Page 2 of 48 An extract from the History Archives… Goldhanger Gas Lamps

Today there are three very similar Victorian gas lamps in the village, but as there has never been a mains gas supply, what is their history?

Our paper archive has a copy of a plan from the early 1900s to bring mains gas to Goldhanger along the Maldon Road. At that time the distribution of gas reached the Mill Beach caravan sites, however further installation was probably suspended due to WW-1. The Goldhanger Road, from Heybridge to the caravan sites, enjoyed gas street lighting for the next 50 years, and presumably domestic gas has been available along that road ever since. Strangely, electric street lighting still reaches the Osea Road caravan site.

Just before the Queen was due to visit Maldon in 1971, Maldon Council decided that the gas lights had to go to make the town appear more “modern”, and all the gas lights were quickly replaced with new electric street lighting. The old gas lanterns and posts were ignominiously stacked up in huge piles and visible for several years in a Maldon Council yard on the Causeway ….

Yours truly enquired many times if one could be purchased, and was finally invited to bid for one at an auction. The council did not advertise the event and only a handful of bidders turned up, and I and several others were permitted to buy one lamp each for about £5! Presumably two other Goldhanger residents also acquired theirs at that time, as three of these lamp posts made it to Goldhanger where they remain.

Sadly the most ornate ones, which appear in old photos of Maldon High Street were at the bottom of the pile and couldn’t be accessed, so we had no choice but to purchase the accessible plain ones with square copper tops. They even came complete with the clockwork mechanism that turned the light on and off each day using a pilot light.

Of course we still have no gas supply in the village, but bottled gas is readily and competitively available for cooking as The Chequers testifies.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday October 4th at 7.30.p.m. in the Village Hall. The speaker will be Maz Keenan and she will be telling us all about the work of FARLEIGH HOSPICE. Please bring a single stem flower from your garden if you want to take part in the ‘flower of the month’ competition.

“HEAD”…..< “TAIL”……< “LEG”……. “FEELER”…..< “EYE!” The Village Hall was the venue for our annual beetle drive in September and , judging by the shouting, we might all have been competing for the Town Hall Clock! The hall was full of members and guests shaking dice at an alarming rate to complete their beetles. Then the fish and chip suppers arrived and we all relaxed for a while . Felice was obviously the fastest ‘mover and shaker’ and well-deserved her prize at the end of the evening. Our thanks to Pam who always organises the event so calmly and efficiently. Special thanks to all the members who provided lovely home-made cakes for our TEA ROOM at the Gala weekend. Our teams worked hard to make the two days most successful and customers enjoyed their refreshments as they watched the various entertainments going on around the marquees. Many thanks to all involved. September was particularly busy as we also went by coach on our theatre outing to see JOSEPH and his AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT at the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend. The production was enjoyed by all and the innovative interpretations were, indeed, amazing. I, for one, did not expect to see Elvis as Pharoah, nor ‘Jeremy Corbyn’ as Jacob. What larks! October 12th is the date for our ANNUAL DINNER AT THE CHEQUERS. Please make sure you have your name on the board if you wish to attend. The cost is £13.50 per head. Page 14 of 48 GOODBYE TO SUMMER

The flowers have lost their first youthful blush, Blackberries adorn the bramble bush Along the country lane Whilst migrating birds prepare To fly south again. Time to kiss the summer goodbye.

The orchards are laden with apples, pears and plums; Grain is safely stored in barns before the winter comes. And a young lad gathers conkers And challenges his chums. Time to kiss the summer goodbye.

The branches have lost Their tenacious grip upon the leaves, As, silently, they flutter to the ground. And every bush with flaming hues of red and gold abound: Time to kiss the summer goodbye.

A ghostly mist comes creeping with the dawn; The pearls of dew lay longer on the lawn. And increasingly earlier, evening's cloak is drawn. Time to kiss the summer goodbye.

The beach and park are empty now, The children once more return to school. Desolation settles on the faded deckchairs, The deserted ice-cream stall. Time to kiss the summer goodbye.

The season's drawing to an end Like the turning of a page. We cannot detain her, no matter how we try. Autumn's waiting in the wings to take centre stage. Time to kiss the summer goodbye.

