Archie Miller University of Dayton- ”Dayton’s Shooting Program”

● Nothing more important ● Changed the way we recruit ● Get a guy one way and have him leave another ● Hammer feet Approach, Balance at all levels ● Consistent maniacal footwork ● Shooting program similar to weight program ● 6 week program during 2nd year at Arizona ● 3 days a week ● Dad recorded what you are doing ● Measured goals (daily, weekly) ● Only way to show player getting better is data ● 20-45 min workout from menu ● Premise of program is to put week by week program & recorded ● Every rep is a game rep on the clock ● High intensity shooting workout simulates game fatigue ● Players have to figure out how to fight through the fatigue to improve %’s ● Shouldn’t be fun ● As serious as practice ● Keep language the same if you change drills ● Start inside the line 12-14 feet ● Work game speed ● 1-2 step 2’s 5 rounds of 60 sec. ● Feet hit the ground same way every time ● 70% on unguarded is good ● 70%-8)0% unguarded is an elite shooter ● 60 sec goal to make 15 a spot in a min ● Train body to shoot same shot each time ● Breathe right when fatigued ● Jordan Sibert during red shirt went from 21 3’s in 2 years @ OSU to 163 in 2 years Comment [1]: check the stat @Dayton ● Poor mechanics will get fewer shots ● Want to make it in a game, make it now ● Work from 3 next ● 40-45 sec 60 sec or 90 sec 3 min round=steph curry’s ● Same feet every time ● Ready to shoot when ball hits your hand ● Finish the shot before worrying about next shot ● Know data when you leave the gym ● Teach teammates to be a game passer ( on time on target) ● Sometimes shooting workout turns into rebounders workout ● 10 min start is better than what most do in a week ● Now straight to the foul line 2 FT’s water and towel ● Next set “Hubie Brown’s on the move” ● 4 sets at 60 sec. Hardest thing to do...goal is 40 makes ● Can shoot 2 ft’s between each or every 2 sets ● Off down screen then flare ● Don’t pass early ● Repeat same footwork ● Make him run-fight through fatigue ● Get feet set on the move when you’re tired ● Going away from ball get butt flush to the sideline ● 1-2 step gets you going to the rim ● Skip pass away and chest pass to ● Beginners or in season go 30-40 sec a round ● Last 10 sec of drill is “when they count” ● Finish better than they start =focus ● Left foot coming right at the ball ● Get tired emphasize follow thru ● Don’t run away till it goes in ● Next step get creative ○ Pulls up ○ Finishers ○ challengers

Next round ● 1 long dribble 5 spots 45 sec or up ● Don’t pass on backpedal ● Pass on 1-2 step ● Long dribble-”clear by throw ball out in front” ● “Break the floor board” ● Cover ground ● IF you can make it now...you can make it anytime ● Last round=Curry’s 3 rounds of 3 mins 40-45 makes a set (150 makes in 9 min.-wow) ● Separate with 4 FT between sets ● c/s 3’s top and each wing ● Great shape to be a great shooter ● #’s will go down at 1st...then consistent ● 2 finishers to finish-Celtic Drill ● Don’t worry about the miss just focus on the next ● 2nd finisher 15 makes in 90 sec- can’t move til make 3 a spot ● 25 made 3’s in 2 min….5 a spot ● Finishers/challengers at end demand focus & toughness ● Will incorporate 1 portion into in season practice ● For HS program ○ Use gun ○ Use own players with group of 3-4 ● Give #’s immediately and daily ● Bigs same drills but may keep 12-15 or 60 sec of jump hooks ● [email protected] (Bill Comar)

