Uniquely rooted in science and the humanities, the McGovern Medical School is the 6th largest medical school in the U.S. — exceeding 1,000 students and 1,000 residents in recent years. Since its inception, the school has graduated more than 6,000 physicians, of which 6TH nearly 70 percent have remained in Texas. In November 2015, the school was named to honor the tremendous legacy of John P. and largest medical school Kathrine G. McGovern through a transformational gift from the John P. McGovern Foundation – the largest gift in the university’s history. The late John P. McGovern, MD, was a pediatrician, in the U.S. allergist, immunologist and educator who helped shape the , including the medical school, in its formative years.

CENTERS AND INSTITUTES OF NOTE

Much more than an institution of higher learning, the McGovern Medical School conducts ground-breaking research, provides high-quality patient care and is home to more than 20 centers and institutes focusing on diseases like Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease. The McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics, which was established in 2004 with a generous donation from the McGovern Foundation, aims to address the dehumanizing forces in health care today. With its focus on ethics and humanities, the Center serves all six of the university’s schools, making a profound impact across the university and our interdisciplinary patient-centered approach to health care. 1ST Our Children’s Learning Institute combines data and studies from the fields of psychology, neurodevelopment and education to provide learning solutions — many of which have been used at schools across the state. in the nation to The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human launch a mobile stroke Diseases is working to prevent diseases at the genetic and molecular levels through DNA ambulance unit and stem cell research, among others. Our Harris County Psychiatric Center is the largest provider of inpatient psychiatric care in Houston, providing vital mental health services to children, adolescents and adults.
