8 9 NEWS FROM CHURCH KNOWLE PARISH COUNCIL Councillors were also appointed to liaise the various village hall committees. Cllrs Page and Wilson would “look after” Furzebrook and Cllrs Best and Bugler would report on Church Knowle. June’s meeting of the Parish Council was lengthy; so much so that it had to After all that, Cllrs then went on to approve the minutes of the last meeting be spit over two days, one week apart and at two different venues! All this for a parish of just over three hundred souls. Anyway, what it does show is the following some amendment due to typographical errors and memory lapses by the Clerk as to who attended. (He’ll have to start taking the Ginkgo biloba commitment of the great and the good to do their best for Church Knowle, its again!) population and its environs. (Enough of this “brown nosing”, Clerk, just get on with it!!) Two planning applications were considered, those relating to an extension of

There was much to be discussed at Furzebrook village hall on the evening of planning permission development time on an already approved development 8th June and the Council and parishioners attending had been expecting the at Bucknowle Cottage (Cllr Parker having already declared a interest as Herpetological Trust to turn up and give a presentation on their activities neighbour), and a development at Icen Barn, Grange Road. After discussion, during the year but, sadly, this was not to be and disappointment ensued. the Council decided it had no objection to the granting of a time extension for The business meeting then began with the Chairman welcoming all 9 the Bucknowle Cottage development but felt that the tree growth that had Councillors (a full complement) and parishioners attending to the “other side occurred since permission was originally granted could affect the visual of The Hill”. The public discussion period concerned the indiscriminate aspect and that a visit be made by Purbeck planners before just “rubber stamping” the request. parking of vehicles allegedly associated with Herpetological Trust volunteers in Furzebrook Road causing obstruction and difficulty for tourist coaches They also thought the Icen Barn development required further investigation entering and leaving the Blue Pool drive. News from the National Trust in Purbeck – July 2010

As the lovely weather continues and many of us are heading to the beach for the day it seems timely to write about a topic which we know is close to many a visitor to Studland Beach; seaweed.

Studland beach is of national and international significance in terms of its wildlife and habitats. Seaweed is a natural feature of this coast with animals from both land and sea using deposited seaweed for food and shelter. Studland is an erosional beach and seaweed also helps build up the dunes and so protect the beach. Obviously seaweed is not always present on the beach as it tends to get washed in following easterly winds and, with the beach being 4 miles long only a very small percentage will be covered at any one time. Theatre in the Castle Whilst seaweed has so many benefits for nature conservation it is obviously not so helpful in terms of having a good day out on the beach. Illyria present Following an agreement with Natural England seaweed can only be removed during the summer months and only from restricted areas. These areas include Middle Beach slipway to the first gabion baskets, Romeo & Juliet immediately in front of the visitor centre at Knoll Beach and South Beach. 1 July 7.30pm (gates open 6.30pm)

Seaweed removal can cost up to £4000 following a strong storm. Its removal needs to be combined with low tides and when it is removed it Illyria also present turns the sand black, unstable and increases the smell. It is also very difficult to find suitable areas of land to store rotting seaweed on that will not cause offence to neighbours, start new eco systems or pollute water Pride & Prejudice courses. So if possible the National Trust would prefer the seaweed to disperse naturally with the next high tide. 15 July 7.30pm (gates open 6.30pm)

At present the seaweed which we do remove rots down and is sold as Tickets available NOW from our box office 0844 249 1895 domestic fertiliser and for use on allotments. Readers may be interested to know that, recently, a Purbeck D of E Group has been formed. We have had encouraging response from local youngsters aged 14 to 24, already totalling approximately 40 candidates registering for Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards. The Bronze Award candidates are planning to carry out their adventure training early this month. We understand there is a reference to this in the Village Pump page. D of E members were present at the May Fair, in their distinctive shirts, supporting the excellent efforts of the Corfe Castle Brownies in providing refreshments. Display boards were also set up on site and visitors were invited to 'Guess the Weight of the Rucksack'. The winner, Emma King, will join a D of E Purbeck Climbing Group, for a day next month. Whilst many of the Purbeck D of E Group live in the Village, there are others from the surrounding area. This Group is led, and positively encouraged, by PC Barry Ashdown, with the help of approximately 10 volunteer supporting leaders (VSL). The Scheme, which is non-competitive, offers an opportunity enabling young people to achieve and realise their objective and potential, through their efforts. It demonstrates the participants' commitment, skills learnt, such as team building and communication. The emphasis is on fun, in meeting the challenge, making new friends and through the Award, enriching their personal development. The Gold, Silver and Bronze Award programmes are of different lengths but the commitment is common to all levels. Expedition training, for some, is the fun part but the equipment can be costly. We are aiming to raise £7500 to purchase equipment such as tents, stoves, waterproofs, etc. Thank you to Mark and Laurice of The Castle Inn, for the purchase of a tent and to Headmaster, Nigel Beckett, for allowing us to use the fantastic meeting place. We would welcome any voluntary support and sponsorship from the community. Why not have a look at our website www.purbeckdofecentre.co.uk or take a stroll on a Sunday evening to see us between 5 and 8pm at The Corfe Castle First School The kettle is on! 66 67 Kimmeridge Village News What a wonderful combination: the beautiful, unique Jurassic coastline and an eminent photographer to help us to record the fantastic images we’ve always wanted to take! You will see that this event is being supported by Artsreach and I have been asked to organize the ticket sales. Remember, it is essential to book in advance and numbers are strictly limited so the sooner the better. Here is some information about the plans for the Workshop from Ben Osborne and I can give you more details if you phone me.

