The format and rules for both tournaments are the same. In the preliminary round, 12 teams are divided into three groups of four teams. Each team plays every other team in its group. The top two teams from each group plus the two best third placed teams will qualify for the quarterfinals. The remaining third placed team will be ranked ninth, and the three fourth placed teams will be ranked 10th to 12th according to the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) rules. After the conclusion of the preliminary round, a combined ranking table is produced based on the following criteria: • Position within group • Win/loss record • Goal difference • Goals scored The top eight teams from this combined ranking table advance to the quarterfinals. The pairings of teams for the quarterfinals will be decided by a draw. Each quarterfinal will contain one team from positions 1 to 4 in the combined ranking table, and one team from positions 5 to 8. A team cannot play another team from their group in the quarterfinals. The winners of the quarterfinals will qualify for the semifinals. The winners of the quarterfinals ranked 1 and 4 in the combined ranking table will play in semifinal 1, and the winners of the games ranked 2 and 3 will play in semifinal 2. The losers will be eliminated and will be ranked fifth to eighth according to the FIBA rules. The winners of the semifinals will play in the final for first and second place (gold medal game) and the losers will play in the bronze medal game for third and fourth place. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE FIBA BASKETBALL WORLD CUP AND THE MEN'S TOURNAMENT AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES The number of participating teams in the FIBA Basketball World Cup is 32. The format of the competition is different from the men's Olympic tournament. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE FIBA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WORLD CUP AND THE WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES The number of participating teams in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup is 16. The format of the competition is different from the women's Olympic tournament. CHANGES SINCE THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES The format of the preliminary round has changed from two groups of six teams, to three groups of four teams. To be crowned Olympic champion, a team must play six games - three in the group phase and three in the finals phase (quarterfinals, semifinals, gold medal game), instead of eight as in previous tournaments. Basketball is played by two teams of five players each. Each team attempts to score into the opponent's basket, and to prevent the other team from doing so. The ball may be passed, thrown, tapped, rolled or dribbled in any direction, subject to the restrictions laid down by the rules of the game. The playing court is a rectangular, flat, hard surface free from obstructions. For the main official FIBA competitions, the dimensions are 28m in length by 15m in width, measured from the inside edge of the boundary line. The height of the ceiling or the lowest obstruction must be at least seven metres. The ring is placed 3.05m above the ground. The game is played in four periods called quarters, with 10 minutes of actual playing time in each. There is a 24 second time limit for each ball possession, the clock will stop whenever a referee blows a whistle. Each team consists of five players on the field and seven on the bench. Their is no limit to the substitutions. If the regulation time ends in a tied score, overtime periods of five minutes are played until one team emerges as the winner. The scoring rules allow one, two or three points for a successful shot. One point is awarded for shots from the free throw line, two points are awarded for shots from all positions within the 6.75m line. Shots beyond the 6.75m line are awarded three points. Each player is allowed five personal fouls after which he/she is disqualified from that game, but he/she may be ejected earlier for misconduct, or a major flagrant foul. Tiebreak rules - Classification during and at the end of the preliminary round: Teams will be ranked based on the following criteria: 1. Win/loss record: two points for each game won, one point for each game lost (including lost by default) and zero points for a game lost by forfeit. 2. If two or more teams have the same win/loss record, the best record in head to head games between the tied teams, provided that all the tied teams have played one another, based on the following criteria: • Win/loss record in the games between them • Higher goal difference in the games between them • Higher number of goals scored in the games between them • Higher goal difference in all games in the group • Higher number of goals scored in all games in the group 3. If two or more teams have the same win/loss record, and all the tied teams have not played one another, based on the following criteria: • Higher goal difference in all games in the group • Higher number of goals scored in all games in the group 4. If at the end of the preliminary round a tie between two or more teams cannot be broken, a draw will take place to determine their final ranking in the group. If a tie during the preliminary round cannot be broken, the teams will share the same rank. - Classification in the combined ranking table: If two or three teams are involved in a tie for any of the places first to eighth in the combined ranking table that cannot be broken using the criteria listed above, a draw will be used to determine their rank. - Final standings: The four teams that do not qualify for the quarterfinals will be ranked ninth to 12th based on their position in the combined ranking table. The four teams eliminated in the quarterfinals will be classified for the fifth to eighth places according to their position in the combined ranking table. Penalties/disqualification rules Players or teams may be disqualified from a game. The provisions of the FIBA statutes, FIBA internal regulations and FIBA basketball rules will be applied.
