[email protected] Facility Guide Community Services Master Plan Update Completed

The City recently completed an update to the Community Ser- vices Master Plan. The plan will guide recreation programming and the delivery of community services in La Mirada over the next five to ten years. The Master Plan Update marks a number of achievements that have occurred since 2004, when the original Community Services Master Plan was first approved, such as the completion of Splash!, the Civic Center renovation and addition of the Resource Center elevator. The Plan also addresses the City’s response to fiscal chal- lenges created by the Great Recession and efforts to improve cost recovery of programs. It also identifies opportunities to enhance the community’s recreation and service needs. “The Community Services Department is responsible for a vari- ety of services to meet the community’s cultural, recreational, and social needs,” says Community Services Director Lori Thompson. “The updated Community Services Master Plan will help guide the delivery of high quality programs and services to the community.” The Master Plan Update identifies several goals to serve as the framework for the Community Services Department, along with specific strategies for achieving each goal. Goals and strategies aim to further enhance the high quality of community services programs offered by the City through continued evaluation of recreational programing, ensuring timely customer service, further reducing ex- penditures through increased cost recovery, and providing enriching experiences for residents of all ages. Goals and strategies were identified through a number of sourc- es, including community feedback gathered through surveys and focus groups, the Community Services Commission, current rec- reation trends, and general recommendations from the California Parks and Recreation Society, and the National Recreation and Park Association.

Imperial Highway Median Project Underway

Roadway and landscape improvements on Imperial Highway have begun. The project extends from Santa Fe Springs to the Orange County border. Improvements include sidewalk, curb and gutter replacement, street rehabilitation, new median construction, landscaping, and traf- fic signal upgrades. “The Imperial Highway Median Project will enhance traffic cir- culation, safety, and aesthetics along one of La Mirada’s most heav- ily traveled thoroughfares,” says Public Works Manager Gary Sanui. “Landscaping will be similar to the Imperial Highway median between La Mirada Boulevard and Santa Gertrudes Avenue, which was complet- ed a few years ago.” The improvements are a cooperative project between the County of , and the Cities of La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs, with most of the funding provided through a federal grant. Construction is expected to be completed by fall. 3 “4 La Mirada Kids” Easter Egg Hunt Carnival Pre-sale Tickets April 19

La Mirada Remains Among Region’s Safest Cities During the past year, the City of La Mirada experienced one of the region’s lowest crime rates and remained one of the safest cities in Los Angeles County. The City’s low crime rate is attributable to a strong partnership between residents, businesses and the Public Safety Team. This partnership fosters a well-coordinated team ap- proach to fighting crime. According to a recent crime analysis of surrounding communities in southeast Los Angeles and northern Orange County, La Mirada experienced the lowest number of major crimes last year. This is consistent with recent years, as major crimes have decreased by 34 percent in La Mirada over the past ten years. Overall, there were 905 Part 1 crimes reported in La Mirada in 2013. Part 1 crimes include murder, larceny, burglary, automobile Sheriff’s Deputy theft, robbery, assault, and arson.
