14 LC 104 0074 House Resolution 1248 By: Representatives Roberts of the 155th, Ralston of the 7th, O`Neal of the 146th, Ramsey of the 72nd, Ehrhart of the 36th, and others A RESOLUTION 1 Commending Greg Maddux, recognizing him for his induction into the Baseball Hall of 2 Fame, and inviting him to be recognized by the House of Representatives; and for other 3 purposes. 4 WHEREAS, Greg Maddux is known to baseball fans in Atlanta and throughout the world 5 as a pitcher extraordinary skill and power and a superior ability to outthink his opponents and 6 anticipate results; and 7 WHEREAS, a second round pick in the 1984 major league baseball draft, he made his major 8 league debut in September, 1986, making him, at the age of 20, the youngest player in the 9 majors; and 10 WHEREAS, for 17 straight seasons, Maddux recorded 15 or more wins, the longest such 11 streak in major league baseball history; and 12 WHEREAS, many of his achievements include being an eight-time All-Star, a recipient of 13 18 Gold Glove awards and four Cy Young awards, and a member of the 1995 World Series 14 Champion Atlanta Braves; and 15 WHEREAS, Maddux, along with Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, pitched for over a decade 16 as the core of one of the best pitching staffs in the history of the game; and 17 WHEREAS, due to his outstanding career in baseball, Greg Maddux has been elected to the 18 Baseball Hall of Fame and will be inducted on July 27, 2014; and 19 WHEREAS, it is only fitting that Greg Maddox be commended for his fantastic 20 accomplishments. R. 1248 - 1 - 14 LC 104 0074 21 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that 22 the members of this body commend Greg Maddux and his contributions to baseball, 23 recognize him for his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and invite him to be 24 recognized by the House of Representatives at a date and time designated by the Speaker of 25 the House of Representatives. 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized 27 and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of the resolution to Greg Maddux. Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Platform , Vol. 3, No. 1 Mascots: Performance and Fetishism in Sport Culture Mary C. Daily (Boston College) Sport culture is something of great interest to citizens ranging from sociology scholars 1 to sports fans. The performance rituals that accompany sport include victory dances, school songs, cheers, and mascots. As Rick Minter, a mascot historian writes, “We all care about the symbols, nicknames, and legends of our club – mascots make them real again. They are a bit of our club that we can reach out and touch” (7). If we accept Minter’s conceptualization, what is the theoretical foundation that supports these representations? They make us laugh, we enjoy their athleticism, and kids love them; however, their lineage and purpose runs far deeper than their presence in the arena. This paper argues that mascot performances represent fetishized aspects of sport culture, and specifically, that such rituals embody the ability to relate to and influence the providence of a chosen athletic team. Arguably, the success of college and professional sport teams rests on their ability to claim triumph, and mascot performances are an integral part of that process to those who believe in their power. While sports fans enjoy mascots for their physicality as furry caricatures that dance along the sidelines, their significance is founded on a supernatural power relationship. The performance of mascots perpetuates their fetishized status in sports ranging from high school soccer to professional football.
