Sailing Basics

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall Key Components:

• Mast • Main Sail • Sheets •

• Daggerboard #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall What are the

Points of Sail? #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall Close Hauled The most difficult thing to be able to do well when sailing. A boat is sailing close hauled when its are pulled in tightly and it is sailing as close to the wind as it can, without entering the “no go zone”.

Close Reach This is an upwind angle between close hauled and a beam reach.

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall Sailing Close to the Wind

Close Hauled 45° from Wind Close Reach 50-80° from Wind

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall Wind

Beam Reach This is a course steered at right angles to the wind on either port or starboard . This is a precise point of sail, with sails put out at roughly 45 degrees

Broad Reach This is a down wind angle between beam reach and running

Running Sailing in the same direction as the wind. The mainsail is let out all the way and the jib maybe moved to the opposite side from the mainsail or replaced with a sail. #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall Sailing Across the Wind Beam Reach Broad Reach 90° from Wind 120-160° from Wind

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall Sailing Downwind Training Run Run 180° from Wind 170° from Wind Goose-Wing Jib

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall What are the 5 Essentials of Sail?

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall 5 ESSENTIALS

• BALANCE • TRIM • DAGGERBOARD • SAIL SETTING • COURSE MADE GOOD

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall What do the 5 Essentials of Sail do?

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall With little effort they help you…

• Sail FASTER

• Sail EFFICIENTLY

• Sail SAFER

FAST – EFFICIENT - SAFE #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall BALANCE

Use the weight of crew and helm to BALANCE the boat

A FLAT BOAT - IS A FAST BOAT

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall BALANCE

Flat and Fast Heeled and Slow

FAST – EFFICIENT - SAFE #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall TRIM Use the weight of crew and helm to TRIM the boat

Fast and Dry Slow and Wet

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall TRIM correct you don’t get wet… TRIM wrong you’re in the pond…

FAST – EFFICIENT - SAFE #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall DAGGERBOARD

A sidewind moves the boat sideways across the water - LEEWAY

A SAIL makes a side wind wind push the boat FORWARD

A daggerboard grips the water and prevents LEEWAY

It also creates DRAG which slows you down

Reduce drag by LIFTING when on a RUN or broad reach

Lifting the RUDDER slightly can reduce further drag

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall DAGGERBOARD Position

Daggerboard Up Daggerboard Down

FAST – EFFICIENT#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall - SAFE SAIL SETTING

A sail produces its maximum POWER when at a certain ANGLE to the wind.

That angle is quite CRITICAL and you need lots of PRACTICE to get it right.

#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall Remember

The correct position of the sails is at a certain angle to the wind not to the boat.

Each time the boat changes direction, so the sails must be sheeted in or out to maintain that position. FAST – EFFICIENT - SAFE #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall FLAPPY ISN’T HAPPY…

…TIGHT IS RIGHT #SkillsForLife @4thHeswall Course Made Good shortest, or quickest, distance between two points

The course made good (CMG), is the direction a craft is traveling, independent of the direction the craft is pointing This is called the heading of the craft Counteracting drift from wind, tide and sea state

FAST – EFFICIENT#SkillsForLife @4thHeswall - SAFE SUMMARY

The 5 Essentials, are the 5 things, which, if you concentrate on them will make you sail efficiently, therefore faster and safer.

The sailor who gets the 5 essentials right for most of the time will certainly win the race.

The rudder is NOT one of the 5 essentials, if you are always having to pull or push the tiller to keep the boat straight, then you are doing something wrong.