Page 15 of 48 GOLDHANGER PARISH COUNCIL Report on the Ordinary Meeting held on 12.9.2017 Planning It was noted that Council has refused the following application: 27 Maldon Road – Two storey side/rear extension to replace existing similar two storey extension. Single storey lobby extension to replace existing lobby structure. Councillors were dismayed at this result. The following new application was supported: The Stumble 4A Church Street Goldhanger – erect two storey rear extension to detached dwelling to provide enlarged dining room/kitchen and fourth bedroom with en-suite facilities. Councillors noted with concern Maldon District Council’s new initiative to allow more planning applications to be dealt with by officers rather than by referring to the North West planning committee where Parish had the opposite opinion. Maura Benham Close - The Parish Council is continuing to pursue the replacement and management of the hedge at the road boundaries of the site. Highways Councillors were very concerned to hear that Highways considers the damaged village gateway sign (Maldon end) is not in need of repair, despite hanging on one leg only and being in danger of falling off and perhaps hitting a passing vehicle. The issue has also been reported to Councillor Mark Durham (Essex County Council member for Maldon) and his comments are awaited. A Community Park Watch officer patrolled the village over the recent Bank Holiday but did not issue any parking tickets as everyone was parked correctly. Further patrols will take place in the future. Footpath diversion - the public footpath which runs through Joyces Farm and Lauriston Farm. The Council has sent in its response to the above and will now wait for the formal consultation to take place. Playing field – Two benches in the playing field/play area are to be replaced, and quotes will be obtained for this work. Village Hall A sub-committee of the Council considered a request from the Village Hall Management Committee for a donation towards the Village Hall improvement scheme, and reported its findings to the full Council. The Parish Council is mindful to make a grant as part of the precept, and invites residents to express their views either by contacting the Council or coming to its October meeting when a decision will be formally made.

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Tuesday 17th October 2017. Please note that this is a week later than the usual date. All are welcome to attend, and the agenda will be published on the Council’s website and on the notice board in the Square.

Paper Boat Race (See centre pages for photos) We have had two major social events since our last news, firstly the paper boat race which was held on August 20th. What an amazing turnout in the sunshine. Boats of all shapes and sizes took to the creek to the delight of the huge watching crowd. Our winner, Charlie Willis, had made his craft from an Alpen cereal box. I have to say Charlie, it didn't appear to have had the love and attention spent on it that some of the other boats had. The only youngster’s boat to make it all the way across the creek was Finty Willis. Congratulations to them both. All competitors received a certificate to mark their participation. Charlie was presented with the winner’s cup and a bottle of wine and Finty with a model boat ornament. We finished the afternoon with a barbecue, tea and cakes. The profits of £60 will be sent to the Essex Air Ambulance. Thank you to everyone who supported this event and enabled us to make our contribution. We hope to see more of you next year.

Picnic & Prosecco Evening Our second event was a Picnic and Prosecco evening. The food was plentiful, as is usual at our events. We all braved a chilly, dry evening to eat our picnics on blankets, but retired to the club to continue our evening with wine and good company in the cosy warmth of the clubhouse.

Saltmarsh 75 Ultra Marathon Our next event to look out for will be the Saltmarsh 75 over the 7th - 8th October. This event is a two day Ultra Marathon, where competitors tackle 75 miles of some of ’s most unique coastline, the Saltmarsh Coast of the Maldon District. Starting at South Woodham Ferrers, competitors will follow the banks of the river Crouch until it meets the North Sea, before turning North through the remote marshes. The competitors stay overnight at Steeple and continue the run on Sunday 8th October. They stop at Goldhanger Sailing Club as a checkpoint from 10am onwards on the way to the finish at Salcott. You can cheer them on and have tea and cake at the club. Why not come and watch mad people who think a good weekend is running 75 miles along the seawall to raise money for charity. They are inspiring and would be grateful of your support. For more details of the club and our events, contact Jenny 01621 788145 or Kay 01621 892612.

