Help will be there if I need it ● 3 min a station group of 5-6 (3 stations total) ● 1st station rotations ○ Jump to the ball ○ Front the cutter (cutter touch rim and go oppo wing) ○ Close outs are head on ○ Driver go b/l and help meets outside paint ○ On the ball leaves trap on pass ● 2nd station- traps Comment [2]: 1 down ○ On trap...trapper be disciplined-don’t leave on pass fake or dribble ○ CAN”t Get Split ○ Trap isn’t for a steal...Don’t foul or give up position ○ Let Offense make mistake ● 3rd station-block outs ○ Lead with Forearm and front pivot...hands free and ride with him ○ Play it make or miss ○ Work both directions-then O choice ○ Reverse pivot puts on heels and lose vision ● 3-3 ○ Position to guard ○ Jump to ball & front the cutter -ball side foot forward ■ Drive b/l and trap/rotation ■ Go early and get there before your needed ○ Skip drill O can’t make 2 straight passes w/out a skip ■ Drive on skip back and drive b/l ■ Work rotation and play live ○ Pride drill-take charge (toughness drill) ■ Gap man stunt & recover ■ On ball reversal b/l drive and take charge defender catch & flip to coach ■ Coach pass out and catch and shoot to work block out ■ Have to get a rebound to get out of drill ○ # rebound ■ Defenders on midline in spots 1, 2 or 3 ■ Coach passes and calls a number ■ That spot closes to ball and 2 helpers talk it out ■ Catch and shoot ■ Block out drill Didn’t use to teach rotations-use to be get beat b/l a lot, get taken out Rotations build teamwork, culture, trust & communication Drills teach what it takes to be a unit ● Change angles of 3-3 drills/start with coach throw out ● Man making 1st rotation has toughest job to stay in position out of trap ● Play through mistakes ● Ball side foot up instead of parallel to help on closeouts and cut away ● If you have to move into gap on the dribble, you weren’t in gap ● Get out of gap as teammate catches up ● Be there as often as we can on the catch ● Move out of gap as dribble picked up 4-4 ● Jump to ball & front the cutter ○ Last man covers the hole on a b/l drive ○ Ball side sinks to centerfield ● “Butler” Drill ○ 4-3 with defender at half court ○ 18 sec on clock ○ 1st 6 sec only passing 4-3 catch & hold 1count ○ Call “ball” if taking ball “gap” off of it ○ On go sprint back down the middle ○ When last defender splits top 2 its live ○ Anything but ball screen ● 4-4 change drill ○ Ball moves d moving to gaps ○ Coach calls “change” ○ Set ball down O sprints to paint and changes sides of floor ○ D steps out and pick ball up ○ Don’t run all the way to man if he’s away from ball-run to gap ○ 1 pass after change then live or live on the pick up 5-5 ● Shut out drill ○ 30 sec shot clock ○ Keep shot clock at the stop time (d rebound at 7 keep clock at 30) ○ D has to wind down til 30 seconds gone ○ Can keep D in drill til they get it to 0 or you got 1 more shot and then you got a down back down back 7 Point Game (keep same O & D) ○ D gets 1 point for every stop ○ O gets their points (common foul 1 pt) ○ D has to get 7 stops to win ○ Forces really good D ○ O wins most of the time ○ Builds your team & Defensive identity ○ Go live on the catch after reversal so we don’t just get good at drill (work end shot clock situation) Can only get out of drill with clean stop Leaving to trap...run to get next to teammate--can’t get split Double the post big-big against traditional 4 out team double post from opposite elbow or dig out from least dangerous shooter MIke Moran John Carrol U.- ”Platooning-How We Play” ● Top 10 List Reasons to Listen to me speak ○ 10-Difficulties sharing the gym and the amount of time in the gym ○ 9- Scrutiny of limited budgets ○ 8- None of us are overpaid ○ 7 ○ 6- Work with underpaid part time assistants with families, mortgages & jobs ○ 5- Share our athletes with other sports ○ 4- Criticized by same loud-mouth parents & fans ○ 3- Games officiated by men wanted for hate crimes against coaches ■ Why aren’t officials required to pass physicals or conditioning tests? ○ 2- Drink heavily after wins...We like to Celebrate ○ 1- Drink heavily after we lose ● We platoon b/c its been successful over the past 20 years ○ 10 OAC championships ○ 11 Div. III NCAA tourney appearances ○ Our level of talent is level across the roster ● In high school at Cleveland St. Joe’s had Clark Kellogg ○ Taught me talent determines success level ● Advantages of platooning ○ Comes from football ○ 1950’s LSU Chinese Bandits ■ 2nd String that didn’t see field much..played to give breaks ■ Give up a score your out ■ Played harder and together ■ They don’t understand they are average players ■ They think they’re good ○ Tried it at St Joe’s ■ Small, aggressive-give up 4 pts your out ○ Started at JCU ■ Go on time ■ Tried per score ■ Now based on possessions (6-8 possessions) ○ Increases depth 10-12 ready to play ○ Increases practice intensity and competition ○ Eliminates player thoughts 1st string or no string ○ 90 possessions increases shots for all ○ Caters to HS b/c of changes in talent level from year to year ○ Protects against “best players” having bad games ○ Protects against foul trouble ○ Makes for easier adjustments ○ Allows to teach different pressures ○ Harder to prepare for-getting ready to play 2 different teams ○ Happier players & parents ○ Involves more coaches Worst thing you can do is not use an assistant coach ● Offensively we are 1st & Goal ● Every time you touch the ball its 1st & Goal-No different in basketball ● Get the ball and GO ○ Push, pitch and then some dribble drive elements ● Force D to defend us in a backpedal ● Speed up the game Bothers me that officials make us wait on dead ball until D is ready If you are prepared..you don’t need timeouts or white boards Don’t give other team/coach advantage by calling timeout ● We never use the full timeout ● Don’t know what to talk to assistants about during media timeouts ● Defense-We are pressuring each possession ○ We want players to think we are still on offense ○ 1 deflection away from having the ball ● Can’t be on the same page if you aren’t in the same book ● Should take you as long to prepare practice plan than it does to have practice ● Stretch on your own….can’t use gym time to stretch ● Warm up is Special Situation break 4 min.