Ben Jacobson Northern Iowa - ”My Favorite Practice Drills” ● Defense isn’t very good 1st ? “Are you guarding the ball?” ● Pack Line Team ● Guard ball 1st ● Practice 1-1 live to get better at guarding ball ● Be good at rotations, but can’t spend each possession in rotations ● Pack doesn’t mean rely on teammates help ● Mentality I’m going to guard the ball!! Help will be there if I need it ● 3 min a station group of 5-6 (3 stations total) ● 1st station rotations ○ Jump to the ball ○ Front the cutter (cutter touch rim and go oppo wing) ○ Close outs are head on ○ Driver go b/l and help meets outside paint ○ On the ball leaves trap on pass ● 2nd station- traps Comment [2]: 1 down ○ On trap...trapper be disciplined-don’t leave on pass fake or dribble ○ CAN”t Get Split ○ Trap isn’t for a ...Don’t foul or give up position ○ Let Offense make mistake ● 3rd station- outs ○ Lead with Forearm and front pivot...hands free and ride with him ○ Play it make or miss ○ Work both directions-then O choice ○ Reverse pivot puts on heels and lose vision ● 3-3 ○ Position to guard ○ Jump to ball & front the cutter -ball side foot forward ■ Drive b/l and trap/rotation ■ Go early and get there before your needed ○ Skip drill O can’t make 2 straight passes w/out a skip ■ Drive on skip back and drive b/l ■ Work rotation and play live ○ Pride drill-take charge (toughness drill) ■ Gap man stunt & recover ■ On ball reversal b/l drive and take charge defender catch & flip to coach ■ Coach pass out and catch and shoot to work block out ■ Have to get a to get out of drill ○ # rebound ■ Defenders on midline in spots 1, 2 or 3 ■ Coach passes and calls a number ■ That spot closes to ball and 2 helpers talk it out ■ Catch and shoot ■ Block out drill

Didn’t use to teach rotations-use to be get beat b/l a lot, get taken out Rotations build teamwork, culture, trust & communication Drills teach what it takes to be a unit

● Change angles of 3-3 drills/start with coach throw out ● Man making 1st rotation has toughest job to stay in position out of trap ● Play through mistakes ● Ball side foot up instead of parallel to help on closeouts and cut away ● If you have to move into gap on the dribble, you weren’t in gap ● Get out of gap as teammate catches up ● Be there as often as we can on the catch ● Move out of gap as dribble picked up

4-4 ● Jump to ball & front the cutter ○ Last man covers the hole on a b/l drive ○ Ball side sinks to centerfield ● “Butler” Drill ○ 4-3 with defender at half court ○ 18 sec on clock ○ 1st 6 sec only passing 4-3 catch & hold 1count ○ Call “ball” if taking ball “gap” off of it ○ On go sprint back down the middle ○ When last defender splits top 2 its live ○ Anything but ball screen ● 4-4 change drill ○ Ball moves d moving to gaps ○ Coach calls “change” ○ Set ball down O sprints to paint and changes sides of floor ○ D steps out and pick ball up ○ Don’t run all the way to man if he’s away from ball-run to gap ○ 1 pass after change then live or live on the pick up 5-5 ● Shut out drill ○ 30 sec shot clock ○ Keep shot clock at the stop time (d rebound at 7 keep clock at 30) ○ D has to wind down til 30 seconds gone ○ Can keep D in drill til they get it to 0 or you got 1 more shot and then you got a down back down back 7 Point Game (keep same O & D) ○ D gets 1 point for every stop ○ O gets their points (common foul 1 pt) ○ D has to get 7 stops to win ○ Forces really good D ○ O wins most of the time ○ Builds your team & Defensive identity ○

Go live on the catch after reversal so we don’t just get good at drill (work end shot clock situation) Can only get out of drill with clean stop

Leaving to trap...run to get next to teammate--can’t get split Double the post big-big against traditional 4 out team double post from opposite elbow or dig out from least dangerous shooter

MIke Moran John Carrol U.- ”Platooning-How We Play”

