The beautiful, south Georgia college offers undergraduate degree work leading to the Associate in Applied Science, the Associate Arts, the Bachelor of Arts in 13 major programs and the Bachelor of Science in six major programs. It o ffers the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the Bachelor of Science in Education in 10 major programs, the Bachelor of Business Administration in six major pro grams, the Bachelor of Fine Arts in six major programs, and the Bachelor of Music in two major programs. Graduate degrees offered are the Master of Education in eight major programs, the Master of Arts with majors in English, history and mathematics, the Master of Science with majors in psychology and sociology, the Master of Business Administration, the Master of Music Education and the Education Specialist in five major programs. A special act of the Georgia Legislature established the institution of higher learning in 1906. It was not until 1911, however, that the state ap propriated $30,000 for one building and equipment. The city of Valdosta, enthused over the idea of having a college in their city, gave a campus of 60 acres and $50,000 in money. In 1912, the future of the institution was assured when the Legislature granted it adequate annual appropriation for maintenance. In 1922, the school’s name was changed to Georgia State Womans College and a four-year program leading to the bachelor’s degree was authorized. In 1950, the Board of Regents made the college coeduca tional and also changed the name to Valdosta State College. 4 Valdosta State College President Hugh C. Bailey

Valdosta State athletics was the beneficiary of unparal leled support when Dr. Hugh C. Bailey became the col lege’s sixth president on July 1, 1978. The 54-year-old Berry, Ala., native has been instrumental in the tremendous advances VSC has made in the last four years in its total athletic program. His latest contribution has been the enthusiasm with which he has supported the introduction of football to the campus. Dr. Bailey considers athletics to be an integral part of the overall picture of Valdosta State and stays completely informed concerning developments in the entire athletic program. Dr. Bailey came to VSC from Francis Marion College in Florence, S.C., where he was vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. He went to Francis Marion from Samford University in Birmingham where he joined the faculty of the Department of History and Political Science in 1953. He was at Samford for 22 years, the last five as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He earned the A.B. degree from Samford in 1950 and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Alabama in 1951 and 1954 respectively. He is a member of numerous civic and professional organizations and has published more than 25 articles in various professional journals. He is also the author of six books. Dr. Bailey is married to the former Ahleida Joan Seever of Mobile, Ala., and has two daughters, Debra Jane and Laura Joan.

AthleticBill GrantDirector %

Bill Grant, in his 25th year at Valdosta State College, has been the school’s athletic director since 1970 and in that capacity handles the business affairs of the athletic department. A native Valdostan, Grant coached baseball at VSC for eight years and directed the 1965 team to the school’s first conference title. He turned over the baseball job to Tom my Thomas in 1968. In addition to his teaching duties in the physical education department, he is also the school’s golf coach. He is an avid golfer, playing the game to a one- handicap. An outstanding high school athlete at Valdosta High School, Grant was the on the undefeated 1948 team which won the state championship. He received a scholarship to the University of Georgia to play football, but a broken ankle early in his sophomore year curtailed a promising college career. Grant received the B.S. degree from Georgia, and after four years in the Air Force, he at tended George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., where he received the Master of Arts degree in 1958. He coached at Valdosta High for two years before joining the VSC faculty. Grant is married to the former Susan Mercer of Moultrie and lives a two-iron from the col lege’s new physical education complex. Valdosta State College 5 Head Coach Jim Goodman

