The book is divided in 10 chapters, covering subjects like 9 tattvas, 6 , reincarnation, Indriyas and Mann, nature of universe and its inhabitants, vows, theory of karma and finally Salvation.

If you crave for knowledge and peace, you must find one and a half hour from your busy schedule and come to Swadhyay at the temple. It serves two objectives: Bhakti and Gnan.

JIVDAYA Committee Update 2018

“Let each moment Studyof our life be illuminedClass with Corner the light of “Ahinsa & Compassion”

Jai Jinendra / Pranam,

On behalf of JSGD Jiv Daya committee we would like to thank you for your generous donation during 2018 Paryushan Parva in Detroit. We are able to collect close to $ 14,000 during the Parva and we have more fund available for this cause to distribute. Your continuous commitment and contributions will make a remarkable difference and will provide invaluable services to mute, sick, aged and helpless animals and birds in rural areas of India and here in USA.

No price is too great to save a single life. With the help of donations from supporters, we will continue to see improvements and will be able to expand our services for this humble cause to the right charities. We are planning to have shed projects in some Panjrapole in India.

We are pleased to share the information that Construction of the New Animal Shelter House at Wakaner Panjrapole , just got completed per member of Parliament Lalitbhai Mehta. JSGD was one of the sponsor on this project. Over the last years JSGD has sent more than $50,000+ to 30+ different panjarapoles, from donations received from individuals and families, and many animals are saved from slaughter houses from generous donations. Jivdaya committee also supports SASHA Farm, MI which is the Midwest’s largest farm animal sanctuary.

We are going to disperse this fund in coming months to Panjarapoles in India and animal centers in North America. Every year we would like to send fund to new Panjrapoles and it is crucial to send Panjrapoles which are old and in rural areas which are neglected due to migration of Jain population towards major cities and only few families are left to support for this humble cause. We also would like to send fund to Panjrapoles outside Gujarat and need info. If you have any info on Panjarpole or animal centers in need, please provide contact and project information to any member of committee by 11/06/2018. Lansing Prayer Session

Jai Jinendra and Pranam to all! n last 46 years, since inception of our society history, first time, we are fortunate to have an invitation by Congressman. Tim Greimel and his team invited all society members to come to State Capital in Lansing for Jain Prayer. This trip was coordinated by Hemant & Veena Shah to visit State Capital on Tuesday (9/25/2018) during congressman caucuses. Thanks to Hemantbhai & Veenaben for long term vision.

Mahendrabhai Guruji & Shailaben were on the stage during the congressman session at 1:30pm to chant the prayer and explained the meaning of it.

This process was witnessed by many of our members who were present as shown in the picture below. After the prayer chanting, Tim Greimel team gave us the tour of one of the finest capital building.

Thanks to Manojbhai and Minaxiben who brought Masala tea and served before the event. Congressman and his team were enjoying tea before the event started, and were pleased with our hospitality.

As our society is growing, it is nice to have good relations with government officials who have interest in our religion to be aware of. Our religion is nonpartisan and as a society, we do not support any party. But it is in the benefits of our society members to invite some government officials during our special event and keep them abreast of our activities.

This is very proud moment for our Sangh and we feel honored as our Jainism is recognized & well received at state level due to active participation of our JSGD members in community outreach.

Our JAINA Directors, Manish Mehta, Jinansh Shah and Pritish Shah are working with JAINA, so that detailed material prepared by JSGD for this kind of event can be utilized to carry out events at other centers in North America

Ad-Hoc Committees of BOT: Nomination and Election Committee:

This committee develops the nominations for the upcoming election of all the open positions on the BOT and EC. The BOT appoints five voting members including a chairperson to this committee at least eight weeks prior to the general body meeting designated for election. Current members of BOT and EC are ineligible to be appointed to this committee. Members appointed to this committee are ineligible to run for the upcoming election. The committee is dissolved on completion of the elections.

