She told (Michael) Conor Cook and me that this day coincides with the blooming of bridal wreath or Spiraea, which is certainly the case in Toronto every year. I first met Jean when I taught linguistics at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where she was Henrietta Harvey Professor and then later Professor Emerita after teaching anthropology there for over four decades. -

Briggs Department of Anthropology Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John’s NL A1B 3X9 Historical developments in Utkuhiksalik phonology; 5/16/04 page 1 of 36 1 Introduction* Utkuhiksalik has been analysed as a subdialect of Natsilik within the Western Canadian Inuktun (WCI) dialect continuum (Dorais, 1990:17; 41). 1 While Utkuhiksalik has much in com- mon with the other Natsilik subdialects, the Utkuhiksalingmiut and the Natsilingmiut were his- torically distinct groups (see §1.1). Today there are still lexical (see §1.2) and phonological dif- ferences between Utkuhiksalik and Natsilik. The goal of this paper is to highlight the main phonological differences by describing the Utkuhiksalik reflexes of Proto-Eskimoan (PE) *c, *y, and *D. 1.1 Overview of dialect relations2 The traditional territory of the Utkuhiksalingmiut (the people of the place where there is soapstone) lay between Chantrey Inlet and Franklin Lake. 6 "Why Don't You Kill Your Baby Brother?" The Dynamics of Peace in Canadian Inuit Camps Jean L. Briggs The title, '"Why Don't You Kill Your Baby Brother?" may come as a shock as the heading for an article about peace. Yet, as Jean Briggs shows, the teasing of children among the Inuit has a role in preparing them for a community life that is generally peaceful. We use the term generally because Inuit culture has been far from entirely peaceful. "Murder was known in many—perhaps all—Inuit societies, and in some it seems to have been a very frequent occurrence," writes Briggs. Today, too, even when camp life is tranquil, suspicion and fear are not far from the surface. The dynamics of peace and conflict management include such techniques as joking, reassurance, discretion, and isolation. What emerges very powerfully from Briggs's empathic treatment of Inuit life, however, is that peace may have a dark side. One would wish that a small community of closely related individuals would be held together by perception of mutual interest and the love and respect that emerges from long association. These qualities are abundant among the Inuit. But it appears that they are not sufficient. In their human, and therefore imperfect world, the peace is also maintained by institutions that generate (and yet contain) fear, anger, and distrust. How common is this pattern? It may be very general. Certainly, in this volume, we have several examples: Thomas Gregor examines the fear and antagonism that is linked to peaceful, intervillage politics among the Mehinaku of Brazil (Chapter 10); Clayton Robarchek looks at the anxiety that lies behind Semai harmony (Chapter 7); and Robert Dentan explores the ambivalent relationships of members of peaceful "enclaved" societies (Chapter 3). -

FRONTLIST Nunavut Arctic College has been publishing for almost three decades. Our press predates the political creation of Nunavut, but not the historical reality of a distinct Inuit land. We have been around for some time, yet we are new on the landscape of Canadian publishing. Most people across Canada (and the world) are not familiar with our books. There is a good reason for this. Our books were purposefully published to serve students, Willem Rasing teachers, and community members in the Eastern Arctic. These works were not intended for wide distribution, enviable sales, or awards; they exist as urgent, at times rough-hewn manifestations of intimate and collaborative efforts to archive the ISBN: 978-1-897568-40-8 knowledge and history of unique generations. The narrators in our pages are often $27.95 Inuit who weathered the bewildering movement from the land to static settlements in May 2016 the mid-20th century, and those who entered residential schools. 6” x 9” | 312 pages Notwithstanding our territorial obligation to date, our work has benefitted from the Trade paperback engagement and initiative of outsiders. A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology Memorial University of Newfoundland August 2016 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador Abstract The focus of this dissertation is on the relationships between the Innu people of Labrador and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, through the practices of production of their respective places: Nitassinan and Labrador. I argue that Nitassinan and Labrador are different places, which co-exist uneasily, sometimes in open opposition. These places are product of an assemblage of practices and relations of human and non-human persons and other agents. I centre my analysis in the process of forest co-management of Forest District 19a (Labrador/Nitassinan) between the Innu Nation and the provincial government in order to explore the intersections of these two places in the context of the current relationship between the Innu people and the provincial government, in a milieu that continues to be colonial. While co-management processes are often considered to be a way of empowerment for aboriginal people, I argue that the co-management process analysed here primarily reinforced and facilitated the types of practices of place that produced Labrador. However, amidst these practices, the Innu people and, in institutional terms, the Innu Nation, were able to carry on some practices of place that allowed for the continuation of the production of Nitassinan.