● Top 10 List Reasons to Listen to me speak ○ 10-Difficulties sharing the gym and the amount of time in the gym ○ 9- Scrutiny of limited budgets ○ 8- None of us are overpaid ○ 7 ○ 6- Work with underpaid part time assistants with families, mortgages & jobs ○ 5- Share our athletes with other sports ○ 4- Criticized by same loud-mouth parents & fans ○ 3- Games officiated by men wanted for hate crimes against coaches ■ Why aren’t officials required to pass physicals or conditioning tests? ○ 2- Drink heavily after wins...We like to Celebrate ○ 1- Drink heavily after we lose ● We platoon b/c its been successful over the past 20 years ○ 10 OAC championships ○ 11 Div. III NCAA tourney appearances ○ Our level of talent is level across the roster ● In high school at Cleveland St. Joe’s had Clark Kellogg ○ Taught me talent determines success level ● Advantages of platooning ○ Comes from football ○ 1950’s LSU Chinese Bandits ■ 2nd String that didn’t see field much..played to give breaks ■ Give up a score your out ■ Played harder and together ■ They don’t understand they are average players ■ They think they’re good ○ Tried it at St Joe’s ■ Small, aggressive-give up 4 pts your out ○ Started at JCU ■ Go on time ■ Tried per score ■ Now based on possessions (6-8 possessions) ○ Increases depth 10-12 ready to play ○ Increases practice intensity and competition ○ Eliminates player thoughts 1st string or no string ○ 90 possessions increases shots for all ○ Caters to HS b/c of changes in talent level from year to year ○ Protects against “best players” having bad games ○ Protects against foul trouble ○ Makes for easier adjustments ○ Allows to teach different pressures ○ Harder to prepare for-getting ready to play 2 different teams ○ Happier players & parents ○ Involves more coaches

Worst thing you can do is not use an assistant coach

● Offensively we are 1st & Goal ● Every time you touch the ball its 1st & Goal-No different in basketball ● Get the ball and GO ○ Push, pitch and then some dribble drive elements ● Force D to defend us in a backpedal ● Speed up the game

Bothers me that officials make us wait on dead ball until D is ready If you are prepared..you don’t need timeouts or white boards Don’t give other team/coach advantage by calling timeout

● We never use the full timeout ● Don’t know what to talk to assistants about during media timeouts

● Defense-We are pressuring each possession ○ We want players to think we are still on offense ○ 1 deflection away from having the ball ● Can’t be on the same page if you aren’t in the same book ● Should take you as long to prepare practice plan than it does to have practice ● Stretch on your own….can’t use gym time to stretch ● Warm up is Special Situation break 4 min. ○ 5-0 Press Breaks ○ Take FT X Stunt ○ 5-0 Press Breaks ○ 5 secs left ○ 4 secs left ● “Personnel” All guys have a label (slasher, scorer, shooter, plumber) 4 mins ○ Work closeouts against what personnel strength is ○ 5 guys around arc 1 defender with a few reps each coach throws out and calls label ● 2 groups working defending ball screens ○ 1 group working hard hedge ○ 1 group working blitz ● 5 man shell live ○ Hold play cards up for “scout” ○ Tell each coach who to watch ○ 3 groups Scout o group sees card ready to play ○ 3 stops in a row and you stay on ○ We reward by letting them keep playing ● Full Court D ○ Make non ball handlers handle the ball ○ Bigs will bring up, but won’t take it to rim...they are looking to get it to a guard ○ Will double a ball handler if he touches it ○ Guards lock in to their man and never leave ○ Face guard most time on guards during in bounds. Make entry difficult

Jay Wright Villanova- ”Villanova’s Multiple Defenses”