The committee sends out the application forms to the electable members six weeks prior to the General body meeting designated for election. The applications are to be returned within three weeks of mailing (three weeks prior to the e election) either through United State Postal Service or by electronic mail (e-mail) along with a mailing a posting will also be done at the temple notice board.

If no names are received for a position, the committee invites, scouts, and seeks candidates from the electable members. If more than one name is received for any position, the committee facilitates a consensus building process among the candidates so that election can be non-contested. Failing to arrive at such consensus, the committee submits all names to the voting members. A preliminary list of all the candidates is mailed to the membership within two (2) weeks of receiving applications (three, 3, weeks prior to the election) either through United State Postal Service or by electronic mail (e-mail) along with a mailing a posting will also be done at the temple notice board.

The application form along with such signatures must be submitted to the nomination committee at least one week prior to the election.

The committee facilitates the election at the general body meeting with the help of EC secretary. Chairperson of the committee announces the names of the elected members at the meeting. 35

If for any reason, the election cannot be conducted at the designated general body meeting, the mail ballots should be sent out within a week after the meeting either through United State Postal Service or by electronic mail (e-mail) along with a mailing a posting will also be done at the temple notice board. The mail ballots should be returned within four weeks after the meeting. The committee should announce the results of the election within a week after the closing of ballots.

Yatra - 2018

2018-JSGD-Sangh-Yatra-Summary

JSGD yatra committee organizedJain aOrganization Chaitya Pari Pati during the weekend of Senior of August 17 -18- -19,JOS 2018.

With Shashandev’s blessings, enthusiastic support of all the yatris, many JSGD volunteers, our EC/BOT and warm receptions from host sanghs, 90 yatris – in two buses - ranging in age from 2 yrs. old baby boy (Paras and Jigna Veera’s son - Vihhan) to seven 80+ yrs. young seniors successfully completed their 700 miles panch tirth yatra to various temples in Canada with good shata and in good health.

The yatris visited the following Centers during the yatra:  Hindu Cultural Center, London, Ontario o 62 Charterhouse Ct, London ON N5W 5V5 o Contact: Dr. Raju Shah Phone: 226-926-2687 o E-mail address: [email protected] o Website: www.hcclondon.ca  Jain Society of Toronto, Ontario o 48 Rosemeade Ave, Etobicoke, ON M8Y 3A5 o Contact: Vipul Shah, President Phone: 416-575-7598 o Website: www. jsotcanada.org  Brampton o 7875 Mayfield Rd, Bolton, ON L7E 0W1 o Contact: Gyan Chandra Jain, Founder Phone: 416-567-9405 o E-mail: [email protected]  Niagara Hindu Samaj, Shiv Mandir o 5284 2nd Ave, Niagara Falls ON L2E 4K2 o Contact: Mrs. Kanchan Rege, Founder Phone: 905-680-1631 o Website: www.niagarahindusamaj.org  Hindu Temple & Cultural Center of Windsor o 7007 Enterprise Way, Windsor ON N8T 3N6 o Contact: Chandubhai Morabia Phone: 519-254-3504 o Website: www.hmccw.org Friday August 17 After Navakarshi at our temple on Friday August 17, we did Samuhik Chaitya Vandan in our temple and had a group photo taken on the steps in the lobby. We left for London Ontario at 9am sharp as planned. As always, we recited Three Navakars, Uvasaggaharam and Moti Shanti after we left our temple. We crossed the border into Canada at Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron. We were initially concerned that border crossing may be a lengthy process given that we had 2 buses and 92 people (including two drivers). However, our concerns were unfounded and we were across the border in @ 20 minutes. Everyone from the buses were asked to get down at the immigration building – everyone’s passport was scanned and we re-boarded the buses. Hindu Cultural Center of London: We covered 70 miles distance to London in @ 75 minutes and arrived at about Noon. Although the London Jain group has a very small Jain population (@ 7-8 families), almost all of the members were at the temple, in addition to some of the Hindu center members - when we arrived. Mahavir Swami’s murti is in the Hindu cultural center. It was installed almost 25 years ago. After Darshan, Stuti recital and Samuhik Chaitya Vandan, we were treated to a nice lunch prepared by the local group. After lunch we sang some bhakti songs and heard a thought provoking sermon from the local pandit ji. We left London for Toronto at @ 3pm.