He’s glad he came. He accomplished more than anybody had a right to expect in his first year on the job. But he wasn’t satisfied with his first year’s work. Jim Goodman in the late fall of 1981 accepted the tremen dous challenge of starting an intercollegiate football pro gram at Valdosta State. Less than 10 months after he came on the job, he sent a group of inexperienced players onto the field against a veteran Mississippi College team. The Blazers lost that game, 28-13, but the team served notice with its hard-nosed style of play that it didn’t in tend to be a doormat of the Gulf South Conference. That was verified the next week when the upstart Blazers stunn ed GSC foe Troy State, 24-21, in Valdosta to the delight of 9300 first time fans. As the newspaper account of the game stated: “The football Blazers took their act to the Valdosta community, and they were accepted.” As the season progressed, Goodman and his club rode the waves of ecstacy and agony. And when the first season was history in late November, the final ledger read 5-5-1. It was indeed a much better record than anybody had predicted. But Goodman wasn’t satisfied. Jim Goodman is a winner, and while he agreed with the media that it would be tough to win a game in his first year, he constantly told his players that he expected to win every game. He worked extremely hard. He worked his young coaching staff extremely hard. He worked his players extremely hard. The results were very satisfying, but Goodman wasn’t satisfied. “Yes, we have a great deal to be proud of from our first year,” Goodman said. “But we have so far to go before we’re a quality football team in the Gulf South Conference. We started out crawling and we learned to walk last year. We even ran on occasion. We’ve got to remember how we ran because to keep up in this league you’ve got to run flat out all the time.” Goodman has not stood still since he arrived on the Valdosta State scene in December 1981. He is an excellent recruiter and a sound organizer. He has hired excellent coaches and has been given first class facilities by a most supportive administration. Valdosta State’s decision to enter the Gulf South Conference was a sound one, Goodman believes, even though it makes the initial challenge even greater. “Being in a conference is a big plus in every area,” he said. “ It’s a very tough league in all sports and especially tough in football.” Goodman, who celebrated his 31st birthday in May, has packed a lot of experience in 10 years of coaching. He graduated from the in 1973 and began his coaching career at Vanguard High School in Ocala, Fla., where he was an assistant for two years. He received his master’s degree from the University of North Alabama and coached there from 1976-79, directing the junior varsity to two undefeated seasons. He became head coach and athletic director at Marion Military Institute (an Alabama junior college) in 1979 and led his two teams to 8-3 and 8-2 records. His first team won the Wool Bowl in Roswell, N.M., and finished 14th in the final junior college national poll. His second team was ranked 12th in the last juco poll. Goodman joined the Air Force Academy staff in the spring of 1981, coaching receivers and coordinating the passing game during spring drills. In the fall of 1981 he coached the outside linebackers before becoming the first Valdosta State football coach in December of that year. Goodman and his wife Jennie, who is a registered pharmacist, are the parents of two children, Jeff, 5 and Nancy, 2. 6 Valdosta State College Valdosta State College 7 Defensive Coordinator Jim Berryman

Jim Berryman was given a clear cut assignment when he came on the job last spring — build a competitive defen sive unit by Sept. 10, 1983. That’s the date of the opening game this fall, and Berryman faces a tough challenge. The Blazers’ young defenders were at the bottom in most defensive statistics in 1982, but some progress was made. The defense received much of the recruiting attention, and Berryman inherited a solid nucleus on which to begin con struction of a respectable stop ’em crew. Berryman, 32, came to Valdosta State from Troy State where he had worked with the offensive line for three years. He was a successful high school coach at McAdory High School in Birmingham, leading the 1979 team to the school’s only undefeated regular season. Berryman was an all-American offensive tackle at Livingston University in 1972 and played on the 1971 national championship team and the 1972 runner-up. He graduated from Livingston in 1972 and received his master’s degree in physical education that same year. A Birmingham native, Berryman is married and he and his wife Patsy have two children, Jillian, 4, and Jay, 1.

Offensive Coordinator Larry riesler

Moving the football was seldom a problem for the 1982 Blazers, and a major reason for VSC’s offensive success was offensive coordinator Larry Nesler. Valdosta State’s passing game quickly gained a feared reputation among Blazer opponents, and at the season’s end VSC had tied or broken 10 passing and pass receiving records. While Nesler was justly proud of the Blazers’ aerial at tack last season, he wants his offense to become more balanced in 1983 and spent many hours in spring drills toward that end. The Booneville, Miss., native came to Valdosta State in the spring of 1982 from Northeast Louisiana University where he coached for two seasons. Before going to NLU he coached the defensive backs at Northeast Mississippi Junior College for two seasons. In addition to his coaching and recruiting chores, Nesler also is an instructor in the physical education department. Nesler, 26, is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and received his master’s degree from Northeast Louisiana. He is single. 8 Valdosta State College Defensive Ends, Linebackers Kenneth Hand

Kenneth Hand spent much of the 1982 season working with a defensive secondary which because of injuries and position shifts changed from week to week. As a result the Blazer secondary never found the con sistency which is so vital to those positions. But by the season’s end, Hand could be very happy with the play of two freshmen who had been thrown into battle before they were ready and survived. Cornerback Jimmy Francis and safety Timmy Massey were playing outstanding defense by the end of the year, and Francis was a second team all conference selection. This season Hand will work with the defensive ends and linebackers as Valdosta State seeks to improve a much maligned 1982 defense. Hand, 31, is a Griffin native who joined the Blazer staff in June of 1982, coming from Enter prise, Ala., where he coached the defensive secondary at Enterprise High School for three seasons. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Livingston University and coached there for two seasons. Hand and his wife Phyllis have one daughter, Laura Faye.