● Basic concept of showing 1 look but doing multiple things ● We do it out of ¾ court look ● Coaching for Rollie Massamino-his philosophy ● 1-2-2 ¾ set can move it back to slow down or up to keep pressure up ○ Will zone press but always drop back to man ○ Can also show and then go to man on 1st pass ○ Will show 1-1-2-1 and drop to 2-3 ● Aggressive in the backcourt and drop to man ● We don’t worry if the opposing coaches know what we are doing-make players uncomfortable ● We don’t care how smart we are, we want our guys to be comfortable ● We execute what we practice and will talk about opponent is doing-don’t change in game ● Play off of our habits ● IF you press, you HAVE to play harder than your opponent ● If we are in it, we are aggressive ● Everything we do in practice is to create habits for the most difficult situation ● Toughest team to press is a good passing team who attacks to get 3’s ● #1 rule is NO MIDDLE-want mind set to be don’t let ball get middle ● Point attack small/retreat big...don’t give up dribble middle ● Want ALL traps to be on sideline ● Have to trap enough to authenticate your “fakes” ● Forcing guard to pick up dribble in backcourt and retreating is more important than traps ● IF you get to help middle and no O is there STAY MIddle, just back up ● Weak side back man is on the midline responsible for deep skip ● Stay patient leaving middle when ball gets reversed-let ball come up sideline ● Will trap in trap areas at ½ court and baseline ● Will trap more against smaller skilled teams who want to slow down ● Trap less against bigger or more athletic teams-save the trap for end game out of timeout ● “Blitz-Step Up” deny everyone ball side and leave furthest away unguarded ● Our press is more effective on execution of non traps-guys are too good to get trapped ● But slowing down to have to play ½ court d for less than 20 sec is our goal ● What we do when trap is beat is more important to us ● Create habits for most difficult situation ● Prepare for your trap to get beat ● Set up situations in practice where we get beat in trap ● Anytime they beat a trap...automatic “convert” we know what we will do ○ Anybody ahead or even of ball sprint to paint ○ Load to ball side ○ Point to a man ○ Behind the ball chase the ball from behind ■ Practice from behind lay out and tap ball with inside hand ○ Make them speed up out of trap ○ We also “convert” vs. diagonal skip ○ Never try to play perfect-Always try to play hard & play together ○ Vs. wheel or 3 back...keep it square on ball and pinch middle ○ Attack presses to score at ALL times ○ Vs. teams using skip and make 3’s ■ Show same look we go man on 1st pass ■ Communication huge to matchup ■ Everyone is up the line ■ Furthest guy from ball yells “BACK” so we can stay up the line ■ If dribbler beats man...up the line contain and switch...beat defender sprints back to get furthest man away ■ If beat off the dribble becomes “Convert” ■ React to your teammate more than react to rules ○ 1-1-2-1 back to 2-3 ■ Back man can’t let anything behind him

Start games in pressure and be aggressive...can always back off...harder to start ½ & go full We want our guys to think “I am a committed, maniacal, aggressive defender.” Still valuable against great offensive players if they have to play a little faster than they want At least put a zone in for your D to practice Zone O