40

Jain Society of Toronto: We arrived at the Toronto Jain Temple at @ 5:30 pm – Many local sangh members were present to receive us. After Darshan and Samuhik Chaitya Vandan, we had dinner followed by Bhakti and Aarti/Divo. We checked into our hotel by 9:30 pm to rest for the night. The hotel, in Mississauga, was about half hour drive from the Temple. It should be noted that the Toronto Sangh does NOT use lilotari or dry fruits in any of their meals during four months of Saturday, August 18 After breakfast at the hotel, we all got ready to return back to the Toronto temple for Snatra Puja. We had planned on staying two nights at the same hotel to avoid pack up and check out in the morning. This made it easier for everyone to get ready for the puja. Toronto Temple had made all the arrangements for Snatra Puja for our group. Sharadbhai and Nalini conducted the Snatra Puja with help from other yatris and everyone had an opportunity to participate. We left Toronto temple by Noon and arrived at the Brampton Jain Temple - @ half hour drive. Brampton Jain Temple – Also known as - Bhagwan 1008 Adinath Swamy Jain Temple: This is one of the most beautiful Jain Temples in Canada/North America. The entire project was conceived, planned, designed and completed under the direction of the founder Shri Gyan Chandra Jain. He donated the land and funded the entire cost of the temple. The temple construction started in 2011 and Pratishtha Mahotsav took place in 2014. There is a 50+ ft. Manstambh at the entrance to the temple – The temple structure is a 3 story tall building and has all the modern facilities. Gyan Chandra ji has a very ambitious plan to add a school, community center and a senior residence complex on the 25 acre campus. Given his vision and determination, it is just a matter of time before it becomes a reality. Gyan Chadra ji, his wife, Mr. Talsania (Temple President), Dr. Raj Patil (Former JAINA VP for the Canada Region) and many others were all present to receive the sangh. The temple hall is specious with high ceiling and many religious paintings on the side walls. In the center, there are 3 digambar pratimajis – Shri Adinath, Shri Parshvanath and Shri Mahar Swami. After Darshan and Samuhik Chaitya Vanda, we proceeded down stairs for lunch prepared appropriately for “Atham” tithi. Gyan Chandra ji had tears in his eyes when he welcomed us to the temple. He was overwhelmed to see a Jain Sangh at his temple. We left Barmpton temple at @ 3pm for drive thru the downtown Toronto. We were able to get down and take some group/individual pictures at the Toronto City Hall and at CN Tower. This was a first time visit for many of the group and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Toronto City Hall is a modern structure with a large fountain in the front with a very large “TORONTO” sign. There is a mural, made of nails, in the front lobby of the City Hall and it is worth visiting. At the CN Tower, the group had an opportunity to take many pictures in front of the fountain and in front of the Sports Hall of Fame next door. We returned back to the Brampton Temple by 6:30pm – After dinner, we did Bhakti, Aarti/Divo and had an opportunity to hear from Gyan Chandra ji about the temple. He presented a small lighted replica of the temple to us which will be given to the JSGD management for display at an appropriate place in our temple. Just a side note about our visit to the Brampton Temple: While planning this yatra, we wanted to spend Saturday evening and night in Niagara Falls. We soon realized that it will be very difficult and expensive to find 50 hotel rooms in that area. So we decided to stay one more night in Toronto area. We did not want to bother Brampton Sangh for our dinner. This presented a challenge for us to organize a dinner in Toronto area. I talked to Gyan Chandra ji about our plan change and requested his assistance in finding an appropriate Jain caterer for our dinner. He said “Please consider this temple as your home and let us serve dinner to your sangh also – It will be our good fortune to do so”. This is the spirit of “Sadharmik Seva” and we were all touched by this gesture. Please google “Brampton Jain Temple Wikipedia” for more complete information. We returned back to our hotel by 9:30 pm. Sunday, August 19 After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel for our journey to Niagara Falls. We reached Niagara Falls Shiv Mandir at @ 10 am. – about 70 miles drive from our hotel. Although there are very few (6-8) Jain families in the area, they were all there in addition to the members of the Board of Trustees of the Shiv Mandir to welcome us.

