Hamilton was born in Rutland in 1960, and now lives near Rutland Water. He began writing in 1987, and made his first professional short story sale to FEAR magazine in 1988. In the short biographical piece which appeared with the story he mentioned that he was working on a novel - on seeing this Kathy Gale, then editor at Pan Books, contacted him and asked to see the book. MINDSTAR RISING, his first novel, was published by Pan in 1993. It was followed by A QUANTUM MURDER in 1994 and THE NANO FLOWER this year. All three novels feature the psi-boosted private detective Greg Mandel and are available from Pan at £4.99 each. In addition to his professional sales of short stories to INTERZONE, IN DREAMS and NEW WORLDS, Hamilton's work has appeared in a number of small press magazines since the late eighties. Heralded as the most exciting "sf technician" currently writing in Britain, Hamilton's fourth novel, THE REALITY DYSFUNCTION, marking a change of pace to "Space Opera", will be published in hardcover by Macmillan in January 1996. /Copies o f CRITICAL WAVE #30, which featured Peter F. As such it is concerned with a historic problem ir pci tial :hearv, i.e., how to visualize a perfect human community. Since the turn of the 20th century, we have seen a decline in utopian ~i tera.ture. A variety of commentators, including Mannhein: and Mumford, noted and decried this trend. It seemed ironic to those observers that utopia~s demise would occur when humanity was closest to realizing material abundance for all. My research evaluates this irony. The primary data of my work are drawn from the genre of science fiction. The new locus for utopian thought seems natural enough. Science fiction is a speculative activity and, in its emphasis on science and technology, concerns itself with an area of human activity that has been intimately connected with the idea of progress since the European Enlightenment. A number of scholars including Mumford, Sargent, Suvin, and Williams, have asserted that contemporary utopian thought could be found in science fiction.

Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate.

    My Back Pages #5 Rich Lynch My Back Pages #5 a few more of my articles and essays Well, the Dog Days of August have arrived again. The midsummer heat and high humidity here in the D.C. area once again have made the outdoors an unpleasant experience. A few weeks of this weather is almost enough to make me look forward to winter snows again. But not quite. Anyway, the coming of August means that the annual World Science Fiction Convention is not far in the future. It’s invariably a fascinating event and is always something to be looked forward to. My wife Nicki and I have been to twenty-six Worldcons, in cities as close to home as Baltimore and as far away as Glasgow and Melbourne. This year’s Worldcon is in a place that neither it nor we have been before – Reno. Nowadays Reno is a gamblers’ paradise, but back in the late 1850s the area just south of Reno was the site of a gold and silver rush of immense and historic proportions. So we’re looking forward to not only the convention, but also to seeing some of the history surrounding that part of the “Wild West”. The previous time a Worldcon came anywhere close to this section of the United States was back in August 2008 when, as you will read, Denvention was only one of many conventions (and not nearly the largest) that visited Denver that month. Luís Silveiro Dissertação orientada por Doutora Teresa Cid MESTRADO EM ESTUDOS INGLESES E AMERICANOS (Estudos Norte-Americanos: Cinema e Literatura) 2010 Abstract The current work seeks to contrast the book version of Alan Moore and David Lloyd‟s V for Vendetta (1981-1988) with its cinematic counterpart produced by the Wachowski brothers and directed by James McTeigue (2005). This dissertation looks at these two forms of the same enunciation and attempts to analise them both as cultural artifacts that belong to a specific time and place and as pseudo-political manifestos which extemporize to form a plethora of alternative actions and reactions. Whilst the former was written/drawn during the Thatcher years, the film adaptation has claimed the work as a herald for an alternative viewpoint thus pitting the original intent of the book with the sociological events of post 9/11 United States. Taking the original text as a basis for contrast, I have relied also on Professor James Keller‟s work V for Vendetta as Cultural Pastiche with which to enunciate what I consider to be lacunae in the film interpretation and to understand the reasons for the alterations undertaken from the book to the screen version. An attempt has also been made to correlate Alan Moore‟s original influences into the medium of a film made with a completely different political and cultural agenda.

Rider Haggard, Jules Verne and Arthur Conan Doyle I took the long build-up to a fantastic element, made all the more amazing because the characters are immersed in the ‘real world’ for so much of the story. From the comics medium I dipped my pen into the European tradition of Hergé, Edgar P. Jacobs, Yves Chaland and the descendents of their ligne claire legacy, along with the strong sense of environment – a believable world – from Asterix and Tintin. Yet I wanted characters and a setting that were very strongly British, without being patriotic. Mixed into all this is my fondness for an involving and compelling plot, and artistic influences absorbed from a wealth of comic artists and illustrators, from Kay Neilsen to Bryan Talbot, and a simple love of history and adventure. No zombies, no bikini-clad gun-toting nubiles, and no teeth-gritting ... grittiness. Just a huge slice of pure adventure, made to go with a big mug of tea.
