Leroi Moore: a Biography
LEROI MOORE: A BIOGRAPHY by Bobby Daryl Fuson II A DOCTORAL DOCUMENT Presented to the Faculty of The Graduate College at the University of Nebraska In Partial Fulfillment of Requirements For the Degree of Doctor of Musical Arts Major: Music Under the Supervision of Professor Paul Haar Lincoln, Nebraska May, 2016 LEROI MOORE: A BIOGRAPHY Bobby Fuson II, D.M.A. University of Nebraska, 2016 Advisor: Paul Haar Few artists thrive at the crossroads of musicality, originality, and popularity. Musicians and critics often laud the first two and neglect the latter. Any imbalance in ratios between them that tips toward popularity is balanced by diminishing the creative elements. Saxophonist LeRoi Moore (1961-2008) of the Dave Matthews Band was one artist who balanced all three. While his musical output was prodigious very little is known about him. He was a reclusive figure onstage and in public, shunning interviews and at times literally the spotlight, despite being a founding member of one of the most commercially successful bands of the last two decades. Musically Moore was firmly planted in the jazz tradition for which his instrument has become known. A gifted improviser and arranger, the quality of his musical contributions was consistently high and pure. Moore’s music was creative, original, and popular in equal measure. A biography of his life and analysis of his works are essential to recognizing his place in the history of American music. The album, produced by John Alagia, producer of Yamagata’s Happenstance album as well as albums from Liz Phair, Dave Matthews Band and Jasaon Mraz, will be self-released on her very own Frankenfish Records. Twelve days following the release of Chesapeake, Yamagata will hit the road on an extensive tour of the United States starting on October 24th in Portland, Maine at the Port City Music Hall and wind down on December 22nd in New York City at City Winery (Dates Below). For Chesapeake, Yamagata recruited her “dream team” consisting of Victor Indrizzo (Sheryl Crow) on drums, guitarists Mike Viola (Candy Butchers), Michael Chaves (John Mayer), and Kevin Salem, (Dump Truck, Yo La Tengo), cellist Oli Kraus (Sia, Duffy) and Tom Freund on the upright bass. The result is an eclectic collection of songs projecting Yamagata’s newfound optimism and hopefulness, showcasing her sultry and smoky voice, rich, layered harmonies, striking ballads and soulful grooves. “The songs on Chesapeake were collectively inspired by the people in the room,” said Yamagata. “I insisted on a creative scenario that became only about the music makers themselves, giving it a spirit of generosity in the music making which made it easy to tap into a ‘flow’. -
