Summary: Melodrama set at various points along the contemporary East Coast of the U.S. Two hardened veteran Navy petty officers (Nicholson and Young) escort a recruit (Quaid), sentenced for thieving, from Virginia to prison in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and allow him one last wild night of freedom. They come to realize that they are as much prisoners of their world as he is of his.
