You can argue forever about who is the best at a particular task. Whether Joe Montana or John Elway or Tom Brady was the best recent-era quarterback, or whether Barry Sanders or Walter Payton was the best running back, or whether Joe Greene or Reggie White was the best defensive lineman of the modern age. But you can't argue who was the best owner of the NFL's modern era. Randy Cross, in a segment of NFL Network's "A Football Life" (which debuts Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET), put it this way: "He belongs in the Hall of Fame right next to the other owners who have won five Super Bowl championships." (Wry smile, pause) "That COUNTDOWN TO TIP-OFF would be none." Defining DeBartolo's career by championships, however, would be an injustice, kind of like saying, well, Joe DiMaggio had a nice streak that one year in 1941. But there is at least one member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who did just that. He quit at the absolute peak of his career and he did make more money "on the outside" -- 33 percent more, to be exact. That is the incredible story of Cliff Battles, one of the most brilliant running backs pro football has known. After only six years in the National Football League, 28 years old and in perfect condition and a member of a championship team, Battles quit the Washington Redskins when owner George Preston Marshall refused to raise his salary above $3,000. So Battles became an assistant coach at Columbia University, where he was paid $4,000. In his brief time in the pros, Battles made an indelible impression. He gained 3,622 yards rushing in six years and, up to 1938, no one had ever approached that career total. He had led the league in rushing twice and had been a member of the official all-league team three times, including his last two seasons. In 1937, the Redskins' first year in Washington, Battles had teamed with rookie Sammy Baugh to give the Redskins not only a league title, but one of the most explosive running-passing threats in history. This rare combination should have meant misery for other NFL teams for years to come.

    PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn PHILADELPHIA EAGLES Team History The Eagles have been a Philadelphia institution since their beginning in 1933 when a syndicate headed by the late Bert Bell and Lud Wray purchased the former Frankford Yellowjackets franchise for $2,500. In 1941, a unique swap took place between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh that saw the clubs trade home cities with Alexis Thompson becoming the Eagles owner. In 1943, the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh franchises combined for one season due to the manpower shortage created by World War II. The team was called both Phil-Pitt and the Steagles. Greasy Neale of the Eagles and Walt Kiesling of the Steelers were co-coaches and the team finished 5-4-1. Counting the 1943 season, Neale coached the Eagles for 10 seasons and he led them to their first significant successes in the NFL. Paced by such future Pro Football Hall of Fame members as running back Steve Van Buren, center-linebacker Alex Wojciechowicz, end Pete Pihos and beginning in 1949, center-linebacker Chuck Bednarik, the Eagles dominated the league for six seasons. They finished second in the NFL Eastern division in 1944, 1945 and 1946, won the division title in 1947 and then scored successive shutout victories in the 1948 and 1949 championship games. A rash of injuries ended Philadelphia’s era of domination and, by 1958, the Eagles had fallen to last place in their division. That year, however, saw the start of a rebuilding program by a new coach, Buck Shaw, and the addition of quarterback Norm Van Brocklin in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams.

By the time I had celebrated Cookie Gilcrest’s yardage gains, cheered Joe Ferguson’s arm, marveled over a kid called Juice, adapted to Jim Kelly’s K-Gun offense, got shocked by Thurman Thomas’ receptions, felt the thrill of victory with Kemp and Golden Wheels Dubenion, and suffered the agony of defeat through four straight Super Bowls, I was a diehard Bills fan. Unbeaten Miami crushed Notre Dame with a coach we ran out of town for not winning enough. People in Georgia were reported to be among the fattest in the U.S. And we got our asses kicked up and down the field by Auburn. A lot of the narrative heading into the game concerned Jake Fromm’s performance in a hostile environment. That narrative focused on the crowd: How will the callow freshman, with his 9-0 record (counting the opener when he didn’t start but played most of the game), respond to 87,000 hostile fans on enemy turf? But the storyline should have been concerned with Auburn’s defensive line, which destroyed our run game and put Fromm on the run whenever he tried to pass. The way they blew up our trick play, the handoff-lateral-back-to-QB play that worked like a charm earlier this year, summed up the afternoon: A wide open receiver ran free while Auburn’s defense ran even freer in our backfield and blew up the lateral before Fromm could even get set, much less spot Hardman downfield amidst the waves of blue jerseys he was engulfed within. Auburn dominated both lines of scrimmage. You can point to dumb penalties, slippery footballs for receivers and punt returners, clock management, the reading of press clippings, a sensational game by Kerryon Johnson, a brilliant catch by almost-a-Dawg Darius Slayton, tremendous scheming by the Auburn staff, and a hundred other reasons we got hammered.

Enclosed you will find television ratings, advertising intelligence, as well as online and mobile information to provide an almanac of US sports fan consumption in 2009. There is no true beginning or end to the sports year and many sports’ seasons straddle both ends of the calendar.