Offensive Line Cliff Fussell

One of the most pleasant surprises form 1982 was the outstanding play of the offensive line, especially from a pass protection standpoint. The man behind that forward wall was Cliff Fussell, an extremely tough taskmaster on the practice field who has the ability to get the most from his players. Fussell was fortunate in that injuries were not a serious problem during the year and he was able to keep basically the same group working together. And the results were ex cellent. Junior tackle Mark Catano was a second team all conference choice and was a Kodak all-American in the col lege division, becoming Valdosta State’s first football all- American. A native of Ocilla, Fussell played college football at the University of Southern Mississippi where he received his bachelor’s degree. He did some graduate work at Auburn and completed work on his master’s at VSC last spring. Fussell, 30, has been offensive coordinator and strength coach at three Alabama high schools since 1975. In addition to his coaching and recruiting duties, he coordinates the off-season weight program for the football team. He is single.

Valdosta State College 9 Defensive Line Calvin R

Calvin Rackley’s first real taste of college coaching was a bit frustrating last season as he watched one defensive lineman after another go down with injuries serious enough to limit or prohibit playing time. Consequently he was forced to play musical chairs at the down linemen positions much of the year. A good recruiting year and some position shifts have given Rackley more to work with, and he saw reason for more optimism during spring drills. Rackley, a native of Camilla, played college football at Marion Military Institute where he was a junior college all- American at defensive tackle, and at Jacksonville State where he was a member of two national playoff teams. He was a student coach at Jax State in the spring of 1982 before coming to Valdosta State in time for fall practice last year. He received his undergraduate degree in health and recreation from JSU and is working on his master’s at VSC. Rackley, 23, was married on the weekend of the VSC-Jacksonville State game last fall. His wife Wendy is a makeup consultant.

Secondary Eric Schumann

Eric Schumann joined the VSC staff in time for spring practice last year and turned his attention to the young Blazer secondary which had its problems in 1982. Those positions look much improved for 1983 due to ex perience and some solid recruits, and Schumann expects capable play out of the secondary, especially at the cor ners where he is primarily assigned. Schumann, 28, brings a solid background to VSC, hav ing played four years as a defensive back at Alabama. Dur ing his stay the Tide won four championships and one national title. The Blue Island, 111., native began his coaching career at McAdory High School in Birmingham where he worked with receivers and the defensive secondary for four years. Last season he was at Troy State where he coached the outside linebackers. Schumann, who is single, has received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Alabama and is doing additional graduate work at Valdosta State.

10 Valdosta State College Tight Ends, Receivers Tommy Macon

Tommy Macon had a good year in 1982, coaching the receivers in Valdosta State’s pass oriented offense. Eight different tight ends and wide receivers caught passes last season as Macon used all of the talent at his disposal. The Blazers’ top two catchers, wide receivers Carl Arm strong and Kelvin Sheppard, caught 92 balls between them, 12 for touchdowns. Armstrong was a first team all conference selection after catching 61 passes for 1028 yards, both new GSC records. Macon came to Valdosta State in January 1982 from Opelika High School in Alabama where he coached basket ball and the defensive secondary in football for three seasons. The Dalton native was a standout performer at Jackson ville State University where he started at strong safety in 1977 and 1978 and at defensive end in 1979. The 1977 team lost the national championship game in the Pioneer Bowl, and Jacksonville State won the GSC title all three years Macon was a starter. Macon, 26, graduated from JSU in 1979 and completed work on his master’s degree as VSC last spring. He is single.

