Quiz Night Preston Community Hall, Friday 3rd July, 7:30pm Teams of four - £2.50 each person Prizes for the Winners - and a booby prize! In aid of the Preston Chapel Survival Fund

Whilst the Quiz Night is in the Community Hall on Main Street, the Chapel is located at the busy crossroads in Preston village. Despite being at the crossroads, it is only really accessible from one pavement to the west of the church. To cross to that pavement from other directions is quite an ordeal for most people, but is particularly so for some elderly members of the congregation.

A local church supporter said “One lady, over the age of 90 and previously a lifelong attendee at church services, has recently given up attending because of the difficulties in crossing the road in her wheelchair. As the congregation gets older, the inaccessibility of the chapel is becoming more of an issue!” The aim is to use the funds raised from the Quiz Night and other fundraising activities to help tackle the problem.

PROSTATE Cancer UK received a cheque of £2,000 from Councillor John Dennis in his last public role as the 668th Mayor of Hedon at the end of May. The charity was Councillor Dennis’ main good cause supported during his year in office. He picked Prostate Cancer UK as recipient of his charity fundraising efforts because of what he termed his own ‘brush with the condition’ a few short years ago. He had gone to see his doctor for a ‘health check’ with the aim of measuring his cholesterol – the results of his test diagnosed early stage prostate cancer which completely shocked him, but the diagnosis had come early enough to allow treatment to be effective. See page 7 for news about the new 669th Mayor of Hedon’s chosen charity for his civic year. July 2015 www.hu12.net 3

FOURTEEN year old Harry Robinson from Leaf Sail Farm in Hedon has won his first round of the season of the amateur AquaX jetski national championships. Harry is the youngest racer in the rookie class of the competition and raced in Scarborough on the last weekend in May. In the final of three races, competing against over 20 other riders, he claimed the top spot after what commentators said was a “thrilling ride”. Dad, Steve Robinson, is already a top class AquaX rider coming third in last year’s national championships and is ranked the seventh best rider in the world, but this year due to a broken foot he is unable to compete so is spending his time coaching and supporting Harry. Steve said: “Harry is doing fantastic – first round and he won! Last season Harry finished overall 5th and would have done much better, but he missed one round because Harry Robinson - ‘Rookie’ with Dad Steve last year of his age, he was too young to compete.” There are another four races in the championship which includes the Hull leg in August. The powerboat and jet ski races on the River over the weekend of Saturday 8th August and Sunday 9th August 2015, also coincides with Hull’s Grand Prix of the Sea. Hull Marina and viewing points along the Humber are usually packed out for this weekend with people wanting to catch the best views of the excitement. We are sure that people in Hedon and the rest of Holderness will want to follow Harry’s progress during the competition. And we also wish Steve Robinson all the best on his road to recovery and return to competition next year. Find out more information about the Races and the Riders at the P1 AquaX website. The Hedon Blog has declared itself to be a Dementia Friend. We hope that through the blog in a series of articles we can help raise awareness of the condition, encourage more people to become Dementia Friends and encourage local action so that Hedon can justifiably call itself a dementia friendly place that aims to include people with dementia and contribute towards their quality of life. Another aim is to encourage people to seek early diagnosis of dementia.

Around 850,000 people in the UK have diagnosed dementia and perhaps 5,000 of those live in the East Riding – and there may be many more living with symptoms but are yet undiagnosed. It is likely that most people reading this will know of someone with dementia.

There are five things that people should know about dementia:

1. It’s not a natural part of ageing 2. It’s caused by diseases of the brain. The most common of these is Alzheimer’s 3. It’s not just about losing your memory – it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks Visit: www.dementiafriends.org.uk 4. It is possible to live well with dementia 5. There’s more to a person than the dementia

There are some information resources available locally. Hedon Library boasts a collection of books on dementia. It also hosts a digital reminiscence therapy unit – this state of the art technology lets people with dementia and their carers create a digital life story book which is a personal reminiscence tool that can include photos and music. Someone in the early stages of dementia can put together their life story into a digital book; the ability to revisit this later as the dementia progresses, can be a stimulating and satisfying experience.

