From the CDO Well May has been a very busy month, Autumn is definitely. here Hopefully by the time you read this our new toilets and Bus shelter will have been installed on the main street. Its been a long time coming, so will be good to finally see the finished results. Our community hall upgrade is slowly becoming a reality with tender docs being drawn up soon for the internal works. I am very much looking forward to getting a bigger office! Now winter is here all the winter sports have started up, with social basketball, social soccer and Badminton all back at the hall for the season.

Fun and frolics in Franz in April……. South Westland Triathlon April was certainly a busy month with the South Westland Triathlon and the Glacier Games. The Triathlon was held on Saturday 21st April. Competitors ran from the Franz community hall to Jetty Bay at the Lake Maporika. This was a distance of 9 kms, Then they hopped into Kayaks and paddled across the lake to Ottos corner. This was a distance of 5 kms. From there it was onto bikes peddling all the way to Whatorora Domain covering a distance of 19kms to the finish line. It was a great turnout. Bright and tight was the theme, and most people had entered into the spirit of it really well. Next year will be the Triathlon’s 30th birthday. Obviously this event had clearly stood the test of time & it is a true testament to the volunteers, (yes, they are all volunteers) who help to put on this event year on year, if you want to be involved in any way then please check out the South Westland triathlon facebook page.

The Games The Franz Josef Glacier Games were held a week after on Saturday 28th April, It was a true west coast day, raining!!, but this didn’t dampen the 61 competitors spirts at all. There were 12 teams, we had the dirty hippies, the unicorns, Jager Blondes & Ninjas to name a few, obviously each team was dressed as their name sake. Various businesses and organisations through town had hosted a game or challenge for the teams to complete. These challenges had been kept secret to ensure teams couldn’t cheat. The games were amazing!! There was a horizontal bungy, hobby horse dressage, a rock quiz, when the teams visited the police challenge half the team got arrested and the rest of the team had to get them out of jail by answering a quiz correctly. The games went on all day, and in the evening there was the prize giving, a dinner and dancing up at the Franz community hall. The winners were Fake it till you make it, with team T’Dubbers coming in 2nd and the Jager Blondes coming in 3rd. The evening was catered for by local restaurants who donated their food, and Neckta a band from Hoki played into the night. The event was put on to raise money for Franz Josef Civil defence. It raised over $5600. Which is fantastic. Once again, it was all put together by a well oiled trusty team of volunteers. Huge thanks to them, the businesses who took part, the teams who competed, and the restaurants & cafes who donated food for the evening do. It was an awesome community day!!

What a crazy bunch of chuffing good sports!!!! Well done everyone!!

8 Franz Josef June 2018

Franz Josef School We started the term celebrating our ANZAC soldiers with both classes completing poppy artworks. Our term focus is the impact mankind has had on animals and their environment. Room 2 are busy researching extinct and endangered species to create their own informative magazine and writing reports about the extinction of the moa. Room 1 and 3 are looking at animals and their habitats and the impact of plastic in our oceans. Room 2 spent a day working with Kate Buckley learning how to make cenotaph prints using an art press. We used samples from our school bush track to create the cenotaph and the final prints look amazing! We have been training for our annual Cross Country event at Whataroa School in June and practising large ball skills to play sports such as soccer, netball and basketball. Every week Jodie and Dan Treanor come into school and teach Te Reo and Kapahaka with our students. We would like to thank you for your time and commitment to out tamariki, both the students and teachers learn so much from the time we spend together

Glacier Country kidsfirst:

This month’s Glacier Country message is one of many Thank yous. We are so fortunate to have an amazing group of families who get involved and help to raise funds for new resources for our tamariki, also giving us a helping hand to fix and repair and maintain the wonderful environment created for us as a community by Kidsfirst. We are extremely grateful for all your help and support. Recently, the teachers have also had the amazing opportunity to attend the Kidsfirst Kindergarten’s Annual Hui. During the Hui all the Kindergartens under the Kidsfirst organisation umbrella (West Coast, Christchurch and Otago) get together and get to listen to wonderful speakers from around the world. An amazing opportunity for us to grow and develop as teachers, allowing us to provide the best and most up to date care and education for the children in our community. As teachers we are incredibly fortunate to be provided with this opportunity on a yearly basis and can’t wait to put all that we have learnt into practice.

Badminton Little kids badminton on Tuesdays is at 3.30 pm up at the hall till 4.00 pm. this is for age 6 & under. Juniors (6 & up) & beginners play at 6.30 pm – 7.30 pm then experienced adults play at 7.30 pm .Jim Hoffman from Hokitika came to do some coaching with the Franz club in May. It was an impressive turnout of adults and children alike. Jim was able to impart his top level knowledge on to Franz club which will hopefully help Franz to win some competitions!! Thanks to all players big and small who turned out in support of Jim.

Soccer Holly Henery is taking soccer coaching for children on a Thursday afternoon at 3.30 pm-4.00 pm for the 6th grade ( under 6’s) and then 3.30-4.30pm for older children. It was the first week last week and 27 kids turned up which was great! The coaching is done under the Westland united football club in Hokitika. So if any kids want a kick about then it’s at school if it’s not raining and at the Franz community hall if it is raining! All children are welcome, even if they don’t want to commit to officially playing for Westland United each week up in Hokitika, they can always come for training after school on a Thursday.

South Westland toy Library Plans are afoot to move toy library from its current location in a storeroom at the Franz community hall to the Glacier Country Kids First early childhood centre, next to Franz Josef school. This will make it more accessible allowing it to be open weekly. The Toy Library has been given lots of new toys from Greymouth Toy Library which has had to sadly close, for which we are very grateful for. The Toy library caters for all children from birth to around 8 years, toys can be borrowed for 2 weeks at a time. South Westland toy library is open to all families in South Westland. For more info on joining, please contact Helen Jones [email protected]. Why buy when you can borrow?

St Peter’s/ Our Lady of the River Jacob’s River Consultation

At Easter a hui was held at the Marae to talk about the way forward after St Peter’s Church was destroyed in the February storms. The building is a ruin so the task was to consider options exist for the future. In the late 1920s the property was bought by the Anglican Church Property Trustees from Mr Ritchie and rezoning because it was ‘Maori land’. There are records of donations made by local people, some of whom also donated materials and labour. Over the years, apart from regular worship, christenings, weddings and funerals have taken place there. For many years local Roman Catholics used the church and the name of ‘Our Lady of the River’ came into common usage. More recently the Hall Committee assumed responsibility for repairs and maintenance.

In 2015 Bishop Victoria Matthews joined others to inaugurate the Pioneer Church Trail from Jacob’s River to Harihari, and the church remained opened to visitors and quarterly Anglican services have been held. Today, travelling south across river one notices the empty space where a small wooden church stood as an icon on the side of the road.

All possibilities were discussed. As the building was so under-utilised people thought a rebuild was too costly, but suggestions included a lawned area with a picnic tables and information boards, or a miniature copy of the building, or a structure outlining the original building on the same consecrated site with information boards. People felt it was important to respect the sacred site and to honour the vision of the community through the years. It was also thought we could particularly recognise the Maori families who have lived in the area for close to 1000 years.

Should you wish to add your say to the conversation please text or phone a Warden Helen Rasmussen on or email myself at [email protected]. The decision will be made in July.