Defensive Ends Ted Suttle

The newest addition to the Blazer coaching staff is 26-year-old Ted Suttle, a former standout tight end at Troy State where he was a member of the 1976 Gulf South Con ference championship team. Suttle comes to VSC from Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer, Ala., where he coached the offensive line and the kicking game in football for two seasons. An all-round athlete, Suttle played football, basketball and baseball at Foley (Ala.) High School, making all-county and all-region teams in all three sports. Suttle has a big responsibility this season, rebuilding the Blazers’ defensive end corps which was a weak link in the defensive scheme in 1982. A 1980 graduate of Troy State, Suttle is married to the former Theresa Jerkins of Atmore, Ala., also a Troy State graduate. He is working on his master’s degree at Valdosta State.

Valdosta State College 11 Athletic Trainer Jim Mad ale no

An added bonus that the new football program at Valdosta State gave the entire athletic program was a full time athletic trainer. Before football, the various sports had to rely on students or coaches to handle the important train ing chores. Now Valdosta State has Jim Madaleno, a fully certified athletic trainer who has proven himself invaluable to the total athletic program. Madaleno came to VSC in time for spring practice in 1982 and has since instituted and excellent training program. He maintains and staffs two fully equipped training rooms, one in the football complex and another in the physical education complex. He has recruited a very capable staff of student trainers and teaches a course in athletic train ing as a part of the physical education curriculum. Before coming to VSC, Madaleno was an assistant trainer at Florida State University, work ing primarily with football. The Dearborn, Mich., native graduated from Michigan State Univer sity Where he was a student trainer for four years. He received a graduate assistantship to Florida State and earned his master’s degree in move ment science in 1981. Madaleno, 25, is single.

18 Valdosta State College 1983 Outlook

The baby learned to walk in 1982. It fell down a lot and picked up a lot of bruises along the way, but before the year was over the baby didn’t need any help. Now it must learn to run. The baby is the still new Valdosta State College football program which premiered very successfully in the fall of 1982, finishing 5-5-1 while playing in the toughest Division II conference in America. For Coach Jim Goodman, his staff and his players, the break even record will be a tough act to follow. For one thing the element of sur prise is gone. For another the conference is even tougher with the ad dition of West Georgia College, the defending Division III national champions. And for another the Blazers lost both ends of a dynamic and record-setting passing duo. But there are some positive aspects as VSC prepares for its second year of intercollegiate football. For one thing the Blazers had what Goodman thinks was an outstanding recruiting season. For another the all important depth situation appears to be much improved. And for another the returning players know what to expect. “It’s going to be extremely tough again this year to win,” Good man said. “We open with two traditionally tough conference teams so we’re going to have to get ready right away. The players know they had better report in shape because there will be little time for condi tioning once we start fall practice.” In contrast to the spring of 1982, Goodman and his staff learned a great deal more about their football team in the spring of ’83, primari ly because most of the players had been in the program for a year. “At least we won’t be starting from scratch this August,” Good man said. “We accomplished a good deal in the spring. We found a lot of players best position. We improved defensively, but we are still by no means a good defensive team. None of our young quarter backs really took charge, and that position is of course a major concern. “Our depth is better, but it too still has a long way to go. Actually, almost everything is better but you must remember where we’re try ing to go. We have by no means turned the corner.” Everybody applauded the baby for learning to walk. Now everybody is anxiously waiting for the baby to run.

Valdosta State College 19 The Offense The quarterback situation makes what was the strong point of last year’s team a definite question mark in 1983. Five starters plus kicking specialist Brad Bauer return, but the middle of the offensive line, tight end and the quarterback spot must be rebuilt.

His 222 yard rushing in eight games was third on the squad and his five rushing touchdowns led all rushers. He also caught 16 passes for 290 yards and two more scores. Sophomores Alex McKinnie and Mike Smolchek will be joined by eight freshmen recruits, including Joe Reese from Newnan and Pernell Bee from Valdosta. Fullback is perhaps the deepest position on the team with senior Henry Chubb and sophomore Jerome Jackson returning. The twosome divided playing time last year with Chubb leading the team in rushing with 475 yards. Sophomore Glenn Guthrie and freshmen Max Vickers from Douglas and John Talley from Leesburg, Fla., will add even more depth.

The 1982 Blazer defenders were young, small and inexperi enced. Throw in several injuries at critical positions early in the year and it’s easy to see why VSC’s defense was at the bottom of the league. Defense received major attention in the spring and great improvement was shown. Time will tell just how much improvement was made.
