This year U.S. Figure Skating will host a regional camp in Chicago in conjunction with the DuPage Open competition on August 19th and 20th. Skaters from the preliminary through novice levels are invited to participate at the Twin Rinks of Buffalo Grove. The purpose of the camp is to promote athletic testing for the skaters and have past and present World and Olympic medalists or competitors and coaches give informative presentations to the skaters, parents and coaches. Members of the Sports Science & Medicine staff will provide valuable feedback to those attending. Officials from U.S. Figure Skating will additionally address the International Judging System. U.S. Figure Skating has a strong testing structure in place to measure the accomplishment of technical and component skating skills. Additionally, there needs to be a system that measures athleticism. By creating a better athlete in the beginning, and not trying to play catch up with the skaters’ athletic abilities, U.S. Figure Skating will produce skaters with higher technical achievements and fewer injuries. A series of measurable exercises will be taught to promote better flexibility, strength, power, anaerobic conditioning, balance and agility/coordination. These exercises will be taught to the athletes and measurements will be taken to get data for future testing parameters and standards. The information will be delivered in both informative and interactive means to accommodate the age and levels of the athletes. The camp will also have an informational component for the parents. The parents’ sessions will address key issues that many parents have questions about pertaining to their child’s participation in figure skating. In addition there will be a coaches’ track designed to educate the coaches on developing athleticism in their skaters, sports science, the International Judging System and more. A discount will be given to all athletes that participate in the competition. Further details of the camp and fees will be posted on U.S. Figure Skating’s website in May. 2 2007 DuPage Open Competition Tentative List of Judges and Officials World Judges: Lucy Brennan, Charles Foster, Robert Horen, Dr. Franklin Nelson, Coco Shean, Gale Tanger International: Joyce Komperda National: Carolyn Clausius, Scott Cormier, Kathaleen Kelly Cutone, Elaine DeMore, Dr. Jessica Gaynor, Lori Johnson, Marie Pearce, Jan Serafine, Shirley Sherman, Karen Wolanchuk, Ben Wright Officials Chief Referee: Jan Serafine Assistant Referees: Charles Foster, Woody Weier, Ben Wright Chief Accountant: Rich Jonesi Assistant Accountants: Martha Cogan, Tom Tanger Music & Announcers: Richard Babino, Jim Mirabile, Michael Wasz, Mansie O’Leary Technical Technical Specialists: Libby Scanlan, David Santee, William Schneider Technical Controllers: Jan Serafine, Dr. Jessica Gaynor Technical Accountant: John Marasco Judges Ramsey Badre, Janice Benoit, George Bohnert, Cathy Bushman, Martha Cogan, Monica Decker Barbara Goodrich, Ruth Gregori, Fred Hagedorn, Heidie Jevey, Denis Jirout, Norbert Katarksi, Ketty Rogal, Rose Mary Santee, Dr. Betty Schilke, Dr. Arthur Schneider, Eileen Serafine, Margy Solon, Carol Weier, Woody Weier, Cherie Weil, Lydia Wolanchuk, Janet Wright, Cheryl Wyskup Map & Directions to Rink (1500 Abbott Court; Buffalo Grove, IL 60089): Driving Instructions: From O’hare area via I-294: North on I- 294 to Lake Cook Road exit. The skill is mastered fairly quickly and as the child grows, it often becomes a valuable skill in many of the sports they participate in. Gymnastics, track and field, and figure skating are a few of the sports where jumping is not only a valuable skill, but also a required one. The United States Figure Skating Association states that three of the required elements in the ladies short program must be jump elements, and allows a maximum of seven jumps in the ladies long program (USFSA, 2013). The quantity of jumps equals more than half of the elements in both the ladies short and long programs. As jumping is such an important factor in the sport, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the skater’s performance Figure 2: The Single Toe-Loop [Martinez, C.] of jump elements.
