The day trip began with a film rich in history about the origins of the park. The film was followed by a hands- on demonstration of firs, oil paintings, pots made from clay gathered at the St. Francis River, and clothing worn by the early settlers of the area. The tribe, which the history centers around, is known as the Casqui, an American Indian Village that inhabited the area during the expedition of in 1541 and is well documented in his chronicles. Residents were able to engage in an informal Q & A following the film and a hands-on demonstration. The next phase of the exhibit led the residents to a detailed timeline showing artifacts that had been unearthed at the park. Treasures included a Spanish glass bead enameled in a chevron of sunlight color, brass bells, preserved seeds of grain, handmade tools from wild deer and fish, and genuine head pots carved in detail of the Casqui, highlighting their tribal markers. To further add to the experience, we embarked on an outdoor trail walking the paths that led around the high mound of the Casqui Chief and highlighted the banks of the St. Francis River. This river once served as a source of the protective moat around the tribe. The residents also saw China Berry trees, which reminded one resident of her grandfather’s home, river cane, and other plants in bloom. We thank Mel Harvey and the staff at Parkin Archeological State Park for offering us an enriching educational experience and an inside look at the day in the life of a Casqui.

A Day at the Memphis Zoo Lions, and tigers and Three Rivers Residents and Staff, oh my! For our most recent excursion, the residents and staff of Three Rivers loaded up the buses and crossed the River to check out the Memphis Zoo. While at the zoo, residents were able to explore various exhibits and wildlife, such as the hot pink flamingos gathered at the stream, neon colored fish swimming in the bluest of blue water, snakes nestled in beds of leaves and limbs, and of course, the monkeys swinging around and snacking. The monkeys were definitely everyone’s favorite. The mini safari ended with a stop by Applebee’s of West Memphis where the residents took a break and enjoyed a delicious meal. We thank The Memphis Zoo and Applebee’s of West Memphis for their hospitality and help in making this trip one to remember for our residents.
