Furtak Professor and Head Department of Physics ii ABSTRACT Neutron activation of materials followed by gamma spectroscopy using high-purity ger- manium detectors is an e↵ective method for making measurements of nuclear beta decay half-lives and for detecting trace amounts of elements present in materials. This research explores applications of neutron activation analysis (NAA) in two parts. Part 1. High Precision Methods for Measuring Decay Half-Lives, Chapters 1 through 8 Part one develops research methods and data analysis techniques for making high pre- cision measurements of nuclear beta decay half-lives. The change in the electron capture half-life of 51Cr in pure chromium versus chromium mixed in a gold lattice structure is ex- plored, and the 97Ru electron capture decay half-life are compared for ruthenium in a pure crystal versus ruthenium in a rutile oxide state, RuO2.Inaddition,thebeta-minusdecay half-life of 71mZn is measured and compared with new high precision findings. Density Func- tional Theory is used to explain the measured magnitude of changes in electron capture half-life from changes in the surrounding lattice electron configuration. Part 2. Debris Collection Nuclear Diagnostic at the National Ignition Facility, Chapters 9 through 11 Part two explores the design and development of a solid debris collector for use as a diagnostic tool at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). -

ABSTRACT Neutron total, and elastic- and inelastic-scattering croes sections of natural titanium «ere measured. Total cross sections were determined over the interval 0.1 to 1.5 MeV with resolutions of & 1.5 keV. Differen tial elastic and inelastic neutron scattering angular distributions were measured from 0 .3 to 1.5 MeV with resolutions of £ 5 keV. The cross sec tions for the inelastic neutron excitation of states in ^6Ti (889.2 keV), **®Т1 (983.5 keV) and **7Т1 (159.6 keV) were determined. The energy-averaged behavior of the measured results was described in terms of optical- and statistical-models. A. Introduction It was the objective of this work to; a) provide a detailed and internally consistent set of experimental fast neutron cross sections of titanim specifically meeting requests for basic data"*" and providing a foundation for thorough evaluation, and b) test the validity of nuclear description of a number of facets of the neutron-nucleus interaction. The isotopes of titanium lie near the 3S peak of the i ■ 0 strength 2 function distribution. The measured strength functions in this region 3 have been well described by selected optical-potentials but the descrip tion of measured partial neutron cross sections at higher incident energies is uncertain due, in part, to a lack of detailed experimental information. -

Some of these emissions occur through continental aquatic ecosystems, locations of fate and accumulation of organic and inorganic matter. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the origin of organic matter in Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, an eutrophic, coastal and chocked lagoon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, through the determination of n-alkanes and sterols compounds in the upper two centimeters of sediment and compare these data with methane ebullitive flux. The concentrations of n-alkanes varied between 2.43 and 25.82 µg g-1. C29 was predominant compound in most sites, but also with important petrogenic source evidenced by the occurrence of Unresolved Complex Misture. The total concentration of sterols ranged from 2.76 to 56.01 µg g-1. β-sitostanol was the most abundant compound and coprostanol was the most relevant at the sites under -2 -1 -2 -1 influence of domestic effluents. 4CH ebullitive flux averaged 199 mg m d in the dry period and 9.3 mg m d during the wet season. -

Silvera1 1Lyman Laboratory of Physics, Harvard University, Cambridge MA 02138, USA. 2TFVS, Universiteit Antwerpen, Groenenborgerlaan 171, 2020 Antwerpen, Belgium We study two techniques to create electrons in a liquid helium environment. One is thermionic emission of tungsten filaments in a low temperature cell in the vapor phase with a superfluid helium film covering all surfaces; the other is operating a glowing filament immersed in bulk liquid helium. We present both the steady state and rapid sweep I-V curves and the electron current yield. These curves, having a negative dynamic resistance region, differ remarkably from those of a vacuum tube filament. A novel low temperature vapor-phase electron collector for which the insulating helium film on the collector surface can be removed is used to measure emission current. We also discuss our achievement of producing multi-electron bubbles (MEBs) in liquid helium by a new method. 2 I. INTRODUCTION The study of free electrons on or in liquid helium started over four decades ago and continues to be an important area of research; many of the fundamental studies are discussed in refs. [1, 2]. There is continued interest [3, 4] in the fascinating properties of electrons on or under the surface. Electrons on the surface of liquid helium form a 2D electron gas and at high enough density can solidify into a lattice, demonstrating Wigner crystallization [5]. There is a 1 eV barrier for electrons to penetrate the surface of liquid helium [6, 7]. -

Vol. 27, No. 1, pp. 41-47 (1978) Conversion of Cholesterol to Coprostanol and Cholestanol in the Estuary Sediment Shin-ichi Teshima* and Akio Kanazawa* Abstract This paper deals with the conversion of cholesterol-4-14C to radioactive coprosta nol, cholestanol, and cholestenone in the estuary sediment from Kagoshima Bay, Kagoshima, Japan. The incubation of cholesterol-4-14C with the sediment and sea water gave radio active coprostanol, cholestanol, and cholestenone. The identification of these radio active compounds was performed by thin-layer chromatography and preparative gas- liquid chromatography followed by radioactive measurements. However, the incu bation of cholesterol-4-14C with sterilized sediment and with sea water (or sterilized sea water) produced extremely small amounts of the above mentioned conversion products. These results indicated that the conversion of cholesterol to coprostanol, cholestanol, and cholestenone is effected by the action of microorganisms in the sediment. Several workers have attempted to use coprostanol (5^-cholestane-3y?-ol) as an indicator of fecal pollution in water1"7*. Since the feces of human and mam mals are regarded as the only source of coprostanol in natural environments, the occurrence of coprostanol has been conceived to be indicative of water pol lution in the cause of human life. As to the marine environments, the authors have pointed out the presence of coprostanol in both sea water and the sediments in Ariake Sea, indicating that the concentration of coprostanol was markedly high in the sediments as com pared with that of sea water7). -
