A Flock of Seagulls - May 5 As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single, "I Ran (So Far Away)," A Flock of Seagulls were one of the MTV video rotation staples of the new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement, A Flock of Seagulls were a little too robotic and arrived a little too late to be true new romantics, but their sleek dance-pop was forever indebted to the short-lived movement. The group benefited considerably from MTV's heavy rotation of the "I Ran" video in the summer of 1982. Mike Score's outrageous hair style is forever embedded in pop culture. Johnny Rivers - May 12 American rock artist Johnny Rivers has many hits including "Mountain of Love," "Poor Side of Town," and "Summer Rain." Rivers has had nine Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold over 30 million records. In 2015, Rivers was inducted into America's Pop Music Hall of Fame and continues to perform to sold out audiences. Gin Blossoms - May 19 Formed in 1987 in Tempe, Arizona, the Gin Blossoms are a pop/rock band known for their southwestern sound and dominating the alternative rock era in the '90s. With hits like "Hey Jealousy," "Found Out About You," and "Follow You Down," the Gin Blossoms have earned several platinum albums and a GRAMMY nomination. Little River Band - May 26 Little River Band is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1975 and named after a road sign for the Victorian township of Little River. They were the first Australian rock group to enjoy sustained commercial success in the United States. During their career the band have sold more than 25 million records and scored 13 American Top 40 hits. CZECH (Under the Direction of John Weaver) ABSTRACT This project opens space for looking at the world in a musical way where “jamming” with music through playing and listening to it helps one resist a more standardized and dualistic way of seeing the world. Instead of having a traditional dissertation, this project is organized like a record album where each chapter is a Track that contains an original song that parallels and plays off the subject matter being discussed to make a more encompassing, multidimensional, holistic, improvisational, and critical statement as the songs and riffs move along together to tell why an arts-based musical way of being can be a choice and alternative in our lives.

  • 2 to Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different
2 To Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different The context for difference This chapter aims to identify some of the bands that enjoyed chart success during the late 1970s and ’80s and identify their artistic traits by means of conversations with band members and those close to the bands. This chapter does not claim to be a definitive account or an inclusive list of innovative bands but merely a viewpoint from some of the individuals who were present at the time and involved in music, creativity and youth culture. Some of these individuals were in the eye of the storm while others were more on the periphery. However, common themes emerge and testify to the Scouse resilience identified in the previous chapter. Also, identifying objective truth is a difficult task, as one band member will often have a view of his band’s history that conflicts with that of other members of the same band. As such, it is acknowledged that this chapter presents only selective viewpoints. Trying something new: In what ways were the Liverpool bands creative and different? ‘Liverpool has always made me brave, choice-wise. It was never a city that criticized anyone for taking a chance.’ David Morrissey1 In terms of creativity, the theory underpinning this book which was stated in Chapter 1 is that successful Liverpool bands in the 1980s were different from each other and did not attempt to follow the latest local or national pop music trends. None of the bands interviewed falls into the categories of punk, disco or New Romantic, which were popular trends at the time.

Interview with Kevin Rankin - A Flock of Seagulls - Portland, Orego... http://www.mirp411.com/a-flock-of-seagulls/ [email protected] HOME INTERVIEWS REVIEWS PHOTOS EVENT CALENDAR NEWS EDITORIALS MIRP RADIO !! " Previous Next # Interview With Kevin Rankin – Drummer for A Flock of Seagulls – Portland, Oregon By Susan Welch | December 9th, 2017 | Written Interviews | Comments O! A Fock of Seagulls are an English new wave and synthpop band originally formed in Liverpool 1980. Everyone knows the song, “I Ran (I Ran So Far Away).” It was a staple in the 80s with heavy rotation on MTV, and brought back to life for the younger generation through video games, movies, and commercials. While “I Ran” is the song that saw the most commercial success for A Flock of Seagulls, they had other hits such as “Space Age Love Song” (1982), “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” (1982), and “The More You Live, the More You Love” (1984). In 1983, they won a grammy for the Best Rock Instrumental Performance for their song DNA. While they’ve only released #ve studio albums over the span of 35 years, they have never stopped making and playing music. Founder, and the only original member, Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards, and guitar) has kept this well loved band going, and they show no signs of stopping. I had the privilege of sitting down with Kevin Rankin, the current drummer for A Flock Of Seagulls. If only I had turned the recorder on during our hour long chat prior to the interview…Not only is he a very talented drummer, but he is an incredibly nice guy.
