Match background

Two clubs with plenty of UEFA Champions League pedigree meet at the Stade Louis II as Monaco welcome Shakhtar Donetsk for the first leg of their play-off tie. • The sides have made 24 UEFA Champions League group appearances between them, although Monaco are bidding to feature for the first time in three seasons while their Ukrainian opponents have not missed out since 2016/17. Previous meetings • This is the sides' first meeting since their only previous tie, in the 1979/80 UEFA Cup first round. Shakhtar were 2-1 winners in the home first leg in Donetsk, Mykhaylo Sokolovsky scoring both goals, but Monaco turned the tie round with a 2-0 second-leg victory thanks to two goals in five second-half minutes from Delio Onnis (49) and Christian Dalger (53). Form guide Monaco • Third in in 2020/21, five points behind champions LOSC Lille, Monaco are aiming to reach the group stage for the tenth time and the first since 2018/19. • Monaco's last UEFA Champions League campaign, three years ago, was also their most recent foray into European football before this season. In 2018/19 they finished fourth in Group A behind Borussia Dortmund, Atlético de Madrid and Club Brugge, picking up only one point from their six matches (D1 L5). • That extended Monaco's winless European run to 14 games (D3 L11), since a 3-1 home victory against Dortmund in the quarter-final second leg in April 2017. • Niko Kovač's side ended that long sequence without a victory in this season's third qualifying round, winning 2-0 at Sparta Praha before a 3-1 home success. • This is Monaco's third UEFA Champions League play-off. They lost to Valencia in 2015/16 (1-3 a, 2-1 h) before beating Villarreal the following season (2-1 a, 1-0 h) – making it three wins in their four play-off matches. • Runners-up in 2004, Monaco have also reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals on three further occasions, in 1993/94, 1997/98 and 2016/17. • Aside from their two games against Shakhtar, Monaco's only other fixtures against a Ukrainian club came in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup second round, George Weah scoring the only goal of their tie against Chornomorets Odesa 14 minutes into the second leg at the Stade Louis II. Shakhtar • Shakhtar's run of four successive Ukrainian Premier League titles was ended in 2020/21 as they finished second to great rivals Dynamo Kyiv, ending the season 11 points adrift in second place. Defeat in the Ukrainian Cup quarter- finals ensured the Pitmen finished without a trophy for the first time since 2014/15. • That meant Shakhtar started the 2021/22 European campaign in the third qualifying round, where they beat Genk 2- 1 in both Belgium and Ukraine. • This is only Shakhtar's second UEFA Champions League play-off. They defeated Rapid Wien 3-2 on aggregate in 2015/16 (1-0 a, 2-2 h), Marlos scoring in both legs. • Shakhtar's 2020/21 European campaign started in the UEFA Champions League group stage where, despite wins away (3-2) and home (2-0) against Real Madrid, they finished third in Group B behind the Spanish side and Borussia Mönchengladbach having picked up only two more points, although they did edge out eventual Italian champions Internazionale. A team coached by Luís Castro then overcame Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 (2-0 a, 1-0 h) before losing to Roma in the last 16 (0-3 a, 1-2 h). • Castro was replaced after two years as Shakhtar coach by Roberto De Zerbi, who joined from Sassuolo in the summer. • UEFA Champions League quarter-finalists in 2010/11, Shakhtar are aiming to reach the group stage for the 16th time and have been eliminated in the group stage on 11 of the previous 15 occasions, including the last three. • Shakhtar are without a win in their last four games against French clubs (D2 L2), most recently drawing away (2-2) and home (1-1) with Lyon in the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League group stage. They have won four of their eight games in France (D1 L3), the last success a 2-0 victory at Toulouse in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League group stage. Links and trivia
