The Talabi Diabetes Research Study Group (TDRSG) is the research arm of the Talabi Center for Diabetes Studies. The Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria, through the support of a philanthropist, Mr Olumuyiwa Talabi, established the Talabi Center for Diabetes Studies (TCDS) in 2004. The goal of the TCDS is to provide comprehensive quality care for those with diabetes mellitus, as well as research and training opportunity. The TCDS is also involved in the global awareness campaign of the diabetes world. The Governor of Ogun State, Nigeria, Mr Gbenga Daniel performed the foundation laying ceremony of the Center at Ishara, Ogun State, Nigeria recently. TCDS has three components including a Community-based Clinical Complex for Field Studies situated at Isara; both a Clinical Research Complex and an Educational / Conferences Unit situated at the Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

The Talabi Diabetes Research Study Group (TDRSG) is presently involved in a Community based, cross sectional epidemiological study of type 2 diabetes in Sagamu and environment and eleven other research projects within the local communities of Sagamu / Ishara community and in the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching hospital.

The overall objectives of the studies are: •To identify new diabetics through community survey, •Conduct dietary and environmental studies with a view to modifying the Nigerian diet and the environment as a basis of stemming the tide of diabetes mellitus; •Explore prevention strategies of diabetes mellitus within local communities; •Early detection of diabetes mellitus and associated clinical conditions; •Prevention of complications relating to diabetes mellitus related in the community.

TDRSG will be holding a 2-day event to commemorate the World Diabetes Day (International Diabetes Federation / World Health Organization) on November 14 2005. Preceding the D-Day is an awareness campaign targeted at the public, which is to hold in the main markets of Ishara and Sagamu towns on November 11. The main event is a symposium on November 14 on diabetes with a theme: ‘Put Feet first, Prevent amputations’. Renowned Health Administrators, Physicians, Resident doctors, General Practitioners, all within and outside Ogun state, Nigeria are expected to participate in the symposium.
