Cronulla’s beautiful stretch of coastline is a congregation point for thousands of swimmers, surfers, walkers, sporting teams, events and café and restaurant patrons. Our beaches are a regionally significant recreation and tourist area for Sydney so ongoing maintenance of the dunes and tracks is important to provide better access to the beach, protection of the dunes and dune vegetation, as well as assisting in preventing erosion.

Before and after work on the Croft’s property greenweb grants After successfully applying for a Greenweb grant, Shire resident Dave Croft was able to employ a local bush regenerator to assist in regenerating and revegetating his yard which adjoins a Council reserve. The grant went towards preserving the unique local vegetation and provide habitat for local fauna. The yard, once overgrown with weeds and rubble, was bought back to life with native plants including Acacia Suaveolens, Christmas Bush, Lomandra multiflora and Gymea Lily. This made the yard a lot more attractive to the local fauna, and since its completion the Crofts have welcomed a range of new visitors to their yard; swamp wallabies, echidnas and many birds and they look forward to many more native species finding a home. If you are interested in joining Council’s Greenweb program contact Council’s Greenweb Officer on 9710 0463. You may be eligible to apply for a Greenweb grant. To check if your property is part of the Greenweb network visit Council’s website and click the Greenweb link under the Environment tab. Applications for 2013 grants are open until 30 September.

STRENGTHENING GREEN CREDENTIALS Council has recently created the ‘Green Team’, a voluntary group of staff empowered to find ways to reduce waste and improve energy and water efficiency across the organisation. The ‘Green Team’ includes managers, transport engineers, environmental scientists, strategic and assessment planners, cleaners, child care staff, cooks from Council’s child care centres, Sutherland Entertainment Centre staff, Bushcare officers, Land Information staff and Council event organisers. The ideas generated are as diverse as the participants. The Green Team has already introduced composting and worm farming at Council’s child care centres and is working on a training module to be presented to new staff about sustainability and what’s expected of them as Council employees.

THREE MATURE GUM TREES POISONED Three mature gum trees, including a rough-barked apple (Angophora Floribunda) and a southern mahogany (Eucalyptus botryoides), located adjacent to Cronulla Sailing Club at Gunnamatta Park have been poisoned. Anyone with information is asked to come forward and contact Council. The increasing amount of tree vandalism in the Shire is a driving force behind Council’s Tree Vandalism Policy that was introduced last year. The policy sets out various responses to the tree vandalism depending on the severity of incident. If you have information about poisoned trees, report it to council via the Report It app, on Council’s website or by calling 9710 0333.