In this workshop we will start indoors with a brief illustrated introduction to landscape photography (based upon my extensive collection of images from all over the planet). This will end with a discussion of how to photograph the Jurassic coast and the range of subjects that the World Heritage Site offers for photographers – from fossil close-ups to big views.

Following this introduction and a short discussion about ‘kit’ we will head out to the beach and spend 2-3 hours photographing the local area (longer if the conditions are particularly favourable). We then return to base to download and discuss some of the images that we have created. At this stage we can also discuss any photographic issues that have cropped up during the day and can discuss the possibilities for presenting and sharing your images. This indoor session allows for immediate feedback from the practical photography experience and is much appreciated by participants. Having access to an indoor space gives us the necessary flexibility to respond to variable weather conditions – if it is pouring with rain we can spend more time indoors; if it is a spectacularly beautiful day we can make the most of the beach.

The workshop will be suitable for anyone interested in photography whether they use a mobile phone, compact camera, dSLR or HasselbladH4D!

76 77 21st Century Silage Making

Grass has been a bit thin on the ground this year. It was a (lovely) dry spring we had. The last time it rained, was on Easter Monday. The ground was saturated, because if you remember, it had started raining in the middle of January, after a month of snow. At Lytchett, we struggled to get our spring corn planted. At first, the ground was too wet, but after 10 days, it was too dry! The early drilled corn had to break through the hard baked soil, and the late drilled corn had to force itself round large clay knobs. And in May, grass stopped growing. That's enough about the weather.

We made silage in early June. I consider this to be my most important harvest time. It is the winter food for my cattle. There are areas in our country where corn can grow particularly well; and areas such as on my farm where the best crop that can be grown is grass. Silage making used to take several weeks, the machinery that we used to chop them blow the grass was hauled behind SWANAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL our largest tractor. In a good day, we might have been able to transport the grass from 20 acres of land to the silage pit. Today, however, most farmers Saturday 10th July 10am - 1pm will use a contractor to make the silage.

Saturday 14th August 10am - 1pm The size of the machinery that these people bring is immense. The mower arrived the day before we were due to make silage. Within six hours he had HOLME NURSERIES, WAREHAM cut 150 acres of grass. The following day, the rake arrived to make great rolls Saturday 24th July 10am - 1pm of grass across the field ready for the 500 hp self-propelled harvesting machine to pick up, chop up, and blow into the trailers. This huge machine, Saturday 28th August 10am - 1pm that costs as much as a cottage (not in Purbeck, of course, where cottages are considerably more expensive) is as different from the machine we used 20 years ago as a 40 tonne lorry is to a Smart car.

In one day this machine had growled and rumbled its way through 200 acres of grass. The grass was in the pit, albeit a bit light and the whole operation was finished by nine o'clock in the evening. It just remained to cover the grass with a plastic sheet, and to cover that with old tyres. The job was done by lunchtime on the third day. And now the rain has come, the new growth is starting, the crops have started to perk up, so here's hoping for a summer with both rain and sunshine.

So, if you had visited the Purbeck Products farmers market on the second Saturday of the month, at Swanage Middle School, you would have seen at least one very happy Purbeck farmer selling the most delicious organic beef. Beef that has been grown naturally on grass and silage for two years, slaughtered locally, and hung for three weeks. If you were not there I hope to see you on July 10th from 10 o'clock until 1 o'clock where you can buy the best food in Purbeck. PP