Jim Boeheim Syracuse- “Our 2-3 Zone Defense” ● My 1st Nike clinic was on 2-3 zone, and my 10th and my 20th, 25th…. ● We used to practice the 1st 4 ½ weeks on man...and put zone in late ● That has changed...start practice with shooting/position drills and also include zone d drills ● Teams have great plays to get best shooter a shot vs. man. Don’t have many vs zone ● How many coaches have zone plays ● Its hard to score in the high post ● We get ready for what you will do on zone o from the beginning...not much you can do ● Try to play 3 perimeter players with 2 defenders w/ help ● 5 guys move w/ ball ● Start by going against 7 on O and work hard on transition D ● Our D is better b/c it has to be….zone attacks have gotten better ● Force our D to play 20-25 sec in practice ● We change principles of zone in late shot clock...teams that attack us early looking for a shot hurt us more ● Practice 5 v 7 (5 on perimeter and 2 on the blocks) ● Everyday finish with 20 min of full court (10 min vs. man & 10 vs. zone) ● Transition D Drill live ½ court-coach has ball on each baseline...outlet to pg on shot attempt ● Positioning is important...pinch high post...they aren’t going to dribble up & shoot ● Lob from the point is center’s responsibility...from wing its backside forward’s ● Wing on entry pass is hard show and 1 step out to take away corner pass and get in passing lane...maybe not such a hard show if non shooter or 1st pass of possession ● We emphasize we always take away the 3 pt shot ● Led league in steals b/c we are active ● Zone makes teams pass the ball more...more opportunity to deflect & steal ● Know what kind of player the pg is Do I have to close or can I play the high post on reversal ● If ball gets to high post, center takes ball forwards have to dive & guards widen to the wing..allow pass to the top ● Some teams match up man and stay man once ball is to high post ● Forward’s rule is if he is open in front of me I got him ● On short corner pass...trap w/center & forward Automatic--back side forward takes dive away- GET ACROSS back side guard drops ● In practice O move ball for 20 sec and then let them attack...practice what you see in a game ● On short corner trap...if we know they like to throw over top...back side guard can stay higher ● Side ball screen hurts us...can “Down” the screen...if not...fight over if you can but if your caught go under don’t really want to commit backside guard ● 2nd thing we see is high ball screen after reversal-we can’t give up corner 3 after ball screen-try and step over the screen-drill it in breakdown ● Can run transition o much better out of zone ● We assign rebounding spots...center middle..forwards to the block..backside guard goes below high post away...ball side guard gets back to high post ● We want our back side forward to at least get a piece of the ball ● Aggressive to boards by opponent allow us to run out better ● Can sneak guards out sometimes, but never in late game situations ● Forces a lot of throws to ½ court on BLOB ● BLOB on or off the ball...center play low block...weak side forward take away corner pass. If they enter to ball side corner..Auto trap ● 10 min everyday on our press...need it to change tempo, especially when you don’t want to go man ● Hardest thing to do if you play both is know when to switch defense’s ● You don’t have to prepare for much opponent’s offense b/c not much difference in attack’s ● IF you can take away a scorer for a few minutes to start the game, they will jack a shot and get frustrated ● Extend vs shooters and get them off spots. Make them drive ● Don’t change defense b/c your offense is bad ● If you play both...play zone last 3 min...shooters start to feel pressure and make someone else shoot ● Good zone D determines who shoots on O ● End game situation man d gives up more straight line drives or fouls ● End game situation zone d forces a pass ● Have to stick with it

Tom Billeter Augustana- “Full-Court Offense” ● We are a Friday/Saturday league play get on the bus at 10 and drive to next game ● You can control tempo on offense ● Basketball is such a great sport ● Started with nothing and had to start w/out ● We want to attack in all situations ● Fast break “Pre-Set” run make or miss ● Keep it simple and teach concepts ● We want to do things nobody else does ● 3 always takes the right wing/ 2 left rim runner and rebounder is trail ● Outlet to middle between volleyball lines...catch heading toward hoop ● Pitch ahead as soon as you can. And attack if you can ● Wings run ride as possible “grab some popcorn” down the floor ● If wing catches early...take to corner and set up b/l bounce pass then skip looking for hi/lo-if hi/lo taken away reverse to corner and trailer cut thru opposite ● 4 man always in-bounds-grab out of net clear line and clear glass ● Must run to corners in transition-forces help d in tough spots and allows pg & trailer can see everything ● If pitch ahead is taken away “PIpe” drive at him to corner while wing zipper cuts under low post and up lane line-trailer gets below cutter to set ball screen on reversal ● Ball screen at angle not parallel-butt to corner ● If teams go under ball screens- screen lower ● On ball screen-low block player stay to set up roll & replace ● On reversal/sprint to ball screen and roll to range or refuse and hammer cut ● Ball screeners need to be good fakers to set up his defender ● Build in closeouts for your offensive players especially slashers ● You are allowed to be selfish and attack in Pre-sets ● Play 18 sec shot clock games in practice ● 5 man has to work to get open so he catches and thinks score or kick out and score ● No Catch Dribble ● We love pressure...let their defense lead to our offense ● On ball screens any use of screen and attack paint=roll refuse screen=pick & pop

