Church of St. Patrick 400 Main Street Huntington, 11743 (631)-385-3311 www.stpathuntington.org FROM OUR PASTOR, MSGR. STEVEN R. CAMP

Dear Parishioners,

Today the Church recalls the Lord’s entrance into the City of Jerusalem, to accomplish his Paschal Mystery. We now enter Holy Week. As I mentioned last week everyone should try to attend something during this sacred time. I invite you to participate in the many different liturgies that we will celebrate. Not everyone can make all of them, but each of us can be present for some of them. This Sunday, we will celebrate Tenebrae at 7:30pm, after our Palm Sunday masses. On Monday, most importantly, every parish in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens and NYC will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please avail yourself to this wonderful opportunity to receive the Lord’s compassion, love and forgiveness. We will also celebrate Morning Prayer and other services on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Good Friday night, at 8:00pm, we will experience “The Journey, Cross-and Crucifixion”, a live performance of the Stations of the Cross from Creative Ministries. This event has turned into one of the more long-running and highly popular events in our parish, as it places us at the feet of Jesus while He suffers on the road to the cross.

Branches of palm, olive, or sometimes even budding willow are ancient symbols of victory and hope, as well as of new life. The procession celebrating Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem overflowed with praise and excitement, as onlookers waved these triumphant branches and proclaimed their blessings. Yet, in a few days, they will cry “Crucify him!” The crowd’s change of heart illustrates the problem of holding God to our expectations. The crowd expected a liberating leader, the Messiah, to free them from Roman oppression. Jesus instead takes up his Cross and invites us to do the same. Through his Death and Resurrection he is indeed a liberator, but from death and sin, not from Rome. But unable to see past their need, the crowd’s disappointment turns into anger and a death order. As we enter Holy Week, Palm Sunday teaches us to let God be God and to trust in God’s wisdom not only to meet but shatter and exceed our expectations.

I want to thank Fr. Michael Sullivan, OSA for leading us in our Lenten Parish mission. As Lent comes to a close, it was a wonderful faith filled few days to prepare us for Holy Week. I will keep you all in my prayers this Holy Week.

God bless and have a good week. Msgr. Steven Camp

2 Church of Saint Patrick Huntington, New York HOLY WEEK TENEBRAE: A Service of Psalms and Shadows An overview, compiled by Matthew Koraus, Director of Music

Our parish will once again offer a service of Tenebrae, this Sunday, April 14th at 7:30pm in the church, sung by the professional vocal quartet VOX AQUARUM. This service is a powerful way to begin Holy Week, recounting in Scripture and in song the betrayal, death, and burial of Jesus Christ.

Origins and Current Use… The service of Tenebrae during Holy Week is a deep-rooted tradition of the Church that has its origins in the Liturgy of the Hours, the daily prayer of monastic life. Matins, the first hour or “office” of the day, often began in darkness, sometimes as early as 2AM. Lauds, the second “office” of the day, would not be held observed until daybreak. Since the 12th century, for each day of the Triduum, Matins and Lauds came to be combined into three unique Tenebrae services. Tenebrae is the Latin word for “darkness,” “shadows,” and “obscurity.” The title of the service is both a reference to a passage of Scripture contained within it (“Tenebrae factae sunt” - “darkness came over the whole land” (Mark 15:33), as well as to the time the office was observed. Often, to encourage the attendance of the laity, monastic communities transferred their Tenebrae services to the eve prior to the day observed, so that Holy Thursday’s Tenebrae would be held on Wednesday evening, Good Friday’s on Thursday evening, and Holy Saturday’s on Friday evening. The title of Tenebrae also refers to the form of the service, whereby after each psalm the lights in the church are progressively extinguished. As we contemplate in the darkness the events of Jesus’ last days, we confront own fears of betrayal, abandonment, judgement, and death. By the end of the service, a loud noise is made, recalling the earthquake which followed the death of Christ, as well as signifying the closing of the tomb door. Only one candle remains lit, the Christ candle, a hint of the Resurrection. The darkness of the Tenebrae service is not fully dispelled until the conclusion of Holy Week, at the Easter Vigil. Since changes to the Roman Breviary in 1961 and 1970, the anticipation of Matins and Lauds on the previous evening has been prohibited, and the three Tenebrae services have been re-formed as Morning Prayer for Holy Week, currently observed in many parishes, including our own. Increasingly, many Catholic parishes have adapted the title and form of the old Tenebrae services into a single-night devotion, prior to Holy Thursday, as is the case for our service on April 14th. The Music… The music of the service, as in the tradition of the older rubrics concerning Lent and Holy Week, will be sung entirely “a cappella,” that is, without instrumental accompaniment. The selections reflect the great variety and depth of the treasury of sacred music, with medieval chant presented alongside newly-composed psalm tones, as well as music of the great polyphonic masters. The polyphony will be rendered by a vocal quartet, one voice per part, as it was most likely to have been heard originally. The most famous composition associated with this service, Gregorio Allegri’s setting of Psalm 51, “Miserere Mei, Deus” (“Have mercy on me, O God”), was closely guarded by the Vatican, which originally forbade transcription and dissemination of the piece, intended for use only in the Sistine Chapel. In 1770, a young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart attended Wednesday evening Tenebrae at the Sistine Chapel, heard Allegri’s “Miserere” and subsequently wrote the piece out from memory, returning to the Chapel that Friday to make minor corrections. Pope Clement XIV was so impressed by this feat of musical genius that he met with Mozart personally and awarded him the Chivalric Order of the Golden Spur on July 4, 1770. It is by Mozart’s ear that we have the piece today, and it has become one of the most performed and recorded works of the late Renaissance. Most importantly, the music, through its text and mode of composition, expresses in vivid detail the intense sufferings of Christ during His Passion. May we, through this service of Tenebrae, unite ourselves more fully to His sufferings, so that we may rejoice on Easter Sunday with an even fuller appreciation of His great sacrifice.
