InterMarque Monthly, May 2016 PAGE 3 INTERMARQUE SPRING KICK OFF UPDATE KICK-OFF CHAIR JOHN ENGSTROM On a Clear Day you can see Osseo From Here! Well, it’s getting closer by the day. Get ’em fixed and polished and “Bob’s Your Uncle” they’re ready. Just don’t ask me about mine and we’ll all get along. But first a couple of things about the show. I have included a map (on the next page) of Osseo which shows how to get there from highway169. In short, you get off on 85th and then go take a right on 169. You will need to take a right turn on 1st Avenue N.W. which is the next street after the stop light. Go up 1st and turn at the entrance sign. Don’t forget a donation to the food shelf and a few bucks for the Girl Scouts People’s Choice Award voting buckets. This Saturday, at our breakfast meeting, I will be asking for volunteers to help out with the information and registration tent as well as people to hand out the goody bags and direct cars into the parking spots. The more volunteers we get 2016 SPONSOR CLUBS the less time everyone has to help out…See how nice that is. Lotus Owners Oftha North (LOON) • Alfa Romeo Owners I am going to ask each club for two volunteers (except for the Borgward Club Club, Stella del Nord Chapter • which only has two members) and will send out a sign up sheet for it. ABOVE: Mercedes-Benz Club members at JDC Motorsports with CEO and The Mercedes-Benz Club Twin Cities Section got a rare treat on Saturday, President, John Church. April 9th… a visit and tour of JDC Motorsports, winners of the Prototype Challenge class at the 2016 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.

JDC Motorsports is a motorsports management organization based in Eagan, Minnesota. A full service motorsports outfit, they maintain and manage cars that compete in various professional racing series. From Indy car development series like Pro Mazda Presented by Cooper Tires to the IMSA Prototype Lites series, the IMSA Continental SportsCar Challenge up to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the series that resulted from the merger of GRAND-AM Road Racing and the in 2014. JDC has their fingers in a lot of racing pies on any given weekend, on tracks throughout the United States and Canada. “WOW!” “AWESOME!” “A much bigger operation than I was expecting to see!” were just a few of the reactions when club members General view of one half of the JDC Motorsports entered JDC’s 24,000 square foot facility. Everyone was universally facility, 24,000 square feet total. impressed. My vision of a motor sports racing team headquarters would be more like a small town car dealership service department at best. Wrong, how about a fully equipped dream shop in a building the size of a Costco store? This place was so enormous, you could park four full length tractor / trailer semis with racing equipment and cars inside, at one end of the building, with plenty of room in the rest of the place for all the race cars. Chris and I arrived at 8:15am to help set up the “goodies”, all graciously provided by Mercedes-Benz Club members Jack & Susan

Everyone I spoke to that attended the event, thought it was way better than anything they had ever expected to see. In addition to the PC car destined for Long Beach, there were many other race cars throughout the building, from various road racing series, in different project stages. Lots to see! What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than to go for a drive and stop for a picnic at scenic Cherokee Park. This is a do-it-yourself affair, so bring your own food, beverages, plates, silverware, lawn chairs, grills, and a dish to share if you want. If it rains, it's cancelled.

InterMarque Monthly, May 2016 PAGE 8 Lotus LUNACY PHOTOS AND ARTICLE PROVIDED BY: Dave Lindemann

ABOVE: “It was rough.” Fellow LOON (Lotus Owners Oftha North) Tim Engel is very in touch with all things Lotus. Tim was aware of a Lotus Europa body sitting in a yard in Mound near where he used to live. He thought it had some front end damage but had never stopped to really inspect the car. Tim made contact with the owner thinking the body may be available because he knew of another person looking for a Europa body to use as a mold to make a V8 hot rod. It was learned that the body and "a bunch" of other Europa parts were available for sale. The other person didn't take any action on buying it so I thought "why don't I go and take a look at it?". I don't need another project but I hate to see a classic Lotus just sit and deteriorate. Tim and I visited with the owner and took a look at the car. It was rough. It turns out the car had been in an accident many years ago and the seller purchased it and let it sit outside. The chassis was there but the front "T" of the backbone is bent and the back of the chassis was frozen in the ground. The front of the body is gone. The white body was covered with mold and years of dirt and grime—but the rear bumper and tail lights were there and actually in pretty good shape. The “bunch of other parts” is what sold me—two doors with glass, gauges, switches, a seat, two center consoles, multiple suspension and brake parts, body molds, etc., etc— lots of stuff! The unfortunate thing is everything was filthy and all of the metal parts have surface rust. I rented a truck and a number of fellow LOONs came out to help load The chassis was there but the front "T" of the backbone is bent and the back of the chassis everything and haul it to my shop. The first thing I had to do was clean was frozen in the ground. CONT. PAGE 10 >>>

InterMarque Monthly, May 2016 PAGE 9 LOTUS LUNACY CONT. FROM PAGE 9 the body to see what was under all of that grime. Using a bucket of hot water with bleach, car wash soap and using a Scotch Brite sponge a lot of it came off. Then I tried a little wet sanding and the body started looking like a Europa again. So, now what? My plan is to clean and restore the parts and make them available to other Europa owners to help them finish their projects. But what about the body? The back half is actually in good condition but the front is a mess. Fellow LOON John Eaton to the rescue! Some of the parts as found in the sellers shed. John came across a craigslist ad for the front half of a similar vintage Lotus Europa—what are the odds of finding the front of a Europa? The problem was it was located in Durango, Colorado…about 1300 miles away—bummer. I contacted the seller, he sent some more pictures and we agreed on a price. Time for a road trip! I was able to borrow a fellow LOON's 3/4-ton pickup (the 3rd time he has allowed me to use it for some crazy Lotus trip—REALLY nice!). I decided to go solo because my plan was to complete the task as quickly as More parts stacked in my shop possible and I didn't want to put anyone else through endless hours of driving. I left my house at 6 am on Wednesday, picked up the truck and drove non-stop until 11 pm when I had to stop and rest my eyes. Unfortunately, it was on a mountain pass, it was cold, and the backseat was not very comfortable so I only "slept" for about an hour. I arrived at the seller’s first thing in the morning. Super nice person, though not a Lotus guy. He came to own the body when someone dropping off scrap metal at his recycling business asked if he wanted a fiberglass body,

Here is the top after washing and scrubbing...... otherwise they were going to junk it. He looked at it and thought it was too nice to scrap so he took it—lucky for me. The seller helped me load the body into the bed of the truck and strap it down. I hit the road again by mid-morning. The return trip started out beautiful with lots of sun and some great scenery. I drove to Ogallala, NE when I finally had to stop at a hotel to get some sleep. Up and on the road again Friday morning by 7 am only to deal with constant cross winds and
