from cable ops because so much of that content is free online. “It will be fascinating to see how those conversations play out,” he said. Panelists said this issue is a hot topic on Wall Street too, as online content is “teaching people to devalue content that costs millions of dollars to produce,” said Bear Stearns analyst Spencer Wang . Panelists also noted how short-term driven Wall St is—a fact certainly not lost on cable these days. In another panel, Michael Eisner , founder of media/entertainment investment firm The Tornante Co (and former Disney chief), argued that online video “will be the primary source of funded scripted TV” at some point. But he said production costs and salaries will be lower, so execs should find “new people who aren’t spoiled” by the traditional media biz. -- NATPE Notebook: Intuitive use is the imperative of today’s electronic sell-through plays, panelists said, irrespective of platform or business model. “If you make media truly easy… users will respond,” said Hulu CEO Jason Kilar . -

The program—already available in Kansas City—gives customers a 2-year offer locked in at a specific price. And while price hikes could occur during the period, they would be built into the plan and disclosed upfront to customers who participate. Unlike many DBS offers, the Price Lock is “not a contract” and would therefore appear to allow customers leave without being penalized. A TW spokesman declined to provide further details, but Hobbs described the marketing package as a way to go after DBS subs. “What they want is the certainty,” he said, noting that cable may be moving away from the model of raising rates for video subs on a specific day of the year. “I think that rate increases of old in cable are going the way of the dinosaur,” Hobbs said. He predicted increases will come on anniversary dates of triple-play bundles and similar offers. TW Cable, meanwhile, is “lessening our reliance on rate increases” and will also vary the bundle depending on a market’s competitive set, he said. When digital phone initially launched, it featured unlimited long distance. The MSO later launched unlimited in-state calling to better compete with the Bells. -

Of course, it’s not enough of a present to erase his a la carte, dual must-carry and 30% cable ownership cap proposals. (Now if the FCC had granted the NCTA’s request to delay the integration ban until ops deploy a new downloadable security system or until 2010, Martin may have gotten some cheers from the crowd). The FCC chmn is slated to address attendees at the Las Vegas show’s opening general session today (1pm, Mandalay Bay, Ballroom J). News that Charter’s waiver was granted reached pres/CEO Neal Smit just before he began a 1Q all-employee meeting Fri at the MSO’s St Louis HQ. Charter shares closed up 7% Fri at $3.63. Nearly 300 days after Charter filed its waiver request, the Bureau ruled that it could continue to deploy 7 integrated set-tops after July 1, ’07 because of the finan- cial hardship the ban would create (Charter told the FCC that it has more than $20bln in outstanding debt obligations, which is almost 11 times its annualized EBITDA). Under FCC rules, operators can only deploy set-tops with separable or downloadable security after July 1, ’07. -

Targeting advertising is the “holy grail” for cable, he said. Pressed about the issue later by reporters, Roberts said he didn’t have an answer today on a timeframe for the venture. “The first most important thing is to hire a leader and fill in with the execution plan. It’s been a high priority, and we’re nearing the end of that process,” the Comcast chief said. “I may be a little ahead of myself, but so what. I think it’s an important exciting step.” Last month, Ad Age reported that outgoing Aegis Media Americas CEO David Verklin is expected to lead Project Canoe. Should be interesting since Verklin is slated to speak at Tues’ general advertising session. Another new venture that took center stage during Sun’s session was the WiMax jv led by Sprint and Clearwire ( Comcast , Time Warner Cable and Bright House are investors). Paul Otellini , pres/CEO of Intel (also an investor in the jv), said it will probably be the fastest, nationwide network built first. “This country will finally move from sort of 3rd World position in wireless communications to lead the world,” he said.