Page 20 of 48 ‘AL FRESCO’ BELLRINGING FOR VILLAGE BBQ

(See centre pages for photos) In order to show what happens when the bells are being rung by the bellringers every Wednesday and Sunday, Caron arranged that we could borrow a mini bellringing tower to provide demonstrations for the village BBQ. (Kindly loaned to us by the tower ringers at All Saints Church, Hollesley, Suffolk). It was like a team building exercise following the instructions to erect it for a trial run in the village hall! Several of the ringing band on hand to complete the build. Then, we needed to learn how to ring on such small bells - which was a challenge! Much less effort and a slightly different technique was needed to ring them. On the day of the BBQ, the whole mini tower rig was dismantled and rebuilt in the village hall field, taking pride of place in the centre of things. Many of the ringers were on hand to put on a couple of basic demonstrations to show what happens when the bells in the church tower are rung. Being able to see the bells as well as hear them is great for explaining what change bell ringing is. In between demonstrations, anyone was welcome to have a go at learning to ring the bells to see for themselves it isn’t as easy as it looks! Also, the opportunity for people to meet some of the ringers and see what an eclectic bunch we are. It was wonderful to see so many people having a go, both children and adults. There was also the chance for people to have a go at ringing hand bells, which was a real hit with some of the younger members of the village. Throughout the day, several renditions of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’, and ‘Old MacDonald Had a Farm’ were rung on the hand bells. Overall, it was a great moment to join in with all the other clubs and societies within the village on the BBQ day, welcoming new members to see what goes on in Goldhanger. Sarah

Page 21 of 48 Goldhanger Classic Car Club – Gala Weekend.

(See centre pages for photos)

Our yearly static car show , which is an integral part of the village Gala weekend proved to be a success again this year! Yet again the weather held off for us, prompting members from near & far to bring their prized cars to show. I know we had visitors from both Dymchurch & Ipswich, that came to join in the fun and see the cars on display - and with over 45 cars they weren't disappointed. Keith (The Car Carer) Flynn very kindly produced & donated 4 trophies for us this year. One of which was the special Andrew Christy cup - an award given to the most original car still in everyday / frequent use - in memory of long time Car Club member Andrew. Andrew’s wife Jackie, and son Eddie, presented the award to winning recipient Keith Wilkins (above) in his 1960 TR3A. The other main award for best in show went to a visiting Trabant (1986) car belonging to Mick Elsey that was in astounding condition. Runners up were Mike & Patricia Batt in their 1936 Austin Heavy taxi, and Les & Ros Peeks in their 1955 Oldsmobile. It’s all done for fun, and to put smiles on the faces of the winners. We also succeeded in topping up our charity pot for the club’s donations at the end of the year. Thank you to all those who came along - both exhibitors & spectators. We are also grateful to Lizzie Lawrence for allowing us to park on her front drive & to The Chequers for allowing us to use their car park.

Electrical supply companies are now advertising and encouraging us to have a “free” Smart Meter installed. So is it a good idea? Here is what Smart Energy GB say on their website: The European Union asked all member governments to look at smart meters as part of measures to upgrade our energy supply and tackle climate change. They’ll give you more control over your energy use, help you understand your bills and allow you to see what the energy you use is costing you. Smart meters have two unique features: They show exactly how much energy you’re using and what it’s costing, in near-real time and they send accurate meter readings to your energy supplier, so no more estimated bills or manual meter readings... It is possible for other wireless devices operating on the same frequency, like some home routers, to interfere with the signal from your smart meter to your in-home display. This is what the Citizens Advice Bureaux say on their website: A smart meter won’t automatically save you money - you’ll have to be proactive to reduce your energy costs. Some suppliers are not ready to install smart meters that comply with government standards (known as ‘SMETS-compliant’), but are offering similar products. If you end up getting one of these you might not get the functionality or services a smart meter has, and you’ll probably have to upgrade to a smart meter later on. You don’t have to accept a smart meter if you don’t want one. In the short term, smart meters could be a barrier to switching suppliers. Energy companies are currently installing first generation smart meters. These are called SMETS1 meters. If your supplier tells you that you must have one installed, contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.

Here is what the Daily Telegraph said on 2nd Aug 2017: Six reasons to say no to a smart meter: 1) Smart meters could make it harder to switch gas and electricity providers. 2) Smart meters don't bring an end to estimated bills or billing errors. 3) Smart meters won't work if you have a poor mobile phone signal. 4) The display units are crude and difficult to understand. 5) There's little evidence so far that smart meters will save energy, or money. 6) Smart meters could be infected with a virus cutting supplies off.