Coaches have an impact on their players that last a lifetime Stay with what you are doing and make it as good as you can Do your work before the season starts-PREPARE Do what you know best

Norm Persin Oak Hill HS “Everyday Drills To Build Your Offense & Defense” ● Game is changing ● Players aren’t changing much, its the people around them that are changing ● Do it your way-the way you think its right ● Importance of clinics ○ Get motivated ○ Don’t get caught up with all you get ○ Does it fit talent, does it fit skill, does it fit team ● Biggest concern should be your players ● Players today don’t know how to play ● Tates Locke “Would you put your kid in a swimming pool, if they couldn’t swim? Then why do we put kids on the floor that can’t play?” ● 2 types of players you will have to deal with “waist down (athletes) or waist up (knows the game) IF they can do both-you have a helluva job ● How many players have athletic minds? Know situations ● Players don’t watch much basketball and don’t think the game when they do watch ● Put team in position to win ● Don’t work long hours, work smart hours ● Playing hard comes from how you practice ● Goal is to beat the best team on your schedule ● Set aside 5-10 minutes a practice to work on what you will need for best team on your schedule ● Best coaches today correct mistakes on everything ● Will only drill what we will use on O or D ● Concentration is a skill ● Use repetition ● Things you need as a coach ○ Defense determined by dribble penetration ○ Offense determined by NOT dribbling-ball movement/player movement ○ How to closeout!! Do it everyday ○ Turn on the pass/not on the catch ○ Hands in front (balance) ○ Shooting from the waist up/scoring from the waist down ○ Michael Jordan wanted shoulders lower than defenders hips off the catch ● Don’t let kids stand around during practice ○ If kids drill enough and don’t stand around-don’t need to condition ● Ball-Handling Drills ○ Nash’s-partners face each w/ a ball (2 BAll Passing) to outside hand ■ 2 dribbles then pass to outside hand (BE In a stance) ■ 2 dribbles cross then pass outside ■ 1 dribble cross/cross pass ○ Warm up drill ■ Line on top w/ball Line under rim and 1 ball on the rim ● V cut wing entry basket cut layup ● Fill cut & Back cut for 2nd layup (show hands) ● Add jump shots instead of layup ■ Trace Passer (3 Man drill) 2 O 1 D ● Work an offensive stance-Jab steps/pivots ● Defender traces the ball ● Passer sprint closeout ● Work each foot as pivot ● Work pass fake/rip through ■ 3 Man shooting drill ● Balls in corner (pass fake to coach) ● Line on top (come to ball) ● Line in corner (coming off down screen) ● Coach on baseline by balls ● Catch & attack ● Catch & 1 dribble elbow/spin to rim ● Catch & shot fake 1 dribble pull up ○ Shot fake=shot not taken ● Catch & shoot ■ Shooting drills are all off of ball reversal ■ Our rule is only take shots off of the 2nd touch ■ Balls all in corner 1 guy at top 1 in corner ● Count points ● Goal is 85 points in 2 minutes ● Any shot you want (game shot) ● Take away points if they go weak to the rim ● Follow your pass on sprint ● Focus on footwork ● Miss out 1st time..build up and increase goal for 2nd goal then run if they miss ■ Quick Hitter ● 3 lines on the baseline ● Ball in the middle ● Run break wide ● “When in doubt, spread out” ● 3 man pass back & layup ● Down & back ● Don’t let lines move til ball is in hands ● All lines touch baseline ● Drive & kick for corner 3 ● Double penetrate and kick back to pg on the slide ○ Run sets out of your normal offensive formation

Pressure on coaches is enormous-stick by your guns & do it the right way Adjust to your players skills Must think about where your players are going after they are done playing for you You are their last basketball stop-make it for them