41

Niagara Falls Shiv Mandir: Mrs. Kanchan Rege, wife of Late Dr. Udayan Rege – Founder and Visionary – shared some of the details of this temple which was established in 1999. It showed the spirit and desire to maintain our culture and religious upbringing for our future generations. We had planned a picnic lunch after leaving Niagara Falls. We encountered some difficulties in finding an appropriate place where 90+ people can have a picnic. After some google search (Thanks to many of the yatris), we found a nature preserve near Grimsby for our lunch. Although it required some walking and carrying all the lunch supplies to the picnic area, our ladies prepared a delicious bhel for everyone. We also had Watermelon and Gulab Jamun for desserts before proceeding to our final destination in Windsor. We had planned to reach Windsor by @ 6:30pm but the delays in finding a picnic place added an extra hour to our plan and we reached the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of Windsor at @ 7:30 pm. Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of Windsor: A large group of Windsor temple members welcomed us all when we arrived. The enthusiasm and excitement with which we were received can only be experienced in person. Because of the lateness of the hour, we proceeded for the dinner immediately. As always, a delicious dinner was served by the local volunteers and everyone enjoyed it. Following the dinner, we gathered in the prayer hall. Many religious deities, including a pratimaji of Shri Ajitnath Bhagwan is installed in the mandir. After Bhakti and Aarti/Divo, Chandubhai Morabia (also a member of JSGD) welcomed us all and expressed their appreciation for bringing our sangh to their temple. The welcoming group included many youngsters who received us warmly. It was almost 10pm when we left the Windsor temple for our journey home. The crossing at the border was uneventful and we all reached our temple at @ 11:30 pm. General Observations Throughout the yatra, we spent many hours in the bus. A great deal of the time in the bus was devoted to a variety of Jainism related activities including:  Games related to religious knowledge  Q&A about Jain topics  Stavan Antakshri  Bhakti songs & Desh Bhakti songa  Sharing of the Jain Knowledge and philosophy  Sharing of the memories and experiences of previous yatras Many of the yatris had come prepared with material necessary to help everyone learn while having fun. Although everyone helped, special mention goes to:  Sharadbhai and Naliniben for organizing all the religious activities  Jyotsanaben and Rajnibhai Shah for all the fun games, Q & A’s and also for prizes to game winners  Many volunteers who sang Stavans, Bhakti and other songs  All the donors/sponsors who helped cover some of the yatra costs  Sharadbhai for taking the yatra pictures Yatra photos have already been e-mailed by Sharadbhai. Yatra organizers greatly appreciate everyone’s efforts, support and dedication. Plenty of snacks and refreshments were available throughout the yatra to keep everyone nourished and energized. Many thanks to all the volunteers who prepared snacks. The weather was pleasant and comfortable throughout the yatra. Our bus drivers, Dannielle and Laila, were always helpful and smiling. They happily accommodated our plan changes and brought us home safe and sound. It is suggested that if you liked the yatra, please plan on joining us in future yatras and tell your friends and family to participate also. If you have any suggestions to improve our yatra experience, please feel free to share it with us via e- mail.

42

During the yatra, if anyone was hurt or offended by our conduct, we offer our “Michhami Dukkadam”. We extended an invitation to all the host centers to bring a yatra to our temple when convenient. We request all the yatris to participate in welcoming other sanghs when they visit our temple. This was another memorable JSGD yatra and we look forward to many more such experiences in the future.

Thanks and Jai Jinendra! On Behalf of the Yatra Organizing Team