Here is what The Guardian said on 24th & 26th Jun 2017: Is your smart meter spying on you? The French are getting heated up about their meters collecting data on their daily lives. Perhaps the British should be concerned too. Smart meters are presented as an environmental and power-saving initiative, but it’s highly surveillant. It can

Page 32 of 48 tell how many showers you have had, when you are cooking, when you are in and out of the home. A telemarketing company will know if it’s a good moment to call. Energy companies report rising cost of installations due to ‘customer apathy’ which could prompt suppliers to increase tariffs. Householders typically need to take a day off to be at home over a four-hour period for an engineer to swap in the smart gas and electricity meters. ------In fact all a smart meter does is tell you how much the energy is costing you per minute, per hour or per day. The main benefit is to the suppliers, who don’t have to employ meter readers anymore and can collect more data about your use. If you want to know how much electricity each appliance is using then that information is already available on many websites, this one works well: www.switchwise.co.uk/uk-energy/uk-utilities-info/electricity-cost-calculator

Here are some examples based on EONs cost of 15.74p per Kwh, in order of heaviest use of energy: The figures are approximate and for our devices. If your electricity is 10% cheaper, take 10% off these figures. When the electricity price next goes up, just add that percentage on. What can I do for You? It's what good doctors, plumbers, (politicians? hmmm…) should be saying to all of us. I hope I say it often. I hope the church says it all the time. We are all in service industries. William Temple said "The Church is the only organisation that does not exist for itself, but for those who live outside of it." I think I should have that printed on the front cover of my diary - Just after - "Don't Panic". So what can the church in Goldhanger, Great Totham and Little Totham do for you? Well I'm going to start with three of the more obvious things, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms and that's just for starters.!!! So the question for October is, “Why get married in church" Today there are many elegant, up market and let's face it expensive ways of getting married without using your local church. I used to be slightly apologetic about the churches' fees for weddings until I found out how much other venues charged. So once again why marry in church? Well yes I know the church door is very pretty and makes an excellent background for the photographs, we're proud of it, but we can do so much more for you. We'll talk with you and help you build up a good workman like understanding of what it might mean to be married. When two very different people come together to commit themselves to each other in marriage, even if they have been living together for some time, there will be things about themselves that are essential elements of their character, that make them who they are and other areas in which the big "C" word will be necessary. (Compromise in case you haven't guessed). Have you ever listened to those TV programmes where couple are helped to buy the house of their dreams. They have a long wish list!!! Will they compromise on anything? No? Well it's a very bad way to buy a house and it's an awful way to start a marriage. We don't have pre-packed answers for you but we're good at asking questions and helping you ask questions of yourselves. Next year we hope to have a Wedding Preparation Day where we can meet, talk, share ideas, meet some couples who are still talking to each other after many years of marriage and all this with lunch thrown in. (The date will be advertised in the parish magazine and we hope you will join us even if you're at the "considering marriage" stage.) Not many venues will take that amount of trouble in helping you to prepare for your wedding. What else can we do? Well we offer an after sales service. We'll always be there for you. If things are not going as well as you're hoped, if you want a

Page 34 of 48 listening ear, we're there. If it's something where our expertise is limited and we can't help personally, then we can help you find the woman/man who can. And then there are the other ups and downs of the rest of your life. Children, how do I help them grow up to have a life that really means something - what do I say to my child when granny dies. Employment and financial stresses and strains - how do we cope with them. Elderly parents, coming to terms with the death of someone you care about, these are all difficult personal issues but they also but pressure upon a marriage. Once again we don't have pre-packed answers but we're good at listening and if we can't help personally, then we can help you find the man/woman who can. There must be a catch! Surely the church won't be interested in me, "I'm not baptised", "I don't go to church" "WRONG" If you want to take your wedding seriously so do we, seriously and joyfully. The church will welcome you with open arms. Give me a ring, my telephone number is in all the Parish magazines/newsletters (01621891513) Sue Godsmark

Makes 6

INGREDIENTS 6 Cox apples 6 small wooden ice lolly sticks 225g granulated sugar 110ml water 30g butter 2 tbsp golden syrup 4 tbsp finely chopped mixed nuts

DIRECTIONS Push the wooden sticks halfway into the apples at the stalk end. Dissolve the sugar and water in a thick-bottomed pan over a gentle heat. Add the butter and syrup to the mixture and bring to the boil. Continue to boil, without stirring, until the toffee reaches 140C/275F (use a sugar thermometer to measure this). Remove the pan from the heat and gently stir in the nuts. Carefully dip each apple into the toffee, making sure each apple is well coated, and set aside to harden on a baking try lined with non-stick parchment.

You can also cover your toffee apples with desiccated coconut or chocolate sprinkles.