Warren Branton has been using the digital reminiscence therapy unit at Hedon Library with his wife Irene who has dementia. He said: “The digital memory book has been a real source of comfort for Irene, especially being able to add in familiar music which she loves. It’s user friendly and has been an enjoyable experience for us both.”

If your workplace or organisation deals with the public, then it might be beneficial to hold your own Dementia Information session for staff. Emma Williams from the Alzheimer’s Society may be able to help with this – contact her on 01482 211255.

Lots of information available at the Dementia Friends Website, but in many ways being dementia friendly is just an extension of good neighbourliness. We encourage people in Hedon and the surrounding district to become Dementia Friends too! Help make the places you live and work dementia friendly!

Mike Rouse, said: “With great disappointment we learned that the Village Show was not going ahead this year. It’s a shame to lose this community day. so we are putting together a smaller version. After an inspection by Hedon Mayor Councillor Neil Black and officers, there will be a parade through the town, followed by a church service at St Augustine’s Church. Time: 2pm – 4pm. Free entry and car parking.

PLANS to renovate the Ryehill Village Hall on Marsh Lane, Ryehill, HU12 9NG were agreed in October 2012 and a committee formed to carry out the necessary fundraising to make the restoration happen. Since then the dedicated volunteers have managed to raise over £31,000. The committee has organised bingo nights, garden parties, craft fairs and fun days as part of their fundraising activities. Last Christmas the hall hosted a marvellous theatre production. The Summer Fete, a fundraising cricket funday on 13th September, a Harvest Auction in October are some activities this year. The project once completed will see new extensions and a new roof being built, and a new brick skin built around the entire building. This will improve the facilities available for the local community and preserve the life of the building itself. A new idea is to build an extension pod to the current building containing new facilities. The committee is keen to recruit new volunteers to help with the fundraising drive. SOUTH HOLDERNESS CRICKET CLUB MATCH PREVIEW JULY. By Malc Ripley

The fixtures scheduled for this coming month will see yet another season past the half way mark in the York & District Senior League, with the Hedon based teams both having put up much improved performances generally in comparison to those a year ago, (writes Malc Ripley). Of the nine matches featured below, the Club's first eleven's two home games against CC and versus Kirk Ella CC at Middle Lane, could give rise to a couple of the hardest fought encounters in the hosts promotion chase in division Four East, particularly looking at the challenges set by these two Clubs in the first half of the summer. Earlier in the campaign, all rounder Lewis Duell cracked a superb 157 against Town CC II, only to fall two runs shy of his Dad Steve's 159 made fifteen years ago, but the late Tony Wilcockson's record of an undrafted 160 way back in 1966, against Stamford Bridge CC in the defunct Cricket Pennant Alliance remains the Club record, even though Dave Gatti's fine effort of 155 also put the record in danger too. The younger Duell has already passed the 400 run marker so far, whilst left handed skipper Rich Ingram is knocking on the door with 300 plus. Another of the former Pennant Alliance teams in Brandesburton CC act as hosts to the senior squad at their Rial Recreation ground when it is anticipated that old rivalries will be renewed. There is only a single 'local derby' in the coming month, when village side Patrington CC seconds make the trip to Hedon, but the latter have found life difficult in the higher division this summer, especially as they replaced their promoted first eleven, who went into division Two East where they joined neighbours Hornsea Town CC. Equally, the An Xl are looking to be in the mix at the end of the summer as promotion candidates into the first division of the Eastern Conference, but they too face strong competition, this time from the likes of Pelican CC, former East Yorkshire Cup Competition side Old Hymerians CC and also from Foxtons CC. Eyes will certainly be focused on the fixture against Foxtons, at Hedon, when the result of what is expected to be a battle royal, could play an all important role to determine one of the promotion places available. The second string are without a fixture on 4th July, before they face what is always a difficult affair a week later, when they travel to tackle Skidby CC, who are always a handful to overcome particularly at home. All rounder Carl Bevan is a player that the visitors will have to watch out for, despite an uncharacteristic lean spell with the bat recently. For Holderness, former Humbleton bowler Ian Harrison, who threw in his lot with his near neighbours three years ago, has 15 wickets to his credit to date.
