One of the main objectives of the evaluation taking place at the Academy of Sciences is an effort for an objective mapping of the scientifi c quality of our institutes, namely all the way to the level of individual units. The assessment process will be capped by specifi c conceptual steps within which carefully planned measures of a fi nancial and organisational character will result, so that we will be able to even more quickly and effi ciently utilise research results in practice both on the national and international scale. In the modern period, it is ever more evident that science, research and education are among the fundamental factors of the economic prosperity of society, which also signifi cantly participate in the formation of its cultural and spiritual values. The leadership of the Academy of Sciences will therefore take thorough care to ensure that the balanced relation Dear Readers, between the necessity to maintain a suffi ciently wide base of scientifi c fi elds and the need to reinforce the You have before you the Annual Report of the Academy priority directions of research will be preserved also of Sciences of the Czech Republic, in which you will in the future. Jiří Drahoš President of the Academy of Sciences The Year 2010 was exception for the Academy of Sciences in that all of its institutes underwent a demanding evaluative process, which should contribute to the further improvement of their research activities. I have to emphasise that the Academy of Sciences is the only institution in the Czech Republic that systematically conducts such an assessment, namely with signifi cant participation of foreign reviewers. The evaluation of the activities of the institutes of the Academy of Sciences has from the very beginning followed several objectives at the same time, by which it fundamentally differs from the simple mechanism of 7 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE ASCR 2010 01 Introduction 8 INTRODUCTION As compared to previous years, the scientifi c-research, tivities but all of our science and research and gradual cre- educational and cultural activity of the Academy of Sci- ation of the conditions which would allow the Czech Re- ences of the Czech Republic (hereinafter referred to as public to assume a place among the advanced countries the ‘ASCR’) took place in 2010 in impaired external, par- of Europe and the entire world in the area.
