HARK! THE HERALD WADERS SING. NEEDHAM MARKET 0 v BIGGLESWADE TOWN 1 Report by Mike Draxler

Well it is getting close to Christmas, the green army out in force, resplendent in green and white Santa hats, making most of the noise. The football for the first 30 minutes as good as we have seen from a Wader's team, the passing and interplay a joy to watch. Creating chances and I guess a need to learn to take the chances quicker. A rasping shot from Charlie Pattison midway through the half brought out the best from the home keeper, Marcus Garnham, tipping the spinning ball over the bar. Needham had their moments and looked dangerous but the cool guy between the posts Kyle Forster, his positional play exemplary, was a safe pair of hands. Lewis Ferrell has really shown his ability in the back line with a strong performance in this new Biggleswade team. Matt Ball taking the "senior" responsibility he enjoys. At the break on a chilly afternoon 0--0 and all to play for. Out for the second period with the Waders still pressing looking for the elusive break. Needham did not offer too much and with Ferrell, Richardson, Stanley and Panter coping with the occasional attacks it was left to Lucan, Williams and Charles to try to break the deadlock. A Needham free kick just outside the box from Adam Mills was spilled with Craig Parker on hand to put the ball away, disappointment for the home side as the goal was ruled out, offside. As the match drew to a close, what better time to score than 89, a ball slid through by Matt Ball to Dylan Wil- liams who beat the keeper from short range. With 5 added minutes to repair the damage Needham did not increase the threat level and the Waders won out with the single goal, although Trey Charles had a great effort saved deep into injury time which could have doubled the lead. This new Waders team are proving them- selves just a little bit good and not the " no hopers" most in football circles thought they would be.

Mom Lewis Ferrell. History of Alvechurch FC

The earliest mention of a Football Club in Alvechurch dates back to 1913 when a team called Alvechurch Juniors was recorded. By the 1920s, the team were known as Alvechurch Swifts and were playing football on Crown Meadow and using the Red Lion Inn as their headquarters. They were a suc- cessful team winning the Redditch Cup and Shield in 1924. In 1994 a dedicated band of supporters resurrected the club as Alvechurch Villa, rebuilding the seated stand and refurbishing the clubhouse to gain ad- mission to the Midland Combination Premier Division, finishing in fifth posi- tion in the league and beaten finalists in the Smedley Crook Cup. The team went onto reach the League Cup Final the following season, only to lose out to League Champions Bloxwich Town. In 1996 the club reverted back to its original name and became simply, Al- vechurch F.C.

2017/18 saw the club promoted to the Division One South and achieve back to back promotions, finishing runners up to Basford United and gaining promotion to Step 3 at the first attempt. 2018/19 with the re-organisation of Non-league at steps 3-4, the club com- peted in the new Southern League Premier Division Central. After finishing 4th, they beat Stourbridge 2-1 in the play-off semi-final, before losing to Kings Lynn Town 3-0 in the final. They also beat Redditch United pre-season, to claim the Worcester Senior Cup for the first time since 1977. 2019/20 unfortunately, as a result of the success the club has achieved over the last 4 years under Ian Longs reign, and Stourbridge losing their manager following the play off semi-final defeat, our management team decided to move to the Glassboys, taking the majority of the squad with them. Church started the new season under new manager and ex Aston Villa, Walsall play- er, Darren Byfield, but after a poor start which saw only 3 wins from 15 games and going out of all cups at the first hurdle, Church parted ways with Darren. Currently, Academy manager and club director Dean Holtham is helping manage the team, along with former manager and director, Simon Redhead, to start a new chapter in this club’s wonderful history. 1874 - 1954 - the First 80 Years Biggleswade Town were originally formed as Biggleswade F.C. in 1874 and began by playing friendlies. They became one of the founder members of the Biggleswade and District League in 1902/03 and won the championship at the first attempt. The successful season was climaxed by winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup - the first of eight victories so far in the competition. The ‘Waders’, as the club are known, first entered the FA Cup in 1904.

2008 - Chris Nunn became manager in Nov 06 after a very poor start to the season saw the team heading for certain relegation. In Feb 07 the team had made up a lot of points but were still bottom of the Premier table. The team avoided relegation on the last league day of the season. The winning of the NBC Cup in the very last match of the campaign rein- forced that optimism. The 2007/08 season saw the squad develop further with new signings and for the first time in 15 years the club found itself top of the division at one point. A final position of 3rd was a result of hard work and changes gradually moving the club forward. As the 2008/09 season beckoned, the new Stadium was ready for occupation and the seasons in the 'wilderness of ground sharing' were over. For the first time in the clubs 134-year history, it finally had a home of its very own.

2008 – 2009 - Moving into the new ground certainly created a great feeling at the Club and new faces began to appear on the playing side as well as behind the scenes. As the final whistle blew on the last friendly there was a definite feeling of readiness for the forthcom- ing season. The Wader’s first season (2009-10) at Step Four proved a tough start but gradually the team strengthened and finished in a comfortable twelfth place with the team taking points off every side that season except Bury Town and Hitchin Town who finished first and second respectively.

2010-2011 - This season saw the Waders climb to their highest ever position in the football pyramid, finally finishing in 4th place and with the resultant position in the playoffs. Waders travelled to 3rd place Daventry Town, a team they had previously beaten both home and away in the regular season. Football being football, Daventry ran out easy winners ending Waders hopes of promotion.

2011-2012 - This season saw the Waders fade as season progressed. Having topped the league early in the season, injuries and suspensions took its toll and the season finished with a top half finish just outside the play offs.

2012-2013 - Winning the 2012/13 Playoff final secured a place in the Southern League Premier, was upstaged by the best ever season in the club’s 140-year history, finishing 9th in our first Premier season, reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup losing to a well organised Stourbridge side. Season ended with Waders beating Luton Town at Luton to lift HISTORY OF BIGGLESWADE TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

2013-2014 - First season ever at step three and the Waders feel they have arrived. Finishing a creditable 9th in the table and reaching the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in the club’s history put the club in the record books. The Waders were the draw specialist of the premier division and had they converted the drawn games to winning ones, they would have finished in the play-off positions. Winning the Beds Senior Cup for the second succes- sive season was the icing on the cake.

2014-2015 - This season was a real test for the Waders, with injuries both on and off the field. Long term injuries meant bringing in loan players and they all played their part.

2015-2016 - A difficult season for the Waders, Southern League gets harder every season, an injection of new players helped steer the ship.

2016-2017 - Having established their premier status the Waders went on to achieve their highest points total and finished just outside the play-offs in a creditable 7th position

2017-2018 - Tough season with the club suffering a number of significant injuries ended with a Mid Table finish and a narrow loss to Luton Town in the Beds Senior Cup Final.

2018-2019 - A successful first season for new manager Lee Allinson and his new squad. Winners of the Beds senior cup. 7th in the Southern league central premier division, nar- rowly missing a play-off place. Reached the 2nd round qualifying of the FA trophy only just beaten 1-0 away to conference side AFC Fylde. LATEST LEAGUE TABLE - For the latest updates visit the league
