The Massachusetts women’s tennis team has a whole new look to it this season. With four players in their first year of competition at UMass, Head Coach Judy Dixon is looking for her young team to lead the Minutewomen to the top of the Atlantic 10 Conference standings in the 2002-03 season. “We are a young, talented team with a lot of potential,” said Dixon. The Minutewomen are returning only one senior on this year’s squad, Lindsey Gillooly, who has been sidelined with an injury.A fifth-year sen- ior, Gillooly is trying to come back from an injury that left her out of com- petition for a year and a half. Dixon expects Gillooly to return to action in March. In Gillooly’s absence, the leadership role has fallen on the three players who did compete for Massachusetts last year. The frontrunner in this trio is the team’s captain, junior Susan Hyams. “Susan Hyams is an excellent captain for us,” said Dixon. In her third year with the Minutewomen, Hyams has accumulated a 34- 25 record in singles play and a 39-19 mark in doubles. Dixon is also looking to junior Jafra Depontes and sophomore Stephanie Price to provide leadership for her young squad. “I am expecting the returning players to lead this team as well. I am Freshman Camilla Knight will see playing time at the No. 5 and looking for Stephanie and Jafra to spark us a little bit,” said Dixon. No. 6 singles positions this season. With a tough schedule ahead of them, the Minutewomen will have to be focused all season long. “This schedule is tough. There are very few breaks as far as playing weaker teams,” said Dixon. “We have one of the toughest schedules in the Northeast, playing four Ivy League teams and six nationally-ranked teams.” One of the elements Dixon is hoping will help her team succeed throughout this tough schedule is her team’s close-knit relationship. “This team gets along really well, which with so many new players com- ing in, that’s something you worry about. This is a really close team,” said Dixon. Bringing this team closer together is the experiences it shares while per- forming service work during the off-season. The Minutewomen are work- ing with 45 children, ages 7-14, from the Lawrence (Mass.) Boys and Girls Club this season. In November, team members spent a day meeting with the youth, assisting with homework, playing games and sharing a meal, and throughout the season they will continue to pursue a relationship with the children via e-mail. This type of experience is helping Dixon and her team set out to achieve the goals they have set for themselves for the 2002-03 season. “We want to perform well academically, continue to put players on the Academic All-American lists, finish the season at the top of our confer- ence, place players on the All-Conference team like Jafra (Depontes) and Jana Bartoloni is one of four players on this year’s squad who Stephanie (Price) were last year, stay injury free and be well-conditioned,” are in their first year of competition for Massachusetts. said Dixon.
